Aidan
It’s neat that you gave yourself permission to critiize the ride a horse got even if it was from an American. Now do you think you could bring the same critical judgement to bear on the ride of some other jockeys? Your silence on Saturdays riding is interesting. I will agree with your observation on Best of the Best; I did not see that race, but value your judgement. I thought Landseer got the beat ride of the Ballydoyle horses.Cigar needed more than just getting out of the gate. Also the Godolfin horses were not up to scratch this year in the Cup I wondered if 911 influenced them to go to Australia instead.I know there is some feelings emerging about Saudi just now in the States. Who was the jockey incidentally you fererred to? I know Willie Shoemaker was brilliant in his only ride in the Derby.and Steve was great on his first classic ride. Kinane rode a brilliant race on GO and Go at Belmont Lester did the same on Royal Academy and Eddery on Prince Albahdu But that was then this is now.
Spook
All excuses. The european horses with American jockeys all managed to break smartly. So it was not the handlers!
Robgomm
I would even suggest that they i.e. the american jockeys, are better outside their own environment. Have you seen Gary Stevens on the Englist tracks (or Steve Cauthen) or Jerry Bailey at Dubie? They were brilliant.
Ian, I wa thinking as much of the end of the race as the beginning.I remerber a few years watching Lester getting left at the gate on Royal Academy. He didn’t come home with that excuse. He still won! Landseer was drawn outside the Rock didn’t miss the break and got in a position to win. Prado had a real excuse for not winning! What was Mike doing BEHIND Landseer anyway ???? Sure beats me.
Of course it’s bent. Otherwise all handicaps would have multiple dead heats. Bookies would not attend and all punters would back the same horse; trainers would keep most of their horses at home and Dermot Weld’s second string would not always finish last first time out and win next time while the Jockey Club stewards turned their heads the other way..
The punters may have a "need to know" but they don’t have a "right to know" what the trainer tells an owner about his property, ie, will he stay, will he win etc.(most owners need to have a punt to cover expenses)
Collin
A lesson to be learned. The people who pay the piper call the tune. The two dollar punter will never be privy to the inside information. But in passing was it possible for Jamie to fake that look of disgust? Did Aidan know that he only had to beat Hawkey that nothing would come to get RGon tne line. That Jamie could judge it so perfectly to be beaten so close? That Rangers would get a goal in the 92 minute to win .Sorry for a minute I got carried away and thought I was talking anout God not a mortal who does his best and sometimes things don’t work out.
Gearoid ,
The point of the race is to establish which is the best horse.
You cannot say which is best before a race. The most a good jockey can do is to not deminish the ability of the best horse to win.Jamie Spencer on HW is an example of the jockey not allowing the best horse to win.If you can eliminate the ability of the jockey to screw it up the best horse will win.
robgomm
I read somewhere that the trainer of Ruffian used to say to his jockey as he was mounting "she will win if you don’t screw it up". The best horse will win if nobody screws it up. And even then they sometimes win.
Robgomm,
What you say makes sense in regards to betting.. However if there is a real front runner in the race the pacemakers should not be allowed since the only reason for one in that case is to burn off the speed horse not to set a pace. However it must be admitted that pacemakers separate the horses who stay the distance from those who don’t.
I think that Coolmore uses real jockeys on contenders and work riders on pacemakers. And I think that is the weakness of Coolmore’s use of pacemakers. They might have won even when milan broke down if they had a proper jockey on the pacemaker. Let’s be honest if these ‘lads" were real jockeys other yards would be using them when they are available.
Dear meshaheer surely forcing one horse to go wide and allowing another up on your inside is contributing more than just pace to the race? You make it sound like an act of God that he was just there. I believe that Gal lost by a lot less than what he gave up by going wide.
Dear Escorial
I see where Georgia Peach and Backcraft are both entered at Haydock on Saturday. We will see how the Peach does!
Good observation on Georgia Peach Escorial. How did the Peach jump? For that is probably the reason he ran since this was his first run over hurdles I believe. The winner had a race over hurdles in Ireland. I think they were about equal on the flat with D.Weld Both should win again this season.
