Is John ‘Mr Sedgefield’ Wade still a permit holder?
It’s ‘his’ conditionals’ selling hurdle tomorrow though yer man is without a runner. None of his bad enough to qualify I expect
January 7, 2008 at 22:27 #133973No longer, Drone – Atticus Boy is trained by Wade for one Iain Herity, and he’s also had runners on the Flat for the last three seasons.

January 7, 2008 at 22:34 #133976Thanks, his reputatation is growing then, and not before time.
No idea he’d had runners on the Flat
January 7, 2008 at 22:45 #133978Aye, he’s 2 from 43 on the Flat since his first runner in that sphere in August 2005. Would you believe this bastion of point-to-points, selling hurdles and 3m3f chases has sent out nine 2yo runners as well?
The wins came with Domino Dancer (89 rated at best) at Newcastle in June 2007 and Fadansil at Hamilton a month later. He owns both.

January 7, 2008 at 23:12 #133980Over the jumps: Ewan Williams, and Venetia Williams… presuming that I have a horse of modest ability, and just want to make the best of their handicap mark with shrewd placing.
January 7, 2008 at 23:31 #133983Evan Williams and ‘shrewd’ placing…..that did make me laugh.
January 7, 2008 at 23:41 #133986Must update you Jeremy. Nick Alexander now holds a full license granted in the summer. He has been absent from meetings over the last few weeks following a serious accident when one of his took a right turn off the gallop one morning and deposited him against a fence post.

I had Westfield Dancer’s sequence of wins in my mind; he made the best of a low handicap mark by getting lots of wins out of the horse, over hurdles and fences, in a short amount of time.
And I’m sure he’s done it with a few other horses at the same lowly level. And that’s what I’d want if I had a similar horse.
January 8, 2008 at 00:19 #133990Cheers, Wallace, didn’t know about any of that. Awful news about his accident – as if Fearless Foursome’s fatal accident on the gallops a year ago wasn’t a big enough blow for the operation.
Any news on whether his daughter Lucy is going to be seen a bit more under Rules once he does get things up and running? She enjoyed some great educative (and winning) rides in Ladies’ Open point-to-points partnering Wise Man last season, and appears to have something to offer.

January 8, 2008 at 21:02 #134141Jeremy, yes Lucy will be out again this coming Point season although she will now be competing for rides as her brother Kit has now turned 16 and has done extremely well in pony racing.

January 9, 2008 at 01:54 #134173GC, i’m intrigued by this. What exaclty does having a license that is’nt "full" mean for a trainer? Can he only have so many runners a year, or something like that? i know you said your not 100% on one aspect of it but basically have you any sort of idea or does any one else know what the difference is between permit holder and full licensed member, and what the difference is in terms of what a trainer can do.
thanks in advance.
In its simplest terms, a permit-holder may only train horses for himself and his immediate family, and only over jumps at that.
Within those parameters, there is no extra impediment to the sort of race a permit-holder may enter a horse in compared to full license holders, barring the usual ones (i.e not in hunters’ chases if the horse ran after October 31st the same season).
Nor is there any numeric limit to how often a permit-holder may send out horses in a season. Norman Mason was champion permit-holder for several years running in the late 1990s / early noughties, saddling 208, 235, 238 and 278 runners in the seasons 1998-9 through to 2001-2.
Dr Richard Newland absolutely striped the permit-holder’s championship (such as it exists) last season, though as discussed he is now a public trainer with a full license.
Current permit-holders (of the literally hundreds there are still registered out there, though not all of them necessarily active at present) you may have heard of include;
Nick Alexander (Fearless Foursome)
Alan Blackmore (Cool Roxy)
Roger Brookhouse (Leo’s Luckyman, Salt Cellar)
Ted Caine (Quixall Crossett, Monaughty Man)
Oliver Carter (Venn Ottery, Otter Way, Ottery News)
John Dixon (Jumbo’s Dream, Crofton Arch)
Jo Fierro (Silver Gift, Just Beth)
Donald Forster (Ossmoses, Kid Smartie)
Sirrel Griffiths (Norton’s Coin, Tirikumba)
Ann Hamilton (Divet Hill)
Susan Handley (Papillon de Iena)
Richard Harper (Wot No Cash, Masterpoint)
Jonathan Haynes (Silver Dagger)
Richard Hewitt (Curly Spencer)
Martin Hogan (Beare Necessities)
Harry Hogarth (King Killone, Red Rampage)
Paul Jones (Stripe Me Blue)
Peter Kelsall (Rufius)
Fred Kirby (Sound of Cheers, Forest Dante)
Peter Maddison (Lothian Falcon)
Robin Mathew (Heartache)
Tony Middleton (Mossman Gorge, Tooka)
John Needham (Another Joker)
Rayson Nixon (Political Tower, Hush Tiger)
Susan Nock (Senor El Betrutti, Demasta)
John Payne (Athnowen, Wimbleball)
Pip Payne (Oakfield Legend)
Stewart Pike (Proud Sun, Sovietica)
Charles Pogson (Lord Baskerville, Bronson F’Sure)
Jill Scrase (Neltina)
Evelyn Slack (Mighty Fine, Barney, Cash Man)
Keith Thomas (Northern Echo)
Ailie Tulllie (More Flair)
Robert Waley-Cohen (Katarino, Bica, Irilut)
Jimmy Walton (Posh Stick, Garden Feature)
Arthur Whiting (Hazeljack, Apple John)
Willie Young (Roadworthy, Son of Snurge)This represents a bit of a brain-dump, admittedly.

The highest-profile permit-trained winners of races in my lifetime of racing would include Red Marauder and Grittar in the Grand National, and Norton’s Coin in the Gold Cup, though I’m sure I’d recall more if I gave it a few more minutes’ thought.
I trust this is of help.

The great thing about permit holders they always seem to find at least one good horse. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact they spend a lot more time with them and really getting to know the horse than the average trainer can. I remember John Dixon having more than a few winners and David Goudling’s young brother John riding for him. If JD had a horse entered you sat up and took notice……But the one I remember best, for good reason, was hotel owner Norman Dalgetty who trained up in the Borders….all he did was line them up for touches and he was very good at it…he had a real nice horse called Braw Lad who Donal Nolan used to ride for him. I was lucky enough to be there when we landed a massive touch at Kelso…..The crack was brilliant that night in his hotel and I couldn’t begin to describe how happy he was that all his hard work ended in the way it did. Seeing the joy on his face made my mind up, that some day I would own my own horse, which I did a few years later.
January 9, 2008 at 09:59 #134208FoF,
Was that the same Dalgetty family that had crack hunter chaser Davy Blake in training during the 1990s? I always wished they’d aimed a little higher and moved into staying handicap chases a bit sooner with that one.

Cheers for that. What odds the two of them jumping the last in unison at Balcormo Mains come April, then!
