I go to see the horses close up in the pre-parade, parade ring, I take photographs and draw sometimes. Funny no one has ever commented on me drawing at the pre-parade ring.
I have been going on and off since I was a little girl, I love the atmosphere. I rarely bet, but I do follow the form.It always astonishes me that people bet without ever having a look at the horses in the paddock or going down, there are so many clues in how the horses look and behave, not only for the race but how they might progress for the future.
February 15, 2015 at 12:03 #751001Back up along the bookies searching for the best price and placing an actual cash bet with an on course bookie…Amazes me these days how many just place bets on their phones, i-pads etc….certainly takes one of the most fun aspects of the races out of it for me..
Don’t think it would be much fun going up and down the line of 4 bookmakers indoors at Chelmsford including Betfred, Ladbrokes and Hills.
£17 entry as well apart from the premier days when £20 plus.
Come racing get the value

Should be come racing to get ripped off by Fred Done, the guy’s bad for punters, bad for racing.
I wouldn’t pay a penny to go to the place.
February 15, 2015 at 20:31 #751069Took advantage of the free tickets at Ascot yesterday (Saturday). Went with my two children (daughter of 7 – first timer, son of 5- been twice before). Wife was ill with the flu unfortunately so I had my hands full!
Beforehand my daughter stated that she didn’t want to go to "smelly boring horsees!" while son was excited. Driving down the Winkfield Road (parallel to the old mile straight) I said look out the window you can see the jumps and which drew a "Wow" from said daughter.
Another wow followed when she saw the size of the stands. Best of all was when we did the pre-parade and then parade ring and they got to see close up the size of the horses. After that she wanted to go to the parade ring for most of the races.
She even had a go with my binoculars (25+ years old and very heavy!) while the races were on (we found a spot in the seats opposite the final fence) and didn’t mind the wind and rain. Now she can’t wait to go again.
As for my son, he got bored and wants me take him to a football match next time! Maybe try again when he’s a bit older.
Obviously ensuring that two under 8’s don’t get lost in the crowds meant that betting took a back seat – probably not a bad thing for me.
