Talking bull…. as per normal.
EDIT: About Vautour.
Value Is EverythingMarch 17, 2016 at 15:27 #1238440Missed that what did he say? I’m guessing about Vautour not being fit enough for the GC?
March 17, 2016 at 16:25 #1238461Look lads Mullins doesn’t talk bull. There was a lot of people giving out about his comments about voix du reve yesterday saying about the horse being two stone wrong. People didn’t listen to what he actually said. He said “based on the horses performance the last day he looks to be about 2 stone wrong at the weights, we are hoping to get in the first four, the stronger gallop will help and we hope the hood will also improve him.”
People just focused on the two stone bit rather than the comments as a whole and this happens quite regularly with people misquoting mullins
March 17, 2016 at 16:33 #1238465See edit TWM.
Value Is EverythingMarch 17, 2016 at 16:39 #1238466I am sorry but I am not sure he knows what is going on at all!!
Earlier he was asked a question about something and his reply was something like ” You will have to ask David Casey about that!”
And yesterday before the Fred winter he was asked about Voix De Reve and he said it had next to no chance and would have to improve two stone to get anywhere near the first four and then what happens? ……
The horse is flying and comes to challenge and maybe win and falls at the last !!
Not exactly the words of a man who knows what he is doing.
For me he must have some outstanding staff because it is obviously not his genius that is getting all these winners!!
March 17, 2016 at 16:40 #1238468I’ve always liked Mullins, but he has done himself and many punters a considerable disservice over this carry on.
I’d have had much less of an issue if he’d been honest and said, ‘We’re pretty confident we can win the GC with Djakadam and I’d rather win 2 races than 1, so, sorry to all the punters, but Vautour is very, very well and goes in the Ryanair.’
By concocting the daft story to try and get Ricci off the hook, they’ve ruined Gold Cup bets, Ryanair bets and then discouraged punters from backing Vautour in the Ryanair by saying the horse was not right. Had they told the truth, Vautour would have been 2/1 on or shorter for that.
March 17, 2016 at 16:40 #1238469Wexford you may be biased about Willie or maybe a little more forgiving than most!!
March 17, 2016 at 17:07 #1238477Since when did the trainers train horses for the betting industry, he has won races and done exactly what he is paid to do by his owners – win races.
March 17, 2016 at 17:12 #1238479I have total respect for him and I know Ruby is a great jockey also but I’m getting very tired of them winning everything. Not even sure if I’m going to watch the racing tomorrow [but probably will].
March 17, 2016 at 17:15 #1238481Wexford you may be biased about Willie or maybe a little more forgiving than most!!
Are you saying if Willie was English, what TWM thinks about the Vautour affair might be a little different Raymo?
Value Is EverythingMarch 17, 2016 at 17:28 #1238482|No GT I was in no way inferring anything regarding Nationality.
I was inferring that some people may have a better/different view of Willie Mullins.
I know trainers are paid to train horses for their owners but IMO and it is only an opinion Willie Mullins is the figurehead of an operation that is very successful but my opinion is he personally hasn’t a clue what is going on regarding horses best trips etc.
And I can only emphasize it is my opinion!
March 17, 2016 at 17:29 #1238483Haha lads yes I might be biased towards Mullins but it was the right decision for Ryanair and perhaps the problem was the comments by Ricci rather than the comments by Willie. I wouldnt care whether it was done by an irish man or an Englishman to be honest I try to look at each on their merits. But Mullins because he is so media friendly is in a lose-lose situation because if he sends a horse to a certain race someone will drag up something he said 4 months ago that the horse might go to a different race. Black Hercules is a good example.
When it’s all said and done when does he ever send a horse to the wrong race? Look at yorkhill as an example.
All I’m saying is that people are giving him too much stick by only half quoting him or not listening to the full statement. for example He would often say “at the moment it looks like bellshill will go to the Neptune and yorkhill to the supreme but we will have to see how they work and see what else we have for those races”Then based on something like that people will quote Mullins as saying “bellshill goes neptune” and the money will pile on when in fact he didn’t actually say that at all.
March 17, 2016 at 18:37 #1238498Wexfordman, do you thinks it’s good for racing for Mullins to keep all his stars apart? Will we be able to attract new people into the sport if they don’t see the best horses race each other?
Imagine if Nicholls had kept Kauto in the Ryanair and Denman in the Gold Cup. Or Easterby hadn’t run Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon in possibly the greatest Champion Hurdle ever run.
Final question TWF. Will Annie Power be allowed to defend her title against Faugheen?
March 17, 2016 at 19:04 #1238505TWM, I’m not half-quoting him. This was published on the morning of 11 March on Sportinglife.com, so the quote to the Sun must have been made on or before 10th March
The County Carlow handler told The Sun: “Vautour has done far better work this week than he has in the last three (weeks).
“That tells me he should go for the Gold Cup. Every year at Christmas Vautour disappoints us a bit, and every year he improves in the spring and for the hill at Cheltenham. This year looks no different. We expect a huge run.”
As I’ve said, he is entitled to do what he wants with his horses. So is Ricci. The problem here is they have not been honest. Mullins and Ruby are saying today that the horse only came fully alive ‘this morning – with the sun on his back’. Utter nonsense.
Ruby said at a preview 10 to 14 days ago that he’d be doing whatever was needed to convince Ricci to switch Vautour to the Ryanair. A few days later Tony Mullins says publicly that Vautour would run in the Ryanair unless Djakadam wasn’t ready. Neither mentioned anything about the horse working poorly. This has been a plot, and I suspect it has been driven more by Ruby than by Mullins who should – I hope – regret being drawn into it all.
However it was that they came to the conclusion that they should switch, they should just have said they had changed their minds. It’s looking increasingly likely the story was cooked up to help change Ricci’s mind (going by his post-race comments).
It will be interesting to see the fallout from all of this. It wouldn’t be a huge shock to me if Ricci takes his horses away.
March 17, 2016 at 19:23 #1238511If Djakadam wins tomorrow, there is going to be a huge public appetite for a race between him and Vautour to find out which is best.
Next season, people will want to see if Douvan can beat Vautour/Djakadam.
I hope we’re not denied those match-ups, but fear we will.
That’s without even thinking about what hurdle clashes will be denied us.
March 17, 2016 at 19:33 #1238514March 17, 2016 at 19:49 #1238519Forget journalists, stewards should be asking questions.
Did someone connected to team Vautour get better odds for Vautour in the Ryanair due to what was said previously?
