After only 2 horses last season, wasn’t going to bother with this, but I’ll put up any I think are worth bearing in mind for targets later in the season.
Of last years 2, I still think Jett will be worth keeping in mind going jumping this season……..I remain hopeful.
Was good to see some decent jumpers out yesterday at Chepstow. I bet 2 in the big chase, and was very happy with Drop Out Joe, who hung on well, but I’m more interested long term in my #1 choice in the race, Sego Success. I thought it was a very pleasing comeback, and for a while, thought he was going to be involved. I’ll be more than happy to give him another chance, and he looks worth keeping in mind for a big staying chase this season, with The Scottish National looking ideal for him.
Looking forward to The Munster National today, and Shanpallas, and The Job Is Right in particular. After initially being against him in a couple of races, I’ve really warmed to Shanpallas, and think he might just surprise a few this season, especially with the standard of races he can get competitive in, whilst I reckon The Job Is Right can land a couple of the big marathons.
October 14, 2015 at 17:16 #1217612I was very impressed with Sego Success on comeback too, VTC. I’m glad you saw positives too. My own theory is that flat tracks suit him best. The Classic Chase and/or Scottish National could be the best bets, especially since Alan King has history with both races.
October 14, 2015 at 17:26 #1217614Excellent John, glad you noticed it too, and I think The Warwick Race is a good shout as well……….fingers crossed he can repay the faith
October 28, 2015 at 01:27 #1219391Not quite the kind of prize I had in mind, but The Job Is Right finally got his act together today at Galway over hurdles. Still see him as a potential Aintree horse, so after that today, I’ll keep him in mind for something like The Troytown.
Was looking forward to seeing Theinval try s trip over hurdles this season, but his season looks to be geared around the larger obstacles. Despite getting beaten after emptying out quickly near the end, I was very happy with his jumping, and he gave the hint of something of a plot horse. I’ll be keeping a close eye on him, and the novice handicap on day 1 at The Festival already looks a possible, as well as The Topham, especially if he keeps jumping like that.
Sat down to enjoy Bangor, and Galway today without a bet………and ended up with a bet at Catterick. I stuck a few quid on the outsider, Latenightrequest at decent odds on BF, as he looked well treated, and he ran a decent race, definitely a winner waiting to happen.
November 1, 2015 at 12:08 #1219943This time last year, there were only a handful of horses I was really looking forward to seeing, and near the top of the pile was the Tony Mullins trained Sammy Black. He absolutely routed a competitive enough field in The Mayo National, leading from start to finish. He looked awesome that day, then disappeared completely. He’s obviously had a few issues then, but interesting that Barry Connell has moved him to the Alan Fleming yard. After whatever issues he’s had he may be a watching brief, but back over hurdles today, I had to take the 10’s last night….if he’s retained his ability, he should go very close in this. If a successful return, it would still be difficult to pin down future targets, but after that race at Ballinrobe, I had him down as a good prospect for the better staying chases. If I’d known he was back in training, he’d have made my Ten To Follow for sure, I’d probably even have made him my star horse. I’ve got everything crossed that he’s over whatever stopped him re-appearing last year. ** No excuses, and never really competitive, nothing left to do but wait and see him in future races, to see of the old spark can come back**.
Watching the first race at Newmarket yesterday, without a bet, so not giving it 100%, but looked clear to me that Bumptious looked to have more to offer, and he was ridden just a little tenderly. He’s stright in The Tracker, and hopefully I can catch him at a price next season.
Sammy Black – If over his ailments, sky could be the limit.
Theinval – Could be very good as the season progresses in Novice Chases.
Jett – Well worth the watching as he goes novice hurdling this year.
Sizing John – Any issues with Douvan, and he could mop up a few decent prizes.
The Job Is Right – Back on track, and looking at something like The Troytown
Shanpallas – Still reckon, top end chases could come his way.
Sego Success – Scottish National written all over him, or as TYF says, The Classic Chase at Warwick.Future Winners? – Latenightrequest, and Bumptious
November 12, 2015 at 23:37 #1221440Only one bet this week (bar system bets), and that was Araldur in the big 3 miler at Bangor yesterday. I really liked him, and thought he was a ridiculous price at 33’s. I had a fair bet on him for a Wednesday at Bangor, and although he eventually finished 5th, he looked the winner for a long way, and I at least got a decent trade on him. As I said, travelled really well, before running out of steam near the business end, and it reminded me of his stablemate, Sego Success, at Chepstow, with both horses looking like having more to offer for their seasonal debut. Araldur is probably known more as hurdles horse, but he can handle the larger obstacles as well, and though he might not be starring at the big Festivals, I’m pretty sure Alan King can dig out a couple of nice prizes for him. Certainly worth noting that it was his first run over fences for well over 3 years, and King might just have a nicely handicapped chaser on his hands.
November 21, 2015 at 00:53 #1222495Didn’t get the chance to put up one of my horses to follow, Ttebbob, before he went and romped home at Thurles on Thursday. Put him up on The Novice Chase thread as one to keep an eye on, admittedly with Punchestown in mind, but after that display, well, he could just be Cheltenham bound. As good a round of jumping as I’ve seen from a Novice in a long while, and for a horse whom I had The World Hurdle in mind for at the start of the season, I’m now seeing him getting very competitive in the top end novice races. Surely more to come.
Tomorrow sees the return of one of my big hopes from last season, who unfortunately, never made it to the racecourse in Operating. Formerly with Jessica Harrington, he wast last seen easily taking care of Road To Riches, amongst others, in a very competitive race at the 2014 Punchestown Festival. Owned by Michael Buckley, he was then bought by the Rooneys, and became one of their many flops at the Donald McCain yard. The closest he got to running for McCain was being declared at Bangor, before eventually being a non-runner, and he then sat the rest of the season out. Now moved to Gordon Elliots yard, as part of the Rooneys clearout from the McCain stable, I’m hoping he can bounce back this season, though how he’s going to fare is anybodys guess, god knows what went on with him last year???
He starts off today in a very decent chase at Gowran Park, and maybe asking a lot for him to give weight to the very decent Smashing, who’s a worthy favourite. If he does retain his ability then, then I’ve got The Grand National in mind for him. This trip may be (a tad) on the sharp side today, but I’m hoping he comes back and shows that he’s still got more to offer, especially with Aintree in mind……………didn’t really tell me much today, other than he clearly needed it. Jumping wasn’t up to scratch either, so plenty to work on for Gordon Elliot. Not beyond him, but I’ll hold fire with him for Aintree at the moment, as his price ain’t going anywhere, and with time not on his side, the 2017 Renewal may be more realistic, though if he gets an entry for 2016 it’ll be of interest.
November 28, 2015 at 11:58 #1223621Sammy Black makes his comeback over fences today, and looking at conditions, I’m not sure it’s really for him, he seemed to love the summer ground that day he caught my eye, and though he has ran well on softer ground, I’m just hoping he has a nice spin round, and not getting my hopes built up……..glad I didn’t get my hopes built up, as despite a lot of money for him before the off, he went at the first. To be honest, he looked as if he would fall on the approach to it, looked too worked up. Very disappointing from him so far

Interesting runner today in The Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, in Cloudy Too. He’s a long term fancy for mine for The Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby, but trying to talk myself out of betting him today, as they’re clearly building him up for something………….well he’s certainly miles better than he showed in his last 2 runs
Less than 2 years ago he was running in The Gold Cup off 157, he’s now running off 142, 6lbs than lower than when winning The 2013 Rowland Meyrick, I’m sure he’s bound to pop up soon………….aaah **** it, he’ll like the soft going today, I’ll take a chance that todays the day
December 13, 2015 at 12:27 #1225800Hoping Ttebbob can put in another good round of jumping in the next at Navan. Only 2 rivals, but I’ll be very disappointed if he can’t justify being odds on favourite. Chucked a few quid his way for Cheltenham, but although he’s getting run around 2 miles, I’d really love to see him step up in trip in future races.
Very solid performance form Sego Success yesterday, with the only downside for me. was having no cash on him. I also liked Straidnahanna in the race, but both were too short for me, so had to cheers him on without a penny on. I really hope Sego doesn’t head to Chepstow now, as I already have 3 bet for that, but he has to come into the reckoning I suppose. Hopefully they’ll give him a rest now
December 14, 2015 at 18:02 #1225909Really happy with Ttebbob yesterday. Ok, it was a 3 horse race, and questionable what he beat, but very impressed with how he done it, and the jumping also impressed again.
Not sure if he’ll be good enough to take on the likes of Douvan & Sizing John over the minimum trip, but no question he’s going the right way, and I’ve bet him for both The Arkle & The JLT.
December 14, 2015 at 19:25 #1225916Was going to hold fire until I seen them out once more, but as I mentioned it on another thread, might as well mention it here too.
After their runs on Friday, both Blaklion, and Onenightinvienna had me thinking of The Scottish National for them. I’ll watch how they progress over the next couple of months.
December 19, 2015 at 12:06 #1226434I’ll have to put my money where my mouth is today, with Cloudy Too. Obviously had The Rowland Meyrick in mind for him for a while, but with that race a week away, looks like he won’t be going. I just think he’s a very well handicapped horse, and The Tommy Whittle will hopefully be a nice prize for him. Looks capable of landing a blow at 9’s, certainlly off the back of that run in The Rehearsal Chase.
December 20, 2015 at 13:51 #1226591Absolutely no excuses for Cloudy Too, and I had the small consolation of a few quid back each way. As much as he looks well handicapped, he just looks to have lost a wee bit of his zip. I’ll no doubt chuck a few quid at him in the future if he runs at a price………….and of course, should he get an entry at Wetherby.
December 20, 2015 at 13:59 #1226592Karezak
Had no real interest in backing him yesterday, but in the end, couldn’t resist a few quid at 50’s. Still a baby, I thought he ran a cracking race, considering the step up in trip, and the level of opposition he faced. I really hope they keep him over hurdles, as his run over fences last month was just adequate. Early days, but I think something like The Coral Cup could be ideal for him.December 20, 2015 at 14:56 #1226598Sternrubin
He looks really progressive, and I’d be very interested in him for The Betfair Hurdle, and if he continues the way he’s going, then I don’t think he’d disgrace himself in The Champion Hurdle either………honestly!!!! I just loved the way he battled back yesterday, and just the type of horse I like to keep on the right side of.December 27, 2015 at 13:12 #1227379Was gutted to see Ttebbob drop out so quickly yesterday at Leapordstown. He stopped very quickly, and I just hope he’s ok. Being realistic, he really had no right to be taking on the likes of Douvan, but if I’m being honest, based on what I had seen, I expected him to give Douvan a race for a while, but it was clear from early doors, that he wouldn’t be up to it. I’m just wondering if we’ll see him back over hurdles after this.
Operating runs in The Paddy Power today, and I’m looking to see a lot more from him, now with a run under his belt. He was poor last time, but I’ve just got to hope that Elliot can work his magic with him, and I hope he at least gets competitive today. A good run would see Aintree on the horizon surely, but all I’m hoping for is a sign of the old ability.
January 16, 2016 at 14:17 #1229766Sego Success, as hoped, will take in todays Classic Chase. Bet him in the week, and pleased to see him make it. Slight concerns over the reported heavy going, as Alan King stated he doesn’t like it. It doesn’t look too bad at least, though over 3 miles 5, that might be a different story.
Tough race, with De Kerry Man, his stablemate Midnight Prayer, and the Venetia Williams pair all looking big dangers. I’ve got a train of thought, that the reported coughing of Midnight Prayer wasn’t as bad as reported……….why would he be running here otherwise??? & if it is indeed to be his day, then I’d be very hopeful of Sego making amends at Ayr later in the year.
