Steve Mellish is the best pundit on tv imo, he likes to talk plenty but most of the time it makes alot of sense. I do wish he would take a breath more often and for some reason he never makes eye contact with whoever he’s talking to.
Thommo is terrible and sickening imo, its always ok more of that later but it never seems to come. Also he cant tip a winner on the ML or Racing News but expects people to ring his buzz line.
Zoey Bird completly clueless and is more fit for Blue Peter than ATR imo. She came out with a good one the other day. The race had a dead heat for 2nd but she still annouced the 3rd horse.
James Willoughby no doubt has a bit of knowledge but he seems to live in his own little twisted world and comes up with bulls**t
theories. He also thinks he is shrewder than he actually is and lmao when he seen electrocussionist go down last year on dirt before the maktoum round and swore he wudnt go an inch on dirt. While i’m on a roll Graham Goode really shud give up comentating as he’s getting worse. Same old crap he has been using for 25 years and he seems to see diff races from the rest of us by trying to make them exciting when the leader is 4 infront inside the final 100 yards.
May 27, 2007 at 20:37 #49854Steve Mellish reminds me of John Francome and Jim McGrath. All sound so knowledgable, say all the right things, make all the sense in the world ………………………. until they have to provide a selection. OH DEAR!! They couldn’t tip rubbish. I suppose its the equivalent of "talking a good game" in football.

May 27, 2007 at 20:42 #49856Imo there is a difference between being a good pundit and tipster, sometimes you can know too much and for certain reasons it may put u off the winner. John Francome sounds knowledgable? Richard Pitman is another, for a man who has been in racing as long as him is clueless.
May 27, 2007 at 20:43 #49858thing is flash, as regards mellish, in most cases he is obliged to give a selection despite not considering a race as a good betting heat. If you take note of the runners he has ruled out and why you will appreciate how good he is.
He is a gentleman by the way, takin time out of a busy raceday schedule to talk to an ordinary race going gobs**t
e like me…………(Edited by heffo at 9:46 pm on May 27, 2007)
Your ordinary heffo, dont for one second think your inferior to those ordinary guys that masquerade as TV pundits.

Who’s that david? Is it Lydia?
I agree with you about him getting the sex wrong, it’s very annoying all the time.
May 28, 2007 at 18:43 #49864Quote: from Pompete on 12:37 am on Mar. 31, 2007[br]For example, surely Tanya’s role on C4 is to comment on what’s happening on the exchanges in responce to Big Mac’s view of the betting ring.
Yes, so why is it that she cannot read the "exchanges" to save her life??
I agree with the multitudes about how dire Chapman is as well.
You’ll struggle to beat Eddie the Shoe as a decent pundit IMO – apart from anything else he is one of the very few who isn’t all about the self-posturing and tarting about that most of the others are.
May 28, 2007 at 22:54 #49867In principle, I like the way Chapman tries to insert a little colour into everything, but I can’t listen to him, because that, to me, over-enthusiastic, loud style of patter he delivers is way over-the-top.
Some people, I’m sure, love it – it’s a matter of taste. But I’d prefer his voice pitched at a normal unexcited level; and if I had to choose between extremes, well… in fact, I prefer humour to be quiet and undertstated – so that you need a double-take, and sometimes end up wondering if the bloke actually knew how funny what he said was. The Aussies are the masters at that.
On the other hand, I’m not sure it suits Chapman’s colourful, very American kind of spiel, which can also be hilarious. Their version of "getting a grip" or "dropping on someone from a great height", is "kicking butt and taking names". That wouldn’t be a bad description of a champion race-horse’s annihilation of his field, would it?
It’s just the degree of volume that’s an issue with me. And I’m pretty deaf. But many people, I believe, love it.
May 29, 2007 at 05:55 #49868I can’t take Chapman in any way shape or form, but he’s not really a ‘tipster’ or ‘pundit’.
The biggest waste of space on a TV screen is probably Pitman, he’s completely clueless, which is weird considering his experience.
Thommo does have the ability to bring a race to life for the audience, I just can’t stand him interviewing anyone.
James Willoughby I could listen to for hours, he’s so droll!
The tipster I take most notice of is Jason Weaver. He’s great at spotting little details that make a horse stand out, where others might hav emissed it. David Duggan’s one to be listened to as well.
May 29, 2007 at 16:07 #49870Aussie Jim McGrath has got abit of stick on this thread.
He was certainly on fire today at Leicester with his tipping.
What about these for winners, Intiquilla 14/1 and Yerevan 12/1. He was particulary sweet on Yerevan.
Every dog has it’s day, I suppose.

Jason Weaver is good at tipping anything that is below 2/1 and that is outta the Mark Johnston stable. He must be getting hid card marked from sum1 in it still. David Duggan is a decent irish tipster but he does have alot of contacts and alot of them are from the trainer and not through hard work.

Yup as proved by me yesterday, with Uig at 12/1 and the Gaikwar at 20/1! Who’d a thunk it? If only I’d had money on……….
