Creskeld!!!
Given a right pull at the gate, well backed 2nd fav scoots up??
I’m outta here. Bye all.
November 26, 2002 at 15:27 #101720Oh my god!!!!!!
Do you know what? He put two and two together, and lo and behold – He got four.
Dammit you’re quick Racing Daily
November 26, 2002 at 16:18 #101722Dont go Racing Daily like reading ur threads gather u had a big bet on it? Dont worry ull be back betting again well i hope so.
November 26, 2002 at 16:24 #101724RD , I saw the race but didn`t have a bet as I hate the all-weather , so can view the race impartially .
It was in a hopeless position very early , as you suggest , kept on the rails throughout and was absolutely covered in muck from the continuous kickback .
It made up a lot of ground , possibly as much as 10 lengths in the closing stages to finish 5th just out of the place money beaten 2 or 3 lenths by Shore Vision .
Whilst not being Chris Catlins` finest hour , I would suggest to you that there are twenty better examples of dodgy goings on on a weekly basis than this example , minimum .
You didn`t ever have a chance of collecting , which is obviously disappointing but I feel you may have gone overboard considering the horse got a 6 lb penalty for winning a fairly dreadful race last time out .
Just my opinion .
It was a disappointing run and had it run its race as expected it should have got in but you just knew it was going to lose this morning when it was tipped everywhere. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say never mind roll on tomorrow. There will always be scams you just have to try and stay one step ahead of the bookies.
I lost on Creskeld today and advised others to bet on it also so an eggy faced day for me but who knows what will happen tomorrow. We all get down sometimes but the trick is to not stay down.

I’d recommend that you don’t get involved in gambling if you:
a: can’t read a race properly.
b: can’t handle losing
You apparently fail on both counts. I’d have laid Creskeld today – simply on the basis of his draw and his style of running. That’s how professional layers prefer to make their money – making logical decisions about the likelihood of horses winning and taking the money of people who can’t look beyond short priced favourites in competitive handicaps.
Creskeld won last time out when held up at Southwell, a feat which is much easier at that track when gifted a wide draw. This fact is constantly overlooked by the idiots who believe that the fastest route in a race is always the one closest to the inside rail.
His work was cut out from stall 7 as that meant he either had to bounce out to get a prominent position, or try to make ground from off the pace on the inside of the track on slower ground and with kickback in his face.
In the end that became academic when (rather than the jockey taking a pull as you incorrectly suggest) Creskeld flyjumped leaving the stalls, unbalancing himself and leaving his rider no choice but to opt for plan B, which Chris Catlin tried extremely hard to make work.
Jockey and horse performed with credit – this was a case of punter error!
November 26, 2002 at 18:48 #101730Racing Daily started this thread and whilst I have no real comment on that particular race, it would astound some of you exactly how good some jockeys are at losing when looking unlucky – it really is an art form!
On another note, I watched Catlin at Wolves the other day and he consistently put his horses up the inside rail, when all the winners came down the centre of the track.
What are peopples views on him?
November 26, 2002 at 18:55 #101733I rarely punt or lay on the all weather and certainly didn’t on the Creskeld race……however,i did watch the race and for me the horse simply missed the kick after rearing in the start box………in all fairness the jockey tried everything he could to redeem the situation.
Punters taking such prices on muppet races like that need to see a psychiatrist…..its nothing short of insane.

November 26, 2002 at 19:07 #101734A well known Irish rider was once heard to say " To win by a neck is good to lose by a neck when you must is an art form"!
November 26, 2002 at 20:29 #101735
I’d absolutely echo what Rory has posted. I laid Creskeld this morning at 7/4 and was amazed that punters were willing to back him at the show prices.
He’s a moderate handicapper with a 2/22 career record before today’s race. He needs a strong pace, which he got last week and wasn’t sure to get today and Rory’s point about the draw is well made. Note also that today’s winner Shore Vision was lumbered with stall 1 last time.
Any punter that backs a 5/4 fav in a 16 runner 0-70 handicap is beyond saving.
And any punter that shouts fix whenever he backs a loser is similarly lost.
I also laid two winners this afternoon at Warwick – Cresswell Quay and Wild Dream. My conclusion is that I made two mistakes and need to try harder tomorrow.
I will raise again the eternal question – one to which I have never in thirty years heard a decent answer – if you’re convinced it’s all bent , why do you bet on it?

November 26, 2002 at 21:30 #101736That was definitely a weak selection, poor value in an open race, etc………..
But I wouldn’t be angry, just learn from the experience and don’t bet favourites on the AW if you don’t like losing.
rory and apracing are giving some valuable advise here!
November 26, 2002 at 22:12 #101737Apracing, don’t go telling everyone the trade secrets  . We need punters for the 5/4 shots in low grade handicaps to provide easy pickings.
There are non tries in virtually every race, every day and part of the challenge in this game is to try and second guess the tacticts. Assessing races from a sound basis of form and stats and then reading the market and the trainers previous ploys pays huge dividends. Trainers are creatures of habit and often their plans for landing a touch can be clearly sussed.
I have a connection with one of the most successful jumps yards and track the performances of all runners. After a few years it is easy to build a picture of how the trainer places and prepares certain type of horse. The best novice hurdlers are always started off at gaff tracks and often finish the season with a number of wins and steady improvement of up 20 to 30 pounds.

November 26, 2002 at 22:29 #101738In my opinion I could see no reason why Creskeld couldn’t win this race, for me the draw was ok, trainer said he’d thought he’d improved the horse – I think I have improved him (Creskeld) and he is very well in himself. He has improved in his home-work and could easily win today but the handicapper will determine whether he wins more after today really .
Creskeld did however run a very strange race in finishing I think it was 5th, I fancied him to win this race BUT wouldn’t take short odds about him doing so, therefor my bet was on Pheckless e/w who ran well enough without winning, it’s all good being clever after the event but the layers in my opinion were probably lucky more than anything! …. thats racing!
I’m not into all this jockey’s taking a pull and all that stuff – it bores me so much now, strange things go on in racing and there’s nothing we can do about it!
Also – there is NOTHING wrong with AW racing and I’m sure you’ll all agree it has got better over the years, especially at Lingfield where more and more top trainers are running their horses!
November 26, 2002 at 22:48 #101739Must agree with Tony, it was a crap race, and if you come on complaining that you lost on it, well I can’t feel sorry for you. It was avery poor meeting in Southwell today, reminded me of evening racing in Leopardstown in June!!!!!
November 27, 2002 at 07:46 #101740Southwell is the worst of the 3 AW tracks and is best to be avoided!!!!!!
If your going to bet on the AW do it at Lingfield and Wolverhampton.
November 27, 2002 at 11:03 #101741I am very optimistic for the future :) , i have been gambling for over forty years and NEVER won on a GOOD (this will win ) tip, ever.
I was given Creskeld too and thought this could be THE day,…… who am i kiddin’
Cheers, johnj, that gave me a chuckle – couldnt agree more. It never ceases to amaze me the difference in the class of racing at Leopardstown between NH and flat. I realise it’s getting off the topic of this thread but why is Leopardstown as a flat racing venue so relatively poorly-supported by the racing authorities and the trainers in the class of races and horses and by the public in attendance? Is it from the trainers point-of-view that the course is relatively tight? The venue is absolutely top-class in terms of facilities, vantage points etc
