I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but who exactly are the small band of people that stand next to each fence during NH races, and who then see to/mend/repair the obstacles once the horses have passed? Are they racecourse employees, or volunteers? Just thinking their numbers could be in to the dozens at some of the longer courses, and I’m always strangely fascinated by their movements behind the action as the race progresses.
January 25, 2022 at 17:02 #1579843Normally done by the grounds team that work for the course.
January 25, 2022 at 18:29 #1579847Yeah the groundsmen
Vf x
January 25, 2022 at 22:34 #1579865Yes, they are “groundsmen”; but I believe most are employed only for race days. With full time groundsmen in charge of each team.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 26, 2022 at 09:40 #1579905Thanks for the replies. I’d half-guessed they were employees but the sheer number of jumps/hurdles at some of the courses made me think twice. The fact that some of them are only employed on race days makes more sense.

January 26, 2022 at 10:23 #1579907At Worcester, they’re often Asian lads with Brummie accents – always makes me feel hungry by sound association tbh: I do love a good Brummie Balti House.
But the rest are mostly refugees from Lord Of The Rings as stated by TTC.

January 26, 2022 at 20:29 #1579969Haven’t been Racing for a few years Ian, but at that time Newbury used a group of asian lads too.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 26, 2022 at 20:48 #1579973I thought these men were doggers until I realised they were wearing clothes.
Although it’s still worth checking the the fences for condoms.
January 26, 2022 at 23:06 #1579985Seasider that’s funny, their straight from the channel mate. sure I saw one stood by a fence selling the big issue.
January 26, 2022 at 23:36 #1579989No need for that type of post.

I used to live in an Asian community as a student, great people – great food!
I also got a lift from Leicester to Coventry by a bunch of Asian lads as I hitchhiked back from the races during those uni days.
Ditto – really good people.
Many are from families who have been here generations, but even those who aren’t are people.
And people are people.

January 27, 2022 at 09:51 #1580005A question about who stands next to a fence manages to polarise people and cause controversy.

I’m not exactly a gigantic fan of either stance, tbh.

Why do you assume everyone who posts about illegals crossing the channel is a racist.
My brother in law is a doctor born in Kashmir, lived and worked in this country since he was 17, has 4 beautiful children. He will tell you how much is too much? I join him and his family every 3 years for a holiday in Srinagar and travel around India, beautiful country and people and yes so many different spices and flavours of food.
I remember my first visit stepping out of the airport into 42-degree heat just after midnight, and walking around the Tal Mahal at 47 degrees heat.
Your posts on here follow the same narrative as your clique friends and use the racist word with impunity. - AuthorPosts
