St Leger or Juddmonte International?
I’m afraid both wont be an option.June 10, 2012 at 07:36 #407536I couldn’t understand any racing fan picking the St.Leger over a clash between Camelot and Frankel in the International.
June 10, 2012 at 07:58 #407538The Coral-Eclipse! … but it won’t happen!
June 10, 2012 at 08:38 #407539The St Leger then Champion Stakes, forget York unless its the Great Voltigeur.
What people seem unable to grasp is that when we are dead and buried the first and possibly only triple crown winner of the 21st Century will get greater recognition than 2 unbeaten horses of exceptional ability. This assuming that Camelot, Frankel and Black Caviar fulfil such destinies.
June 10, 2012 at 08:49 #407541I chose the Frankel v Camelot option but, having grown up in an era where the Triple Crown represented horse racing Nirvana, I could understand O’Brien ducking it. (That and the likely fact that his colt would be comprehensively beaten.)

I agree, I’ve been surprised at the number of racing pundits favouring the Leger.
Think the York "clash" would be mouthwatering one to look forward to while the thought of a 1/4 shot going for the Leger even if it is the "Triple Crown" leaves me cold. I think there will be a certain amount of anti-climax after the Leger as well, whatever the result.
June 10, 2012 at 11:48 #407552If it comes down to a straight choice between the Juddmonte and the St.Leger, aside from the romantic title of Triple Crown winner I fail to see how winning the St Leger from a G2/3 horse could enhance Camelot’s reputation.
If runs in the Juddmonte and gets beat quite easily by Frankel, then he was taking on the greatest racehorse ever and will have plenty of other races to show how good he is in relation to other mortal equine flesh.
If he wins, they could retire Camelot there and then and he would regarded as the greatest ever, whether or not he ran in the St.Leger. Even if Camelot were to eyeball Frankel in the last furlong he would be regarded as a great racehorse.
Of course he doesn’t have to take on Frankel in the Juddmonte, but I would like to see him take on his elders like Danedream, Carlton House, Nathaniel, Cirrus Des Aigles, Monterosso, Aiken, Galikova or Golden Lilac, sometime before the St.Leger. He could do that after the St.Leger in the Arc but thats going to be tougher in what is likely to be big field with practically every horse a G1 winner, it also appears to St.Nics ultimate goal this season.
He could hold on until the Champion but again he’ll be likely to run into Frankel and only be getting 3lbs. My guess is that if he takes on the older horses this season it will be in the Irish Champion Stakes. Ballydoyle have plenty of ammo to take to the 12F G1’s, in the Irish Champion there will be 6 or 7 runners, four of them will be trained by AOB.
June 10, 2012 at 11:55 #407554St Leger as I have him in a treble with Black Caviar and Frankel
June 10, 2012 at 14:22 #407567I don’t recall what Nijinsky beat in the Leger. All I know is that he won the Triple Crown. After what happened in NY it is time for another legend.
June 10, 2012 at 15:14 #407583I agree with Andy (for a change) – The Triple Crown will immortalise him.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
June 10, 2012 at 16:34 #407602I agree with Andy (for a change) – The Triple Crown will immortalise him.
Sadly I think you’re right. He would be immortalised because the races he won and not the level of ability he had to have to win those races. Let’s face it; to win the St.Leger will probably require about the same level of ability as winning the Great Voltigeur.
In my eyes, to considered immortal/great whatever you want to call it, he has to be beating at least the likes of Danedream, Nathaniel, Cirrus des Aigles etc. and beating them well.
Taking on Frankel and just giving him a race will give him infinitly more cudos than slamming a March Stakes winner 5 lengths!
June 10, 2012 at 16:51 #407605I’d like to see him take on Frankel at York, with Fame And Glory as a flat-out pacemaker. I know it’s not going to happen that way, but it would be fun.
June 10, 2012 at 17:00 #407606Eclipse, then the York International, then the St Leger and finish with the Prix De l’Arc De Triomphe. That’s a proper old-fashioned campaign.
Typical of a number of poll threads that intiator of the poll puts forward his own preferences without at least giving a choice of neither of the above.

June 10, 2012 at 17:05 #407608Tell Sir Henry about the proper old fashioned campaign.
June 10, 2012 at 17:12 #407612York.

I’ll take this. If I had to choose one I’d pick the Leger because we have got to see one Triple Crown winner this year.
June 10, 2012 at 23:09 #407649As Henry Cecil alluded to in yesterday’s post, there’s no reason why he can’t run in both so the poll is pretty flawed in that respect.
What I’m very mindful of however is that fact that Coolmore owes nothing to either the sport or to us the fans. Whatever they decide is in their best interests is their decision alone.
