The tuesday is the day to go imo.. The roar is cracking when they get underway in the supreme novices. Then you get the arkle and the champion hurdle.
February 14, 2008 at 01:26 #142972I have to agree with Aragorn, the Tuesday is my favourite day of the festival and the first 3 races have generally been good to me from a betting perspective (long may that continue).
If I was pushed for my favourite race though it would have to be the Arkle and I’m on Noland Ante Post at 16s this year and hoping that he can do a repeat of the 2006 SPN when I was rather smug in the stands with a large ante post voucher after he chinned Straw Bear on the line!!
February 14, 2008 at 05:54 #142987You know you don’t have to ask me

K v D v ED aside
I am looking forward to the Triumph and World Hurdles.
Binocular is going to have to win just as easily tomorrow as he did at Ascot. If he runs that is.
If it turns out well and I am sure it will I think the horse will take all the beating. For me he’s a superstar in waiting but only time will tell. He’s going to have to be to beat Franchoek and the mind boggles what the future will hold for the winner………hopefully one of them will emerge as a real contender for the Champion Hurdle.
I don’t much care what Jonjo decides to do on Saturday, runs doesn’t run wins doesn’t win 2m3f is not his trip. I trust Jonjo he will do what he thinks is best for the horse.
That aside hopefully he will be stronger and better this year and hopefully not drop himself out the race and throw his chance away.
If he can keep tabs on Inglis Drever he won’t be beaten IMO AP thinks he’s as tough a horse as he has ever sat on and that’s good enough for me.
Hopefully it will be a classic with two very good horses fighting it out in what should be a great race.

deffo agree with you last year had 2 winners and some very nice e/w bets the year before had 4 on the Tuesday hopefully same again this year although as it’s my 1st time going to Gold Cup would love some luck that day………
February 14, 2008 at 10:36 #143040Could you leave your costume at home Bruce don’t want you scaring any the horses I’ve bet
February 14, 2008 at 18:25 #143211The Four-miler, cross country chase and Foxhunters are my three favourite races of the Festival.
Somewhat inevitably.

Agree with you about those race.
Im a huge fan of the cross country and its a pity that some other racecourses dont build more, Would love to see a cross country in the middle of Bangor or Carlisle.
February 14, 2008 at 19:31 #143226Neil,
I guess the outlay – both in terms of the initial build and then the upkeep / watering – has put off more courses from doing so.
I’m not sure Bangor’s infield is big enough, especially now another circuit’s worth of it has been given over to the point-to-point course that replaced Eaton Hall from 2006, but Carlisle is good call – it would certainly constitute as much of a test as Cheltenham with all those undulations.
There were one or two point-to-point venues (Didmarton may have been one) that attempted to put on cross-country or natural country races up until around 15-20 years ago, though they were really pale imitations of the Cheltenham or Punchestown equivalents and were generally dismissed as "awful" by Mackenzie and Selby.

In my opinion there is no place for cross-country chasing within organised National Hunt racing. I still feel it is a sick joke that Cheltenham puts one on at the Festival.
My favourite race is the Pertemps final handicap hurdle. I remember when it used to be the Coral Golden Hurdle final and I love figuring out which jobber has the most in hand after going bent for most of the season!
There is only one Welsh Wizard, all other Welsh Wizard’s are cheap imitiations!!!!

What a shame, Nick – I’m doing the Ystradowen and Laleston points in your neck of the woods later this season, and was going to invite you to pop round the courses my specially-enlisted team of munchkins are currently in the process of building in the infields of both. They’ve got haybales and dry stone walls and water splashes and everything!

I’m also working on a Rules equivalent for the infield at Cartmel, just as soon as I work out how you can get half a ton of horse up and down an Astroglide…

February 14, 2008 at 20:10 #143245a-ha but I am no longer residing in that neck of the woods jg – strictly in the Welsh border area now (Whitwick on Saturday is about 2 miles away).
I am with you on the 4-miler though – thank God they did no more than tinker with the conditions, I thought there was a real threat that they might do away with the race altogether (as a sop to what colin calls the tree-huggers) after last year’s fatalities. My wish this year is that someone other than Nicholls/Pipe/O’Neill/Hobbs/King wins it. In fact I’d love it if a permit holder won – ridden by a jockey in “jumper” colours.

How can you get excited about a sound?

Noland getting up is still my best winner ever… Could not believe it….

Ooooh! Enjoy if you’re going. Whitwick usually manages the biggest total of runners of any point meeting on the calendar.

Agreed. It’s had a narrow escape.

I would have suggested Shelomoh of Don Forster’s permit operation, but I don’t think he’s qualified (do the new rules demand a prior novices’ chase win?). He looked another dour stayer in hurdles for Forster last season. Come to think of it, I think Don uses silks rather than jerseys as well. Pah.

February 14, 2008 at 21:14 #143272How can anyone not like cross country steeplchases.
Look at the french races which can be found on YouTube and you get some very good and exciting racing.
Nearest thing the p2p have is the Members race at the High Peak at Flagg on Easter Tuesday with racing over the stone walls.
February 14, 2008 at 21:21 #143274Say it again, brother. Excellent fare on there.
