Quite simply its an event where the vast majority barely care about racing. That detracts from the atmosphere for me and that is an important consideration
Its also largely populated by office parties getting childishly drunk. this was well illustrated recently by the cheering on of the horses as they went down to the start.

cheltenham certainly has a more knowledgeable crowd and newmarket even more so…

Its alos a horrible grandstand and the paddock is inaccesible. Same could be said about cheltenham though….

Dont get me wrong, i have enjoyed days there, but its not my favorite event

and the racing itself is superb…

Cheltenham beats all the others hands down for atmosphere, but its becoming alittle too uncomfortable for me

Rotyal Ascot is great racing but a dismal event at a rubbish racecourse. The whole place is populated by east end maggots in top hats and tattoos. Its truely vile…but the racing still drags me back each year…i admit

I love Goodwood, but my vote would perhaps be Newmarket July. a delightful meeting at a lovely hot time of year with a decent crowd…

    No..

    Im talking rubbish…nothing beats Cheltenham

Henrietta has sated that Bm is more of an "elegant" horse rather than a sturdy one. Frankly, although we would like to see handicaps tackled, Gold Cups will do, wont they?

Suede. he is not just a spring horse around cheltenham….a couple of Grade one wins at Xmas proves that

Ricky…thankfully im not old enough to remember bloody arkle. if i was i would be wearing chums trousers and would soon be losing all my memory anyway.

More seriously, you missed my point. Its the continued looking back at another era which grates. If arkle why not golden Miller? James Lawtons article was frankly boring….zzzzzzzzz

there was an article by James Lawson (an irishophile or whatever the equivalent is) in the independent yesterday on best mate that manged to name Arkle more times than Best Mate

Now say theres an article on thierry henry that mentions Stanley matthews more times…

    Exactly

the arkle business is a deeply boring. great horse …yes

    But in black and white

i am completely bored with hearing about Himself

It happened in black and white, too long ago now…

what do u feel about those that ramble on about Nat Lofthouse or Denis compton? exactly…

If we are to bang on endlessly about arkle, why not golden miller?

No doubt he was great etc, but with improved training regimes and general science, it may well be that he couldnt have beated todays best today. Much the same as the way that Arsenal would destroy man utd circa 67 simply becuase the speed and strength would be too much to cope with

time moves on and these dicussions should be left to the coffin dodgers

For what its worth, my view is that if it pays its way, then so what?

Like the dogs it will be ignored by me being against my main principle of concentrating on quality (and the card at WH was shocking…), but if the smelly bloke (theres always one) in the bookies wants to punt on it, thn fair enough.

On this forum there is a wlecome and natural bias towards true racing fans and purists of probably some intelligence (TDK apart), but we shouldnt forget that a lot of punters are quite frankly lazy or just fun punters. Bless em

I would pay for the RP website (but dont tell them). the form links are fabuolous

Agree ollie with all your post. Not sure i agree with all the maxims and some are alittle too obscure or low grade for me to test, but its still suprising that so called expert pundits still lean against the Derby, 7f and inexperienced jumpers ones (which I do strongly agree with)

ATR is a blessing…warts and all..and after the horrible recent rantings of the c4 team (well Francome anyway)and the awful carson on BBC , its a welcome alternative

The spotlight summaries are poor too

Recently someone was writing about "gooduns" and "behind the cracks" (which got me wondering)

    Whats all that about?

I prefer to amke up my own mind of course and maybe im old fashioned, but this sounded like muttered rubbish from a betting shop pond life specimen

good to see so many votes for dessie…sometimes knocked abit by "experts" who resentedhis public image

    So, yes…

    1. desert Orchid. real star quality and one i saw many times around the sw london courses

    2. dayjur. Dont normally like sprinters and not keen on this ones connections…but what a sprinter! wow

    3. Reference Point. Epitomised Cauthen and cecil at their best

    But there are so many…

    Can i vte again tomorrow?

the results stand for themselves and he was certainly extraordinary.

But…doesnt stop me being alittle bopred with hearing his named dropped endslessly by poeple who were barely born when he was running (not saying that is the case with you of course…i am sure you are old)

Rather like me going on about Stanley Matthews or Fred Trueman. They were greats…but i cannot realistically relate

No im not trying to say that Best Mate is another Arkle

But hes, at the very least, starting to prove that he is the best since Desert Orchid at least

And his record speaks for itself.

And I do hope that there will be a horse that is as good as Arkle one day. Chances are it will happen….

Thats the fun of the game (and will be nice to stop hearing about a horse form nigh on 40 years ago too…)

    Rory

the unifors those punters were wearing were black balaclavas and…

    sorry

    Morgan
Agreed. Like Ian I couldnt care less where my favorite horses come from. There are trainers ii dont particularly like (Pipe for various reasons and one or two of the posh Newmarket boys who only ever underachieve) and that is where the only prejudices of mine come from.

It has sometimes seemed in the past that a slight doubting of Dawn run was taken as an attack on the whole Irish Nation, without understanding that the comments are based on technicalities rather than flags

But I still think that the best test of a staying chaser is kempton not cheltenham. thats not a Dawn run attack as much as a justification of WL. The fact is though that the gold cup has presented us with some daft winners over the years. Not always, but often enough. The layout and general conditions at Kempton make for a more telling contest, in the same way that you would generally prefer Newbury form to Goodwood

I also the belive that best Mate is right up there now and Desert Orchid is (more so than Dawn Run) strangely maligned by some.
In truth Morgan, U brought the nation issue up…not me.

I think it is true that the Irish have been prone to overhype a few horses and get a bit romantic and sentimental about some achievements, but thats fine…its all part of the game

I take what you say, but perhaps Ive listened to too many uniformed irish (and english of course) punters in pubs who think racing is the same as supporting football teams. cheltenham can get a bit like that and Irish raiders are often poor value in the market because of the enthusiasm behind them

We all ahve our biases of course. for my part I will bend towards trainers that i like and that includes Weld and Oxx. Aiden is a nice fellow too…but the connections…hmmmm

The real sadness is that Dawn Run didnt get a chance to complete her career, but i still feel taht Wayward lad was the finest chaser at that time in the same way that i am a believer taht the King george throws yup the best horse more often than the Gold Cup, which can be freakish

Thats another topic….maybe illstart that thread now
