There are many songs relating to horse racing.
This is my favourite
It is by The Band titled Cripple Creek.the song contains these lines.
Good Luck had just stung me
So to the racetrack I did goShe bet on the 1 horse to win
and I bet on another to showThe odds were in my favour
I had ’em five to oneWhen that nag to win came around the track
Sure enough she had wonI took up all my winnings and gave mt Bessie half
And she tore it up and threw it in my face
just for a laugh.
(have a look on u tube type in cripple creek)Van Morrison mentions Lester Piggot in one of his songs.
The waterboys have a few songs connected with horse racing.
There are even a few Chinese songs solely about horse racing. What are your favourite ones?[/i]

April 3, 2008 at 11:32 #155384With my almost MOR hat on, this is ‘Another Horsedreamer’s Blues’ by Counting Crows…
Margery’s dreaming of the middle of the day
Tiyuri to win, Perfect Dozen to place
Money is the matter that’s been on her mind
Time ticks by her one race at a timeShe’s tryin’ to be a good girl
And give ’em what they want
But Margery’s dreaming of horsesLookin’ at a green sky
Sun like a red eye
Bright blue horses are the fortune she lives by
She’s tired and lonely
Scared and depressed
Her visions of one day go racing the nextShe’s trying to be a good girl
And give ’em what they want
But Margery’s dreaming of horsesMargie doesn’t say anything all the way home
So afraid she’ll awake to find she’s all aloneMargery’s wingspan’s all feathers and coke cans, and
TV dinners and letters she won’t send, and
Every race night is shot through with sunlight
Trying to hit the big one one last time tonight for
Drunken fathers and stupid mothers and
Boys who can’t tell one girl from anotherSo she takes her pills
Careful and round
One of these days
She’s gonna throw the whole bottle downBut she’s trying to be a good girl
And give ’em what they want
But Margery’s dreaming of…
Trying to be a good girl
And give ’em what they want
But Margery’s dreaming of horses[/color:1d82euyd]April 3, 2008 at 12:00 #155392"Kauto Star vs. Denman"

“Best Mate…Best Mate…Best Mate…”
“Best Mate…Best Mate…Best Mate…”*sigh*
A modern classic.
April 3, 2008 at 12:23 #155398Going into Anorak mode for a moment. I actually wrote a song when I was about 10 or 11 I think based on the "They’re Off!" game
The chorus if I remember was
Jimmy O’Goblin, Jimmy O’Goblin
Coming with a peach of a run
Jimmy O’Goblin, Jimmy O’Goblin
the danger horse is Page SonI’ll get my coat

Sad thing is I remember the game as well. I never worked out how the commentator could see the grin on Ginger Campbell’s face when he was looking over his shoulder. I think Ginger rode Geordie Lad.
