January 29, 2017 at 14:28 #1284523Great to see him Nathan, cracking photos. I’ll try and get some on Gold Cup day when I’m
there and post them up tooJanuary 29, 2017 at 16:44 #1284563Great pics, Nathan and great to meet you at last, although I felt I was meeting an old friend. Your boy, as well. Does the heart good to see the youngsters who’ll take over from oldies like me and hopefully be going to Cheltenham for decades to come.
I just got home so will watch all the racing again and then go through my pictures to see what I got.
The swelling of the noise as Many Clouds and Thistlecrack battled up the run-in was something I haven’t experienced on the ground at that level of intensity. Days out at festivals past I was always up in the stands and the noise was always kind of echo-like and contained, but I almost stopped concentrating on the wonderful finish just to listen to the wave of noise as it washed down out of the stands and seemed to be almost physically moving toward the two horses as they neared the post. It felt like the crescendo would never be reached and I’ll never forget it and will never forget Many Clouds – it was as if he’d heard about Thistlecrack’s reputation and had decided he simply was not going to allow himself to be beaten. The epitome of a staying steeplechaser of the deepest courage and class. A privilege to be there and as someone said yesterday, for a horse like Many Clouds to meet its end, there are many, many worse places than at Cheltenham in front of true lovers of horses and racing.

My Son isn’t the most fanatical of sports lovers but he loved the shops around Cheltenham and does enjoy staying overnight in different B@b’s/hotels( ). He’s already told me we are going next year and staying in the hotel by the train station that way “we can get the horses out of the way and then go shopping on the Sunday after his legs have recovered from walking to the course up that bloody hill”

January 29, 2017 at 23:33 #1284686Fantastic pictures Nathan and Joe really capturing the spirit of the meeting.
Thistlecrack pics particularly good and one of Ruby in black and white.Great you two got to meet up and that Alex wants to go back again
To have been there to witness Many Clouds lower the colours of Thistlecrack in that manner must have been bittersweet but what a way to go out and you were there for his final bow. Still haven’t got over it but that race will be talked about forever what a warrior.
Looking forward to seeing Grahams Gold Cup pics later in the year what a day that will be, lucky you Graham..can you get to stand behind Matt Chapman and give us a wave. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 29, 2017 at 23:41 #1284691I think Alex knows more than he lets on about horse racing
When Tom Scudamore jumped on Thistlecrack Alex said “is Canford Cliffs running..?”Blackbeard to conquer the World

Nathan,
Where did you stay this time? I ask because my old student house (298 Gloucester Road) is now the Central Studious budget apartments.
January 30, 2017 at 10:16 #1284728We didn’t stay, caught an early train and came back after the Cotswold Chase.
It was a bit rushed which is why we are thinking of making more of it next timeBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 30, 2017 at 10:37 #1284729Nathan, Alex will be soaking it in and will look back with great fondness, I’m sure. My own two boys, I’m sorry to say, never took to the sport. Maybe I ‘over-encouraged’ them as kids – a bad approach with rebellious youth!
My bet is that Alex will become a top racing photographer.
