HJ
I recall a similar thing happening when I was at Nottingham, (NH), a few years ago.
I can’t, for the life of me, recall the name, but it was a 16yo grey which won its race, then sadly collapsed and died in the unsaddling enclosure.
May 22, 2006 at 14:36 #72346There’s a seller at Musselburgh tonight that is a veterans race. In the 8.00 12-y-o’s Rudi’s Pet and Further Outlook will attempt to hold-off the challenge from the much more sprightly 11-y-o’s Atlantic Viking. They aren’t past it yet though, all 3 holding a relaistic chance at the weights and occupying the front 3 in the RP betting forecast.

May 22, 2006 at 14:56 #72347Wonder if Diamond Racing will claim either of the Nicholls pair?
May 22, 2006 at 15:00 #72348Would be funny seeing as they already own Further Outlook!!
May 22, 2006 at 15:03 #72349Not the oldest, but Mac Vidi was placed in the 1980 Gold Cup at 16 and was placed in another decent race the following year.
Flockton Grey was the oldest 2yo that I remember.

Oldest 2yo I can remember was Endless Summer.
May 22, 2006 at 15:36 #72351Pretty sure that Flocton Grey was ‘older’!;)
May 22, 2006 at 16:18 #72352Tyndarius, Southerncrosspatch and Jumbos Dream all aged 15 have run over hurdles and fences in 2006. On the flat Jamacian Flight and Lord Chamberlain are still racing in 2006 aged 13.
May 22, 2006 at 16:42 #72353You got me there DJ, that the ringer who ran at Haydock? Was a 4yo apparently.
May 22, 2006 at 17:00 #72354I think it was at Leicester in March 1982. The horse that actually ran I think was called Good Hand, a 3-y-o old at the time.

Lovely horse called Eastern Destiny, Reet Hard, and he was actually 17.
May 22, 2006 at 18:03 #72356Bit more info on the redoubtable Sonny Somers, from the RP:
Few victories in his long and brilliant careers as a jump jockey and trainer can have delighted Fred Winter more than two he achieved in minor three-mile handicap chases in the winter of 1980. Those were the two successes recorded by the thoroughly admirable and much-loved 18-year-old black gelding Sonny Somers, whose feats enabled him to equal the record for the oldest horse to win a race in Britain. Winter’s efforts in keeping him sound and enthusiastic at an age far beyond the normal span of a racehorse were widely recognised and justifiably praised, and few Gold Cup winners can have been accorded the reception Sonny Somers received after his wins at Southwell and Lingfield.
May 22, 2006 at 18:14 #72357By the way, Pam Neal’s doughty campaigner Mac Vidi was 15 when he was placed in the Gold Cup and had improved out of all recognition that season (he’d looked fairly useful as a young horse but had unsurprisingly seemed to be on the downgrade), winning 7 handicaps which is surely unique for a horse in his teens.

Thanks for that Rory, as you say a lovely horse which won many races over its long career.
May 22, 2006 at 21:13 #72360Appropriately enough the Cartmel Grand Veterans National is run this coming saturday. A healthy number of entries including teenagers Sir Frosty (last years winner), King On The Run and Bright Approach (doubt he’ll have his ground).
Always an enjoyable event.
May 23, 2006 at 05:19 #72361I suspect that’ll be on ATR. Should be interesting to watch as long as they all get round OK.
