Well done to the BHA and Aintree. Pretty much flawless yesterday. Not too far off a fifth of a million people fed and watered and the race was safe. Much hard graft gone into that, kudos to all concerned.
Terrific coverage for Racing in the papers this morning, the broadsheets in particular. Some great shots of the horses and riders, promoting our sport.
The all weather public horses continued their layer skinning – “its like finding it on the streets” bellowed the Wolver faithful.
The McManus gang did the real work at Chepstow, the thing even placed last time out.
Prix Du Jockey Club trial in France today, we’ve already had Bracelet, The Craven beckons……

Methinks Cav the AW part is their achilles heel ,,,but yes apart from a potentially nasty accident at the start all went well , kudos are well deserved …much credit to all
Interesting to see if they create more fixtures for the baldy one , or tinker about with the massive list as it stands ….
One week to go and counting for the Craven ….

imo
April 6, 2014 at 10:37 #474770Some decent flat racing this week even before the Craven. I’m off to Pontefract on Tuesday, which has a potentially informative 10F maiden and two good class handicaps, then Nottingham for the Further Flight on Wednesday, where I’m meeting up with our old friend Maxilon5.
Then the Greenham meeting next weekend ….
April 6, 2014 at 11:42 #474786So much quality midweek racing to look forward to over the next few months! Give my regards to maxilon, AP and tell him his Southwell musings are much missed on the forum. What a talented writer.
April 6, 2014 at 12:34 #474792Yes AP, say hello to Maxilon and tell him we all miss him on TRF!
April 6, 2014 at 12:36 #474793Yep agree and tell him the Somerset boys will be in full force at Trent Bridge.

April 6, 2014 at 12:58 #474796Good to know that Maxilon5 is still treading the turf and fibresand; a formidible TRF debater and good egg
Just had a glance through the Nottingham card and have come across

April 6, 2014 at 14:32 #474818Good to hear that Max is ok; perhaps we’ll see him at Southwell one day.
April 6, 2014 at 14:48 #474822As per other members please pass on regards to Max. I hope you find him well
April 7, 2014 at 09:19 #474883I mentioned your posts to max via an email and he replied:
Can you pass on my regards to those posters and wish them all the best with the coming flat season.
April 7, 2014 at 10:15 #474889You will have to give us the lowdown on Mighty Yar, AP.

April 7, 2014 at 12:47 #474906Will do Nathan – I’m also looking forward to seeing the return of Flying Officer, a full brother to Lucarno, so this trip should be no problem for him.
He was entered for the July Sales at Newmarket last year and I was encouraging a couple of NH trainers to go after him, but he was withdrawn after his win at Windsor. He’s another that has the Yorkshire Cup entry.
April 9, 2014 at 20:52 #475103Mighty Yar certainly impressed me in the preliminaries. He’s a tall, lengthy type, a good walker and he looked pretty fit for this seasonal debut.
Then going down to post, he showed a really long fluent stride, covering a great deal of ground with little apparent effort – the best mover I’ve seen on course since Frankel, but bear in mind I don’t go racing that much these days, so haven’t seen thousands of horses in between.
But his action is also low to the ground, a sweeping action of the sort best suited to faster ground than he faced today. Conditions at Nottingham were dead and sticky and the much more rounded action and shorter stride length of Flying Officer was seen to good effect.
Given that the handicapper is unlikely to react to this run, Mighty Yar could go back into handicaps from a tasty looking mark of 88. There is a valuable 14F race at Newmarket in mid May and given better ground, that track would be sure to suit. Longer term if his mark rose to around 95, he would be of great interest in the Ebor.
One last thought – even as a 4-y-old, he still looks as if he could get stronger and fill his frame. I watched him parade in company with Ken Pittterson and we both felt that it might be another year before we see the best of him, simply because of his size. So handicaps this year and then move up to Listed/Group company next year might be the best approach with him.
April 10, 2014 at 09:12 #475115Thanks for that AP, I’ve just watched the replay and what you wrote makes sense, I was thinking watching it that he’s a big baby so you saying about improvement/best at 5 I would conclude the same. I think he was keen enough yesterday in the early stages aswell which would of blunted his finish a wee bit.

April 10, 2014 at 10:32 #475121Darn it; got back from shopping yesterday to find a message on my answerphone form the S.O. saying ‘it’s a great card at Nottingham today..lets go’. Was too late by then and wanted to go to the cinema anyway [the film turned out to be rubbish]. Sir Henry used to start of some very good horses at Nottingham so we’d resolved to go there early in the season. Must remember to go next year.
