I had heard that everything on youtube or file-sharing websites was breaching copyright – that’s why i use mininova
June 26, 2008 at 23:27 #170283Racing UK coverage is produced by the same production company as Channel 4 racing – Highflyer.

Any use would be breaching copyright, it’s just the bigger companies that cop for it first – hence Youtube.
Be careful though as it is sometimes easier to go after the smaller company for a breach as it will scare people off – eg Oink.
June 27, 2008 at 08:05 #170294It has always baffled me as to why these companies would object to footage being posted on a site like you-tube, even if they did hold the copyright. Its not like a poor quality 3" x 3" picture of a horse running around a field can be bootlegged and sold on to fund terrorism, is it.
It just seems like some sort of pathetic corporate power trip.

Difference is though mate that Mininova (best internet site since the RP ) doesn’t host the content – the users do with Mininova simply storing the torrent paths.
Of course there is bound to come a time when they are indicted for something else but until then …

June 27, 2008 at 08:57 #170300Yes, i mean it’s hardly going to stop people from signing up to Racing UK. It’s not going to cost them anything as i doubt people sign up to it just to see replays of Kauto Star races. Ah well nothing can do about it. May take it further with the clip was granted permission from C4 as was just bit of fun with medley of pictures / clips and got the e-mail saying was fine to use what i had n it, and the attheraces footage, baffled as to why they would have copywrite to that. Will know for next time though! Will look for Mininova Thanks!
June 27, 2008 at 15:00 #170369The New Zealand Racing Board actually post their own feature races on Youtube…(http://www.youtube.com/user/nzracing).
Why can’t the BHB do the same ?
June 27, 2008 at 16:07 #170383I agree they should
It is afterall completely free and what better way is there of advertising racing as a sport?
Getting videos of old races to watch, for many, was like pulling teeth before U-tube came along. They should be thankful it exisits.
June 27, 2008 at 16:16 #170387I assume everybody that would want to is adept at downloading the youtube vids onto your own PC ?
June 27, 2008 at 16:28 #170391I thought that the racing picture came from Racetech as they have the cameras around the racecourses and they must own the copyright.
You could always e-mail RUK,ATR,BBC,C4 and Clive Smith plus all the other owners, trainers, jockeys, commentators and people in the Grandstand and ask for their permission to be on YouTube.
It is an odd thing for RUK to do as you would have thought they would have been happy to have the races online over the world so people can see UK races but what can you do.

I’d suspect it has something to do with their ties to the Racing Post video library, and that that organ charges for viewing them.
June 28, 2008 at 14:19 #170543The 2008 Vodafone Derby has disappeared off the face of the YouTube earth.
Shattered.
June 28, 2008 at 16:02 #170566It’s a shame. All about money Not the amazing horses we are so lucky to have seen.
June 28, 2008 at 17:33 #170598Quite right KS
Money comes before sentiment it seems.
Good thing about YouTube is that it is a fantastic vehicle for sharing horse races on a worldwide scale in what is probably the only sport that has a huge international following.
June 29, 2008 at 09:23 #170662International copyright issues are very complicated, even within the EU their appears to be many discrepencies!!
Look at http://www.onextwo.com and you will find a video archive of all the races shown on Racing UK, this is a German Bookmaker site thus commercially seen they have more to gain than a “free for all` Youtube!!
June 29, 2008 at 09:33 #170663Money comes before sentiment it seems.
So if you had a product which had a commercial potential then you would be happy for a third party to take that product, give it away for nothing, therefore losing you potential income?
What a generous person you are

Just my opinion, but only the ardent racing fan is going to pay to view these, which does nothing at all to attract the non-committed into our sport.
Also, it’s a fair bet that the probably piddling amounts involved would be more than recovered by the increased advertising revenue from the much greater number of ‘hits’ on a free site. -
