‘I’m not sure why so many awards shows seem to have turned into comedy roasts.’

This is the difference, if you turn up to an actual comedy show then you can’t go crying to anyone when the comedian makes jokes about you. What else do you expect? It’s part of what they do. You pretty much give the comedian permission to rip you to shreds, especially if sitting near the front.

An awards show or darts exhibition is different, it might be a comedy show second, but that’s not the primary purpose of the event. Some people are OK with being roasted, others aren’t. The ones that aren’t might react in some way.

I am sure I have seen clips from past awards from back in the seventies where certain people tore into each other, but all ‘seemed’ to take it and provided a ‘jolly good laugh’ for the evening at someone else’s expense.

With emotional and near and sometimes over the top remarks however, Sunday just showed due to a number of factors that things can go wrong.

You make a very good point, Colin.
If Bristow had said that about my girlfriend hope I would not have reacted like Will Smith.
However, in truth, in the heat of the moment I may well have reacted the same way. Not that it is the right way.

One thing is for sure, the mental health of people suffering from verbal abuse disguised in humour is more than any comedian gets from one slap. It’s one reason I myself have social anxiety. A ginger stammerer often the butt of jokes made by drunks fancying themselves as comedians.

That said, although violence may help the perpetrator in that specific moment. Over time it just makes it even more difficult for the butt to forget and (often just as importantly to that person) for others to forget.

Really depends who the individual is, how well you know them perhaps etc but have seen instances where so called banter was just pure bullying.

It can be used to belittle, and that’s where those attacking should expect reprisals of some form for dishing it out.

Funny as I have confronted several people who were dishing it out, and when you just stand up to them they collapse like a pack of cards. They can’t handle it back which them puts them in the realms of being a coward.

    Would this Will have been
related to Bill as in Bill Smith ?
If so, Bill was a bit of a slugger.

Richard88, completely agree with your comments. If you go to a comedy club I think you have to accept you may have some interaction with the comedian, welcome or otherwise. But awards shows are supposedly celebrating the best of their industry, and I see no reason why you should have to endure unsolicited barbed comments to collect a prize.

Obviously attending the Comedy Awards themselves seems a reasonable exception to this rule. This may be a much riskier business, even when you are not actually there, as Norman Lamont would no doubt confirm.

I thought Norm was more into tragedy.
Look Will the smash Smith should be locked up with Oscar the lodger.
I held Patricia Neal’s Oscar when she was sleeping with Roald upstairs. He gave me a £1.50 tip earlier – he was the man …Hud suddenly wasn’t neither was Paul Newman/Pat Neal and the light fandango.
I was more interested in the Bacon hanging on the wall – the kids had let me in the safe room. Dahl would have had a fit if he’d known but we kept it all shhh secret.

You should be able to make a joke about anything, absolutely anything.

American awards shoes are generally roasts, dont attend and sit in the front if you dont want to be apart of it…

Idiotic to defend it with “if it was my girlfriend” it wasnt, end of.

And bear in mind, these two morons sat on live tv and divulged their biggest secrets about cheating on each other to all the other nonsense,

Both have lost the plot, completely, as have there kids.

    Its their lives
    their worries
    Oh whoa whoa
    Create a story
    then run
    like a fugitive

    News beats fiction
    in 2022
    You gotta be a wanderer
    and go round and round
    forget their lives
    ‘n’ their worries too

    No publicity is bad publicity.

When the only thing everyone is talking about with these 2022 Oscars is a slap.
No publicity for the Oscar winners is bad publicity for them.

tbh ham, in life I find it necessary and easier to put myself in everyone’s shoes.
Not only how I myself would feel. Also as the person him / herself, given their position and what they may be going through at the time – which can be different from my own perspective.

Otherwise I don’t come to a balanced view and lack empathy.

    “everyone” – excuse me?

Actually, I do know who Will Smith is (my feigned ignorance being a particularly pompous – even by my standards! – affectation) but I cannot understand why so many people obsess about the lives of “celebrities.”

In my Thesaurus, the synonym for “celebrity” would be “inconsequential.”

I do, however, agree about empathy – there’s not enough of it about and I’m with GT on that one.

    Exactly, who give a flying….

Are these people supposed to be role models in anyway?

By “everyone” Ian, I mean if you’re going to have an opinion about the rights and wrongs of something that’s happened… I think it is important to think of how all the people (in this case three) were feeling at the time – not just from one person’s perspective.

I don’t have an opinion about everything so not “everyone” in that sense.

tbh I always avoid the Oscars as have little interest in movies, even less movie stars and the world of celebrity. However this is a news story.
