If a French horse was runner up Dylan Thomas would have been chucked out in seconds. But it was just another example of Fallon unable to keep his horse running straight. As said many times before if its brute force well you got it, but anyone who puts this overrated jockey in the same league as say Piggott Eddery & Cauthen to name just a few, are in cloud cuckoo land.
October 8, 2007 at 11:21 #118468Dylan Thomas has tendency to edge right, something he’s done in Britain this year when partnered by different jockeys.

Virtually every horse Fallon rides has a tendency to hang, because he is not in total sync with the flesh underneath him.
October 8, 2007 at 11:52 #118479Fallon is a very good strong jockey and I agree that he’s not in the same class as Piggott Eddery & Cauthen + a few others I could mention.
I read in the RP today that british bookmakers only pay first past the post on british races and not on foreign ones such as the arc. I was not aware of this and I wonder how many other punters who had places their bets with a british bookie thought that they had nothing to worry about regarding the enquiry.
October 8, 2007 at 12:22 #118485I may be wrong, but wasn’t it noticed a few years ago that there were a few O’Brien horses that hung under pressure in big-race finishes? This dates back to the time Jamie Spencer rode for them – was there one case in the Breeders Cup?
October 8, 2007 at 12:31 #118486For those who have the patience to review former Arc winners ridden by English jockeys may I suggest that they will find that Eddery on Dancing Brave and Kinane on Carrols House both caused interference by heading straight for the rail as soon as they got their noses in front. Kinane was subject to an enquiery and Eddery should have.Neither was punished. Before replying please study both of those races.
October 8, 2007 at 12:33 #118487MM,
I would be interested to know your thoughts on why you think Fallon is over-rated.
He has won the British Jockey Championship on 6 occassions. It’s hard to think how any jockey can manage this without being a very very good jockey.
He has won 15 English Classic’s. Not all of them where on short priced fav’s like Authorized in the Derby – and the winning jockey on that horse has been touted for a knighthood and to be Sports Personality of the Year. It’s hard to think of any present day jockeys that you would rate above Fallon that have a better record.
I’m not going to compare him to the jockey’s you have mentioned, but purely and simply on race riding and achievements in the saddle, I would say it’s almost bordering on ridiculous to say that Fallon is over-rated. But of course, this is jus your opinion, and my opinion is that he isn’t.

Is the horse you are thinking of Antonius Pigus.
October 8, 2007 at 12:53 #118493Who loved the rail at Longchamp so much that he tried to eat it.
October 8, 2007 at 13:56 #118508I’ve never ridden a horse so may be speaking a load of cobblers here, but with regards to horses hanging doesn’t it follow that more top jockeys will be seen on horses that hang/drift in a finish than run-of-the-mill jocks?
Why? Because…
a) Horses are more likely to hang/drift at the end of a race when going all-out to win than when trailing in at the rear.
b) Top jocks will feature more often on hanging horses as they are involved in more all-out finishes.
Simple really.Had Dylan Thomas no chance of winning from some way out, he wouldn’t have have drifted.
Had Piggott / Cauthen etc. etc. at their best have been on DT, he might not have drifted/hung – but then again he might not have won the damn race. I’m not saying KF is better than LP or SC, but just that horses that are giving their all are more likely to hang than those that aren’t. Perhaps we should be praising Fallon for getting DT to give his all (and in the process drift a bit) and to win than if he’d been unable to get DT to give it all and got beat (but kept a true course).October 8, 2007 at 14:29 #118513I would say it’s almost bordering on ridiculous to say that Fallon is over-rated.
Depends what the rating is. But when a certain well known journalist tells us that hes the "best ever"….. overrated is a mild description
I dont even think hes the best riding at the moment, let alone all time ffs
October 8, 2007 at 14:51 #118516Thanks dj and Gareth, it was Antonius Pius that was controversially 2nd in a couple of big foreign races. Jamie also rode Powerscourt, who was disqualified from the Arlington Million after hanging and causing interference. Maybe this hanging is something in the way O’Brien trains, maybe it’s in their genes, or maybe it’s statistically quite a reasonable number of occurrences given his high number of big-race competitors.
October 8, 2007 at 16:17 #118530I’m in cloud cuckoo land too. Keiren is certainly one of the great jockeys.
October 8, 2007 at 16:18 #118531be brutely honest Kieron is a way more determined and able jockey than Pat Eddery. I only saw Pat in the latter part of his career but I stand by that.
have you considered that maybe you should be judging him against Eddery’s peak?
And how can you dismiss the comparson with Cauthen (a genuinely brilliant jockey and a class above Fallon IMO) when clearly you didnt see him at his peak either?
October 8, 2007 at 16:21 #118532How can anyone question Fallon as a jockey? The guy is pure brilliance. To be riding at all with all whats going on in his life is something in itself. He hasn’t been at his best but when he is Fallon is certainly better than Eddery and is comparable with the very best.
He’s twice the jockey Dettori is thats for certain.

No sympathy from me until we know the outcome of the trial
