I’ll be backing Cusoon as a matter of course, but the possibility of a lack of pace is worrying if only having him on my side.
The only other two that really appeal are Gentleman’s Deal and Alfie Flits, with slight preference for the former. There is a lot to like about Flits, who has an edge of class about him, but the ten furlong trip might just be too sharp (though he ran well over it at Sandown behind Kandidate last year).
March 22, 2007 at 19:56 #47993I’m on Cusoon too. Quite a good draw. Why is Sri Diamond out though?
March 22, 2007 at 20:39 #47995My first choice is Gentlemans’s Deal, but I also have a liking for Clive Brittain’s Hattan at 10s.
March 22, 2007 at 20:49 #47996Sri Diamond is out as he suffered a late setback (an infection in his leg)
March 22, 2007 at 21:01 #48000Cusoon,Blue Bajan,Cimyla & GD make it between the 4. Ifs with most of these too though, as has been said though with a properly run race Cusoon by a sh ;) .
March 22, 2007 at 21:11 #48001If you fancy GD in this, you have to consider Grand Passion over this trip. Saying that, I’d love Blue Bajan to win this, but stall one is a complete nightmare.
March 22, 2007 at 23:42 #48003Here’s my take on the Winter Derby which looks a bit of a nightmare to be honest, it could end up a muddling sort of race but here goes anyway…
ALFIE FLITS (7) (First time trying the surface, trip could be on the sharp side on seasonal reappearance, has ability but best watched on this occasion)
BLUE BAJAN (1) (Unlucky not to have beaten Cusoon last time, Cusoon was fitter having had a few runs, Blue Bajan should reverse the form with Cusoon with that run under his belt, ought to go close, his Cambridgeshire run last year behind Formal Decree also reads well)
BOO (8) (Not shown much recently and I’d be surprised if good enough)
CIMYLA (6) (Another not shown much in recent runs at Nad Al Sheba but could go well at decent odds if back on song)
CUSOON (3) (In fine form and will run his race but I prefer Blue Bajan to gain his revenge)
GENTLEMAN’S DEAL (4) (First run here but has won on polytrack at Kempton, trip a slight worry but is in form and should run well)
GRAND PASSION (2) (Similar chance to Gentleman’s Deal but will like the trip, a bit in and out formwise and hasn’t won in ten races, lively longshot for a place if on a going day)
HATTAN (10) (Win record not good but has been running well at Nad Al Sheba, not best drawn and a place is best he can hope for)
ILLUSTRIOUS BLUE (9) (Another who runs here for the first time but has won at Kempton on the surface, also won last time at Nad Al Sheba so comes here in good form, one of the likelier ones)
MIGHTY (12) (Has improved over the winter and would have to improve again, was outpaced against Cusoon last time after beating that rival previously in a tactical affair, isn’t drawn well in 12 so is overlooked, a horse I like though)
ORCHARD SUPREME (5) (Likes the polytrack but is a bit in and out formwise, could find trouble in running again as he has done on a few occasions)
SPEEDY SAM (11) (Behind Orchard Supreme last time and doesn’t look up to this)
1. Blue Bajan
2. Illustrious Blue
3. Cusoon
4. Grand Passion
Now watch it all go tits up
Thanks, what a shame.
March 23, 2007 at 12:24 #48006Mmm,
if i were the trainer of Gentlemans Deal , i’d tell my pilot to take the bull by the horns, get to the front, dictate the pace, start getting my fella into full swing from around 3f home and say ta, ta to the rest and play catch me if you can

March 23, 2007 at 12:53 #48007And if I were Alan Swinbank, I’d tell Spencer to track him.
March 23, 2007 at 13:14 #48009Your tactics wil still only result in your horse being placed DJ ;) :)
March 23, 2007 at 17:28 #48011i might be changing my mind  , swap it for one that works.:o
March 23, 2007 at 17:57 #48012Hello,
Good summing up Jim, the more I look at it, the more difficult it appears…may only deal in small money, but on what? Still think ORCHARD SUPREME could be the surprise package, but not a mortgage job!:)
regards,
doyley
