Secretariate He was the best I have seen in my life time which spans 60 years of race watching. To run each furlong in a faster time than the previous one is an unheard of feat, which is what he did in winning the Belmont by a distance. Because he was the greatest he has to be my choice.

Very sad indeed. Deepest sympathy to his family and fiancee in this time of sorrow. We are reminded by this tragedy "a horseman’s grave is always open"

Some of the language on this thread is worse than on a tennis court.

When you add the riding tactics of different jockeys to the equation it becomes another problem.

Thedarkknight, Margaret Wheatley wrote a very good book on chaos theory, however it was not a mathematical one so it might not fit this subject.

My fav.derby for all the wrong reasons was Secreto beating El Gran Senior. Vincent was so certain that he invited the one after whom his horse was called(Senior Louren I believe his name was) to come over from the U.S. for the race. The commentator said to watch money being minted as El Gran Senior moved gracefully to the front.Pat Eddery was so confident that he forgot to win the race.David O’Brien Vincent’s son trained the winner ,Secreto, in a photo finish and effectively shut down the O’Brien- Sangster operation They needed another Derby winner to cover expences. Mrs O’Brien with her husband and son met the Queen and did not know whether to laugh or cry. David gave up the training the following year because of the pressure. What a story!

I listened to Hawk Wing and watched Funny Cide and thought what two extraordinary performances on the same day. FC also won by about 10 lengths in a classic! The significance of his performance has not sunk in yet. And for a change he is owned by a bunch of ordinary guys. Finally he is gelded so hopefully we will see him next year and after.

Even with all the money available it is impossible to buy the derby winner every year.( I mean before the race) But I would not write off Brian Boru just yet!

It has to be Vincent. How many Grand nationals? How many Gold Cups? How many Champion hurdles? How many Derbys? And in his old age a Breeders Cup! Yes it has to be Vincent. On top of that his brothers were gentlemen!.

A well known Irish rider was once heard to say " To win by a neck is good to lose by a neck when you must is an art form"!

Is it true that the Aga Khan mares are a good cross with the Coolmore stallions?

    AIDAN
I have to disagree with you on one point. Most 2yo should not be trained to settle at the gate. Many trackes even in ireland do not have straight 5to7 furlong courses, This means a bend will be coming up soon. If you cannot get out of the gate smartly you will be caught when the bend arrives. This is clear in Galway, Ballinrobe, Wexford, Gowran and many other courses. Most races up to a mile with a bend are the same. I know Chester is an extreme case but it is a good example of what I am talking about

Rory, Was that the day where he got off and walked his horse to the shade under a tree on a very hot day while the starter was disqualifying a French horse for not declaring some gear or other? I must be getting old! Maybe that was another day when he used someone’s pacemaker.

Brian. Thanks for refreshing the memory of one of the greatest rides I ever saw. I recall now the stumble.

    Johnjdonoghue.
I guess Lester was just a very lucky guy. Maybe one should hire lucky guys instead of whiners. Look at Lester’s race and say coming around horses was not an option. Cash that day used what you called the only optionand ended up nowhere. Mike neither went around horses nor up the rail; he chose the only real "not an option" and payed for it.
