Chezza would be a FOINAVON, however in his mind he thinks of himself as a SUNNYHILLBOY and Nathan is NEPTUNE COLLONGES who snatches the race right on line

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.

January 24, 2023 at 23:33 #1632072‘Triptych Triptych’
She was my hero Nathan absolutely loved her for her toughness and consistency.
Imagine today for example Enable racing at 6 years of age, running 41 times in her career, winning 18 races of which 9 were Group 1 including the Champion Stakes and being the first filly to win the Irish 2000 Guineas.Sadly she made the front page of the Racing Post when she tragically died in a freak accident in Kentucky whilst in foal to Mr. Prospector The saddest day ever for myself and the racing world.
She was gone and there would be no progeny to carry on her magnificent legacy
I just wanted to keep her name alive and what better way than here on TRF, sentimental but I feel she’s with me every day. Jac

January 25, 2023 at 00:10 #1632076That’s so nice Nathan
I do have her determination to win but it doesn’t always go my way.She was a wonderful racehorse I wish I’d have been going to Newmarket more often and been there for her Dubai Champion Stakes win but I watched it on tv.
I think Enable is the closest any mare has come to being her equal but to my knowledge no filly has won the Irish 2000 Guineas since Triptych…big horseshoes to follow in.

… erm..poem ?
Ok iambic pentameter it may fail to find, but it makes up brownies in buckets for the prescient presence of earnest – good ol’ Ernie the fastest bloody milkman in a vest – so this was a hybrid and not technically blank verse, but with it’s four gallant horsemen of metrical feet rather than five – and despite a slight lack of technical Wordsworth, I will covertly sneak in and steal a Diane dress, banishing any feelings of seconditis, and turn, to the audience’s delight, into a stable lass for a day – thank you Matthew – who with her big …erm feet, fag, and whisky remarks…” I’ll give it foive.”

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 25, 2023 at 14:36 #1632123Chezza backed Triptych at 16/1 the morning of the Oaks because Chezza knew it was going to bucket it down and Chezza had already realised she was best with give.
She ran a blinder but Oh So Sharp was in a zone of her own that day – it was the only year Chezza attended all five Classics.
Did Chezza feel privileged to see her win the fillies Triple Crown?
No, Chezza hated the bitch – Chezza had 20/1 Al Bahathri in the 1,000 Guineas as well and she cost Chezza plenty that day too.
Triptych did pleasingly oblige in a Champion Stakes when Chezza had something daft like 7/1 about her in a poor renewal after she’d been third in the Arc.
Very reliable female – the horse, not the human.
The human’s just an annoyingly good Flat racing judge and Chezza really needs to start taking more notice of her.

I don’t really rate myself that good a judge so proceed with caution. I do however get my best results when I’m at the races and see the horses in the flesh so any bets following visits to Newmarket are probably worth following through.
Triptych was a feisty mare and you knew when she hit the front she was not for catching but that 1000 Guineas was one of the greats and Al Bahathri so unlucky for you Chezza but 20/1 paid more for a place than the winner.
Remember Lord Oaksey calling Bella Colora the winner on tv and having to apologise. Oh So Sharp and Steve Cauthen stole the day a magnificent run to take the race from 3 lengths off the pace.
My money went down with Triptych too but I forgave her and she got it all back for me later.

Sadly, Chezza only bets win only.
Seeing as Nijinsky in 1970 was the last colt to win the Triple Crown and Chezza was there at Doncaster when Camelot failed to emulate him, Chezza does actually regret not appreciate seeing Oh So Sharp win the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger in the flesh.
As for Triptych, she was a cracking filly, maybe not quite in the very good or great category, but a genuine and consistent Group 1 performer and, when she had a winning chance, she took it.
I can still see her chasing home Oh So Sharp in the murk at Epsom while I stood in the Stands in my mind’s eye – 38 years ago this June.

My favourite performance by her was her second Coronation Cup, under a wonderful ride from Steve Cauthen:
January 25, 2023 at 20:34 #1632181What a great ride from Steve Cauthen that was.
Triptych never looked happy on the quickish ground, so he never more than niggled at her to stay in touch, he nursed her round the rest of the time and then, incredibly, once she came back on the bridle, he ultimately bided his time so he didn’t hit the front too soon.
Pat Eddery was the most naturally-gifted rider of a horse you’ll ever see, but time and time again Cauthen had the last laugh over him – and over all of them.

Thank you for that marvellous clip
What a great race she ran in that Coronation Cup with her high head carriage and that look of determination, she was magnificent in what proved to be her last Group 1 win.
She had given her all and it was soon after that they decided she should retire and return to America, the rest is sad history.
I don’t think we will ever see one like her again.
Ian..
Really envy your memory of being there at Epsom seeing herself and Oh So Sharp.Ground..
Stevie Cauthan really knew how to judge a race. Never forget his rides on Slip
Anchor and Reference Point in the Derby.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 26, 2023 at 06:37 #1632219Slip Anchor was my first Derby I attended, I had backed him at 20/1 ante-post and it was the most amazing race Is ever since at that point.
It was still a Wednesday Derby, the Doend were packed so, coming down Tattenham Hill and with no big screen, the crowd in the Stands only got fleeting glimpses of the horses as they flickered between tents, open top buses etc, and no one realised how far clear Slip Anchor was pulling clear.
When he came fully into view rounding Tattenham Corner, having gone about 15 lengths clear, it was fully three seconds (that felt like an eternity) until the chasing pack appeared, there was then a second or two of sheer stunned silence when you could hear a pin drop before the most almighty roar as the crowd realised the favourite had an unassailable lead fully three furlongs out.
The rest of the race was a cheering, standing ovation, celebration.
