Tomorrow I’m travelling to Newcastle for my first meeting in over 20 years. In fact, my last visit to a racecourse was to witness See You Then win his third Champion Hurdle.
I’m not expecting a ‘Cheltenham’ experience (obviously) but I’m now starting to get nervous about going.
So a few questions for you all:
I assume there’s no problem with me using my PDA to bet with Betfair on-course?
Is the food likely to be edible, or am I just a fantasist? (I’m in the Premier Enclosure but don’t fancy the carvery at £99, though I’m sure it’s Michelin quality!)
Will I be thoroughly underwhelmed by it all ? (my biggest fear)
Last time I went racing I had binoculars, I don’t now. Is it worth purchaing a cheap pair before tomorrow?
Many Thanks.
February 22, 2008 at 10:25 #145446You will need binoculars because the grand stand is set well back from the course. When I was last there I needed them to see the pictures on the big screen, which although opposite the stands was a long way away.
There were plenty of catering outlets but fare was fairly basic. As a southerner I was amazed by the luridness of the phosphorescent green of the "mushy", a substance which people appeared to be eating voluntarily.
February 22, 2008 at 10:40 #145450£99 for the carvery sounds like the biggest rip off ever for racecourse food! Take your own lunch and eat in the car.
The course is big and spacious but lacks atmosphere. If you like to watch races live then, yes take bins but there are a lot of screens around the stands to watch the distant action.
Using your PDA to access Betfair will not be a problem and very sensible thing to do.
February 22, 2008 at 11:17 #145460not sure about taking your own food, for me, trying the chips and curry sauce/peas, veg/curry/chilli and rice in a bowl, burgers, pasties and teas from the greasy looking vans or kiosks is part of the day out
as a world class drinker i have to say i don’t drink at the races
parade ring must be visited each race imo
February 22, 2008 at 11:47 #145465Thanks for all the tips folks.
Just a quick edit. The carvery is only £50, it’s the actual ‘Grande Buffet" that is being offered at £100+…..plus VAT!
I may dine elsewhere.
February 22, 2008 at 12:20 #145475Kwai, it has been three years since I was there, and it was a very gloomy day weatherwise. I am glad to hear a better class of big screen is in use there now – I must try and go again.
I went the day Harchibald won the Fighting Fifth so impressively. At least I could see that.
February 24, 2008 at 22:23 #6850Great day out with a couple of winners and some close calls-Including one owned by those Golden Anorak chappies[2 mile 2 furlong next time?]
Also watched the race from Fontwell that The Pipe horse Lough Derg won in fantastic style.I was stood next to Martin Pipe in the newly named Martin Pipe bar.He was happy to pose for a piccy with me in exchange for a kiss or three-The old devil Didn’t come out too well, never mind-great day and Martin is a lovely man who should be knighted, never mind naming a bar after him,IMO.
