“His wife definitely has a hold of him, he laughed at the joke initially.”
Yes, that is what I thought. It looked like he was trying to prove himself to her after she disapproved of the remark and his reaction to it.
March 29, 2022 at 17:38 #1590270I saw the incident as stupidly we stuck the telly on in the bedroom when we
went to bed. I wasn’t aware at the time, or when I posted when I woke up
that she had Alopecia. I thought it was a comment about her hair style.
Was it generally known?. If Chris Rock knew then it was in poor taste.Nonetheless, as I mentioned earlier, even with this, Smith was out of order
by walking up and striking him. It’s all very well for him stating “violence
is poisenous” after the event. If he believed that before the incident it
shouldn’t have happened. He had all the time walking up to Rock to reconsider,
if it was an immediete lash out at someone beside him, it would still have been
wrong, but perhaps slightly more understandable.March 29, 2022 at 18:53 #1590279“Chat sh*t, get banged.” – Jamie Vardy.
March 29, 2022 at 18:54 #1590280tbh I think Chris Rock owes it to his profession to make an official complaint.
After this, comedians like Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Carr better treble their security. Not only at gigs but also in their private life. If Will Smith gets away with striking a comedian then if anyone in any audience feels insulted (or their spouse feels insulted) is now far more likely to take the law into their own hands.Got great sympathy with Mrs Smith and I don’t like this form of insulting humour either – but there is no excuse for this. Those who think hitting a comedian for a joke that insults their wife is somehow ok or “chivalrous”… is living in a different age. If Will Smith wanted to do the right thing he could’ve easily grabbed the mike and explained to the audience what torment alopecia can be (especially for women) and demanded an apology.

@GSP Why is Smith’s wife a “slapper”?
What a distasteful remark. It’s an ‘open marriage’, but only she can have sexual relations with others apparently.
The fool must really love her.March 29, 2022 at 19:41 #1590293If Will Smith is ok with it then she is not a “slapper”.
Value Is EverythingMarch 29, 2022 at 19:44 #1590295I have a daughter. If she grows up wanting different sexual partners, ok. Part of life. Anyone who calls her a “slapper” will wish the Fresh Prince was after them.
A vile term.

March 29, 2022 at 19:45 #1590296Is he OK with it, though?
March 29, 2022 at 19:54 #1590301May be he is ok with it, may be not. But is still up to them and them alone.

He should have slapped the slapper mucking about with the rapper.
YO!
March 29, 2022 at 21:05 #1590315‘Definitely don’t think that was staged. Always been a fan of Chris Rock but that joke was in poor taste tbh and a bit of a low blow, still don’t think Smith was right to go up there and hit him though. Like others have said if any of us did that at work we’d be sacked on the spot. Hate the double standards.’
This is about right. I don’t think either of them comes out of this very well so if it was staged it backfired. Yes, violence isn’t the answer but to be honest, if you make a personal attack on someone’s wife in front of the whole of Hollywood and millions of viewers worldwide, don’t be surprised to receive a smack in the mouth. If he’d made a general joke about alopecia that would have been ok IMO, making it personal does cross a line. I’m not going to say Smith is right to do what he did but I won’t say it’s wrong either. However I’m not going to lose a huge amount of sleep for the multimillionaire Smiths or the multimillionaire Chris Rock, I’m sure they’ll all get over it.
The thing that amazes me most is that a man has made a joke about a woman’s appearance, an aspect of her appearance that she has no choice over even, and that’s barely been talked about.
I also stand by my opinion that all awards shows are desperately dull affairs that exist only to massage the egos of those involved.
March 29, 2022 at 22:12 #1590319Couldn’t agree more Richard. Who really gives a flying……
Most of them are PC, opinionated and part of the wokeism problem that has gripped our planet.
Telling us what to do, go without this and that, whilst living in their own comfy lifestyles.
Hypocrites!
March 29, 2022 at 22:40 #1590320That’s a bloody big generalisation, GSP.
Am equally against woke as you. However…
tbh I don’t hear many of them telling us what to do or to go without.
Just because a few big mouths do doesn’t mean most do.
If the wealthy Hollywood set were to hear two or three ordinary people telling them what to do and therefore judge most ordinary people as the same… we wouldn’t like it. So to judge them in this way must surely be equally wrong…Unless we are the “hypocrites”.
I never watch award ceremonies either, but they are still people.
No matter how little or how much money someone has – everyone has the same rights.Value Is EverythingMarch 29, 2022 at 22:44 #1590321Do we know that Chris Rock knew Mrs Smith had Alopecia?
Value Is EverythingMarch 30, 2022 at 01:41 #1590335Ginger, I wondered that too. Make of this what you will…
I’m not sure why so many awards shows seem to have turned into comedy roasts. I expect some people find it a pleasurable antidote to all the backslapping and sermonising, but it seems out of place to me.
March 30, 2022 at 05:58 #1590345To bring this closer to home. In our local Eric Bristow was giving one of those exhibition nights. He was fine early on chatting about football and Spurs in particular. After the darts were over he was asked to say a few words. Quite tanked up by this time and he came out with a comment about our, a really lovely woman, Hayley. Hayley herself will admit she’s a big girl (I think perhaps one of those dietary conditions) – “she’s a big girl, looks as if she’s eaten ‘arf a cow”. It all went very quiet and Bristow was encouraged to leave the room by his team.I had been talking to Hayley when he came out with the crass remark, she reacted as if she had been kicked and looked to shrivel up. I think the customers still around were unsure of how to react. Somebody ploughs into him, there were some who would have, but it was allowed to pass quietly. He did come back to apologise but that didn’t do Hayley’s self-esteem any good at all.
I think my sympathies are with Smith but I think he could have handled his reaction better.
Hayley still shudders when Bristow’s name is mentioned. He is not a very nice man under the influence of alcohol.
March 30, 2022 at 08:36 #1590351Not sure she is aware but Bristow died 4 years ago Colin so whether that gives Hayley any peace.
