Adrian,
Half the grandstand will be asleep by the time they have completed 2 miles!!!
As you know, 12f is considered a marathon race by many.

Most pleasing of all to report, the now 15-year-old grey went in again at Pompadour this Sunday just gone, having got outpaced turning for home:

I’m indebted to Peter Stevens, that noted cross-country enthusiast and author of the definitive history of the National Hunt Chase (as well as a native now of France) for posting the above link on another forum. A joy of a race to watch, in what looks a pretty nice country setting.

September 4, 2012 at 21:39 #412051Thank you for relaying the clip. I really enjoyed that.
To give an updated answer the original question, the 16 year old Marked Man ran at Worcester in July. There could be older horses running either in points or on the continent but Richard Lee’s Marked Man would be the oldest to have ran under rules this year.
September 4, 2012 at 22:19 #412052Loved that! The going looked a bit on the hard side though. Jockeys must need a good memory with all that twisting and turning. Thanks for that.
September 4, 2012 at 23:06 #412056Dvinsky has had 215 races now, he’s 11 years old.
That’s some going.
September 6, 2012 at 19:40 #412219All fair play to owners who are willing to pay the training fees for 13,14,15, even 16 y-olds who still really enjoy their outings on the course, win or lose. If it makes the old boys happy, why not if you can afford it?
What always amazes me at local horse/agricultural shows is that their "Veterans" showing class is still for 15-y-o upwards. 15 is nothing nowadays, with better care, and of course they always look fantastic up against a horse in his 20s, and win the class. Not fair to compare the two, when 18/19/20 y-olds can still compete in eventing and dressage at international level! They need to raise the age level to make it more of a real show of true veterans.
I knew of a 35-y-o T/B which was still rideable and capable of putting someone on the deck ocasionally! And will not easily forget the 25-y-o I rode (in the days when you could take a horse out without supervision). I was told "Take it easy. He’s very old". As soon as his feet touched turf he did a sideways buck, spun round, dropped his shoulder, and dumped me in the ditch!
