Does anyone remember the Benfield Group? It had about 50 shops in the London area and eventually sold out to the Nanny Goat. I left school at 16 in ’77 and went to work in Benfield’s head office – actually a two-storey terraced house opposite one of the shops in West Ealing! My main job was to assist the pipe-smoking Fred, who’d worked for Benfield’s for years, in answering the bank of phone lines over which the shops would relay bets taken whose potential liabilities head office might want to lay off. Met some right characters but was too young to appreciate it.
