Punchestown got back to me after I complained. They apologise unreservedly and say the screens were put up to screen the grandstand view. It was a previously unused camera angle and they didn’t realise until too late what would happen and they’re horrified. They’ve asked ATR to remove the footage but so far they haven’t so will ask again.

I’ve contacted ATR twice and they haven’t got back to me.

I’ve just watched it. I’m astounded that was allowed to happen. I can’t understand how there’s not been complaints.

Is this right that this poor horse was put down in full view of the cameras? Surely not? How can that happen?

Poor horse was only 4 and it was his first run. Too, too sad.

Thanks for that Luddite, it’s very much appreciated. I don’t do Twitter, Facebook etc so never know these things. It is nice to know Dickie was acknowledged.

Too sad – 5 years old, ran three times, pulled up twice then in his third race brought down fatally. Poor horse.

Dickie has just been ‘deleted’ from the trainers website, but there’s nothing anywhere on it to say what happened. This seems so very cold and uncaring, so I’m hoping they just haven’t finished updating yet.

I heard Midnight Choice haemorrhaged. James Evans is another trainer who seems to really care about his horses.

Thanks for that. The RP doesn’t give any info (although I didn’t expect any) and I can’t find an email address for the trainer. He was walked a fair way by the jockey but then didn’t seem to want to move when they tried to walk him towards the ambulance.

I don’t do Facebook or Twitter so would never have known that, so thanks for that. It makes me feel a bit better if he was loved.

Update – even with my technical ignorance I managed to have a look at the Facebook tribute – many thanks.

A teaser is a stallion literally used to ‘tease’ the mare and get her ready to accept the stallion she’s going to be bred with. Usually with some kind of partition between them. So Mine will have been used to get the mare ready (and himself!) but not actually be allowed to breed with her himself.

Really not nice that such a good, honest, genuine horse was used in this way. From what people are saying it doesn’t sound like he was much considered at the stud and I so hope some-one can tell me otherwise. I would love to know that some-one in his daily life cared about him.

That’s just too tragic for words. It’s horrible at Catterick today. You’ve got to wonder what was going through the poor horse’s mind – her first go in really awful conditions then to die like that. Too sad.

Apparently James Bethel has a mare called Miss Apricot who’s in foal to him. He didn’t get much patronage and I find it terribly sad that he was used as a teaser. I don’t think he deserved that, he was so game and tough they could have given him more of a chance – they don’t know how good his foal/foals will be yet. It can’t have been very nice for him. It’s thought he had a heart attack.

    Poquelin is in today’s RP.

Apparently Poquelin had a heart attack when not doing anything really strenuous and Woolcombe Folly had colic and couldn’t be saved.

This has really saddened me. How did a horse like Poquelin even end up in this situation? I know I’m probably showing my ignorance, but wasn’t he a Stewart horse, with Nicholls? He’s only 11. I really don’t mean to be rude, truly, but I know nothing about the person who is now listed as his trainer.

There’s nothing so far on Nicholls website about Woolcombe Folly.

Does anyone know more about this?

Thunderball was a lovely horse – there’s an absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful tribute on the trainers website.
