with £140,000 in prize money the 5 day entry for ascots big race is short on class. since the race closed first voy por esteddes then forman then central house followed by sporozene and river city all pulled out so they didnt have to carry top weight.
oneway is now top weight, whats the betting he pulls out too.
why do trainers have such a phobia about have their horse carrying 11.12 in a handicap?.
if it was a grade one race they would have to carry a similer weight.
so what if the horse was beaten into 2nd by something on 10 stone at least it would prove what a good horse he is.
its so sad to see races like the victor chandler and hennessy lacking in horses rated 160+.
it seems that theses days theres so much money in jumping that trainers can afford to stick their noses up at theses big prizes.
wonder what mr chandler makes of it?
January 15, 2007 at 21:47 #35900The low weights have frightened them away, I think. There are one or two very well handicapped osses.

A look at the official going report might indicate where the real problem lies.
Good to soft, soft in places, good to firm places in the straight
That’s a deterrent to anybody with a horse like Voy Por Ustedes or Foreman that has ambitions to win at the big festivals. Frankly, the presence of ‘good to firm’ in a going report when all around is soft or heavy suggests that Ascot have bigger problems than a lack of view from the stands.

January 15, 2007 at 21:58 #35902Alan makes a fair point, but I don’t agree with Grimes that there are any particularly well handicapped horses in the race. If Voy Por Ustedes ran he would undoubtedly be either favourite or 2nd fav. A very poor race imo.
January 16, 2007 at 13:37 #35903I expect you’re both right. The weight difference, particularly over such a short trip, would surely be unlikely to stop a horse such as VPU winning it.
