Have to admit he’s not one of my favourites, but certainly an achievement riding his 2000th winner yesterday.
Deserves a thread and well done to him.
December 17, 2009 at 11:50 #264216A great achievement, perhaps being overshadowed by being a contemporary of McCoy.
Unlucky to be around the same time as McCoy otherwise he would probably have been a multiple champion rider.
Full marks to him though and he has matured into a good rider.
December 17, 2009 at 21:45 #264293Richard Johnson is unfortunate indeed to have been around at the time of AP McCoy and, to a lesser extent, Ruby Walsh (don’t mean Ruby is in any way inferior to AP, just that he’s cast less of a numerical shadow over the rest of the UK jockeys).
Johnson is extremely capable. He may not have the sheer grit of McCoy or the style of Walsh but he’s a top rate jockey and I was delighted to see him reach the 2,000 mark.

December 19, 2009 at 01:11 #264454You’re not wrong there,boss.
I remember having a decent bet on him on Lincoln Place a few years ago.He had the race at his mercy but managed to fall at the last.
Poor guy broke his leg.
Every cloud…

Cormack hits the nail. Johnson never the most "popular" pilot but more than capable. u do NOT get 2000 winners being a donkey.
December 21, 2009 at 13:50 #264776One line I’ve heard getting trotted out periodically is that Richard Johnson isn’t quite as fearless at attacking the final obstacle in a race, under pressure or otherwise, as he used to be.
There’s a grain of truth in that, and a couple of late yahoos observed at close order when I used to go to Uttoxeter more frequently are still etched in the mind. However, there was nothing at all wrong with how he just fired Quattrocento at the last at Ffos Las a few minutes ago, as I’m sure the Forumite who owns the gelding will agree. Well played, all concerned!

December 21, 2009 at 14:46 #264788Thanks for that GC. He rode a great race again as he did on Quattro last week. Much more to come. Interesting for me ,as I think I posted once before,Richard has now won 20 for me and AP none, although a while ago they both had about the same number of rides. I love Richard
