Zanir won a 16 runner handicap hurdle at Auteil this afternoon, picking up a first prize of almost twenty grand.
A welcome boost for Paddy Brennan and Tom George and just shows what can be done, although it’s also an indication that you need a fairly high quality of horse to be able to win over there.

April 6, 2011 at 18:29 #348911You also need a horse suited by bottomless ground but if you have one a trip to France should certainly be included in your plans.
For those with horses suited by fast ground there’s always a trip to the West coast of Ireland to contest a handicap hurdle worth £133,000 to the winner to consider
April 6, 2011 at 19:29 #348925Good stuff from Tom George and Paddy Brennan, great race placement.
Most French races are framed based on prize money won and races won within a time period (say a year) so on that basis if you have a horse that is suitable for French races you’d be stupid not to at least have a go, even if it’s not at Auteuil or Enghien even the prize money in the provinces and smaller tracks is good – for example the ex-Nicholls mare Pepite De Soleil going back to France and taking 10,500 for winning a Dieppe fillies and mares hurdle on her first start back.

April 25, 2011 at 15:01 #352100Zanir returned to Auteil this afternoon for a Grade 2 hurdle over almost 2m 4f, offering total prize money of 175,000 Euros.
He finished a close third and rewarded connections with another 22,750 Euros for their initiative.
Second was the top older French hurdler Questarabad, who beat Jumbo Rio in this same race last year. So it will be interesting to see if the Uk handicapper takes any notice of this form, which on paper at least, looks about a stone better than anything Zanir has done in the UK.

April 26, 2011 at 19:02 #352293Hot on the heels of Zanirs success earlier this month, there has been another British winner in France in the last hour. The Nick Williams trained Maljimar has won a 20,000 Euro cross country steeplechase at Compiegne tonight. In addition to this, both Williams and Lucy Wadham have entries at Enghien next week.

I’ve heard the Grand Steeplechase de Paris mentioned for the horse. It’s the biggest chase in France, worth about 850,000 Euros. I know that it has been mentioned as a target for Kauto Star in the past as well, It’s run over 5800 metres (3m 5f) on the last Sunday in May.
