I think sprinter sacre will win, because he looks more the natural chaser to me, whereas I think peddlers is a hurdler they are trying to make a chaser, which I don’t understand when he’s done nothing wrong over hurdles and would have surely progressed in that sphere. However we may well learn tomorrow that donald mccain had the right idea all along.
certainly as we say today the very short run in after the last fence won’t give peddlers cross much chance to "outstay" sprinter sacre. he’ll have to keep tabs with him and be at the very worst a couple of lengths down going into the straight, something I believe will prove difficult to achieve.
having said that if sprinter sacre is behind going into the straight its very difficult to see him winning, whereas you reverse that scenario and you could very well see peddlers cross cutting into the deficit.
December 27, 2011 at 09:14 #384344I think whoever takes the initiative wins. Would like to see Geraghty go on and try and take Peddlers out of his comfort zone. Although he has shown a tendancy to jump right the favourite has never raced right-handed.
December 27, 2011 at 13:41 #384382Well according to Lawrence whoever the hell he is Peddlers’ Corss 2nd in the Champion Hurdle is the speed horse.
We’ll see how fast he is when Barry throws caution to the wind and says let’s go buddy.
I reckon the nearest Peddler’s Cross will get to him is when they walk into the winners enclosure.
I make no excuse for Sprinter Sacre if he doesn’t win this he won’t win the Arkle and the same goes for Peddler’s Cross.
On reflection while it may have been better had all 6 turned up I can’t see this being a tactical affair with anyone having trouble holding up their mounts. Everything should fall into place automatically.
There’s so much confidence behind Sprinter Sacre I doubt if Barry will do anything other than completely ignore what the other two are doing and just let his mount do his own thing and treat them with total contempt.
Something will give and this will be over turning for home.
Peddler’s Cross will no doubt be coming from behind as it would be possible suicide to try and match Sprinter Sacre fence to fence.
He’s most likely to try and move alongside and take over before or after the first fence in the straight. Within strides I reckon the writing will be on the wall and either Peddler’s Cross will come there pulling a train or he will come under immediate pressure and Sprinter Sacre will simply run away from him.
One of these horses is going to prove to be the best by quite some way IMO and that horse I think will be Sprinter Sacre
May the best horse win.
No ambiguity there then!

Trying to prove a point to certain people?

If he isn’t happy with that post he’ll never be happy

I did also say earlier he’s the best Novice Chaser I have seen in living memory and he went a long way to proving me right today.
Still a bit novicy at times but is he a horse or is he a horse?

Exactly how it panned out. The winner, whom I included in my "ten to follow" is a very good horse and reminds me very much of the great Pendil. He too is a big horse and he jumped suberbly all the way round. Very impressed – although I did think beforehand that he might just need the extra race – hence why I took the fitter Peddler’s Cross just to edge it today.

December 27, 2011 at 14:26 #384402Sprinter Sacre isn’t half quick over his fences, he is such a good jumper, so fluent, apart from the last fence today which he got in a bit close to, his jumping was superb.
Peddlers Cross’s quick and low jump 3 from home, i thought was going to bring him back into the race, but Geraghty just seemed to give Sprinter Sacre a couple more inches of rein, and away he went again, and soon put the race to bed.
A very, very good performance, backing up a great display at Doncaster recently.
Really good performance, and excellent jumping from what is a novice.
December 27, 2011 at 14:27 #384403thats a machine
December 27, 2011 at 14:35 #384404Sprinter Sacre looks at this stage the best novice chaser Nicky Henderson has had since Remittance Man.
December 27, 2011 at 17:12 #384439a lot of people seem to be implying that peddlers cross didn’t run to form, but i’m not so sure.
nick mordin is his column, made the point after peddlers cross last run at bangor that peddlers cross needs a long break in between his races, because he puts so much into them.
he tends to be the opposite type of horse to the one who just does enough, and predicted that if he ran again soon after that bangor run he would get beat and would drift out for the arkle, and would then be a good bet for the cheltenham race. so you could argue he bounced.
he was probably right about that but looking at the race today he was dwarfed by the henderson horse, who simply took lengths out at him at every fence, and for a big gangly horse showed a huge amount of accelaration in the home straight to back up his exhiliarting jumping. it could well be that mccain has simply made a mistake with peddlers cross and that he should have been kept to hurdles, as his career was progressing nicely in that sphere.
December 27, 2011 at 18:09 #384455Peddlar’s Cross was totally outclassed and never bounced an inch. He had nothing more than 2 Schooling session up until today and was relaxed as relaxed could be in both his runs.
Very often you can make genuine excuses for horses but as I said before the race more than once Peddlars Cross lost the Champion Hurdle because he lacked the toe to make a fight of it. Why people think because he’s moved to fences he’s all of a sudden going to find a gear he couldn’t find over hurdles is beyond me.
Looking back at his races the way Sprinter Sacre travels was taking top novices off their feet was a clear sign he might just do the same to Peddler’s Cross with that extra year on his back and that’s exactly what happened.
There was plenty evidence that Sprinter Sacre also possessed a turn of foot that Peddler’s lacks and the fact is the only reason he was fav was because he finished 2nd in the Champion Hurdle the rest of his form was along long way off top class as I said yesterday before the race.
Absolutely everything was in Sprinter Sacre’s favour today. The track, the exceptionally high cruising he showed in the Supreme was there for all to see, He had set the world on fire with his jumping at Doncaster and clearly looked to be Peddler’s superior in that division plus he had showed he doesn’t have Harchibald decease in his ealy races last season.
If anyone wants to try and make excuses for a beating that could have been by a distance I’d simply laugh at them if I were you.
The jockey said he got a fright at the first which was a somewhat feeble excuse but he did go on to advise they move up in trip because he knows taking on SS in the Arkle would be a complete waste of time.

Not for the first time, Nick Mordin is barking up entirely the wrong tree.
Peddlers Cross simply needs further than 2m, as connections have conceded today, and some of us were pointing out before the Champion Hurdle.December 27, 2011 at 19:16 #384471Wow. Really impressed. Had SS in a double with Finians Rainbow and that was one of the best days racing I’ve had, especially since my dad picked the Welsh National winner.
SS looks like he could be a future champion, went short, went long, but the crucial thing for me was the way he took lengths out of PC at almost every fence. Was doing handstands at the end. That’s the Arkle winner for me, I know he may not be everyone’s taste but I can’t see anything else impressing me as much
December 27, 2011 at 19:39 #384477agreed. he reminds me mostly of aertyuiop, more than any other horse, both real powerhouses, a great big bull of a chaser.
December 27, 2011 at 19:51 #384483Well done to all those that backed Sprinter Sacre, he was definitely the best horse on the day.
I lost £7 and now have no money for New Year.
It’s a harsh world but I shall learn my lessons with your tutelage.

December 27, 2011 at 20:08 #384488SS was impressive but got in close at a couple – I dont think peddlars cross was given a hard race once the game was up though.
How much will SS find coming up the hill at chelt if off the bridle is another story though. We shall see

I think once Sprinter Sacre quickened after the 3rd last, despite Peddlers Cross jumping it low, well, and fast, Maguire knew that he was not going to catch the leader, so like you say, wasn’t really pushed out any more.
He was off the bridle from a fair way out though, and Geraghty rode a great race on the winner.
December 28, 2011 at 02:22 #384541Would have to agree with that.
To be honest Peddler’s Cross was never really travelling all that well at any stage and looked a bit unsuited to the game.
If Jason is right and I am sure he is he did get a bit of a fright at the first like all horses he’s a thinker.
Let’s not forget they are novices and we all know Peddler’s Cross is better than that.
They will now have to make the decision whether to miss the Arkle because of one horse and go for the Golden Miller or have another crack at him.
If they go for the Arkle and get the same dose again the first thing they’ll say is we should have gone for the Golden Miller. I think common sense will prevail and they will step him up forget the Arkle and start thinking King George and maybe even Gold Cup next season.
11/2 could end up being huge for the GM/Jewson. The only worry is that Tony Martin is in no hurry to go chasing rainbows with Bog Warrior and is very likely to opt for the easier option rather than take on Grand Crus and Peddler’s could end up playing second fiddle to him as he’s a cracking horse with huge potential. Walkon would also be a danger but most of the others lower in the betting won’t even run in the race.
