I take it you mean in the race he beat kauto Star last season?
He is probably asuming Kauto Star won’t run which could be a very smart move on his part or very dumb if he turns up fitter than he was last season
January 14, 2009 at 18:16 #203920I’m really looking forward to watching Or Noir de Somoza run over here, but as Irish Stamp has already mentioned, 2m 5f (or thereabouts) is really his trip. He was beaten a couple of time over 2m 2f over hurdles, and he didn’t seem to stay 3m 5f in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris, but over his distance, he’s pretty much untouchable. However, I just can’t see him having the speed to get near Master Minded over 2 miles.
I’ve not really looked at the Ryanair Chase in much depth as yet, but I usually do a Champion Hurdle / Queen Mother / Ryanair / Gold Cup each way ante post Lucky 15, and at the moment, I think Or Noir de Somoza could well be my Ryanair choice.

Darren,
If Our Vic and Tamarinbleu run in the Ryanair, will Pipe want three runners? The VC may be a siter to see if he’s quick enough to run in the Champion. Though he is in the Gold Cup as well as the Ryanair. I’d wait until after the VC before your Lucky 15.Mark
Pipe is quoted as saying that if he wins the VC he will go for the champion!!!!! Put that entry back in the drawer..
I think right now Flipper and Big Zeb are the two most realistic challengers for cheltenham and both have about a stone to find…

Master Minded only has to turn up to win this, but despite his extensive layoff I’m considering a small each-way interest in Killaghy Castle (the decision to step him up to 3m at Aintree last time was ridiculous) at 66s.

Good point Mark, especially as I’ve noticed my big priced ante post fancy for the Gold Cup isn’t actually in the race!! I feel that Pipe might still go for 2 in the Ryanair though, as they’re in different ownership, and as Salselon mentions, Our Vic lookes like going to Aintree.
As you say, I think I’ll wait and see what Or Noir De Somoza does on Saturday – my feeling he that he’ll be outpaced early on, but will stay on in the home straight and possibly get a place. Can’t see past Master Minded at all, and from our point of view to frank the form, I’d like to see Petit Robin get second, which I think he could well do, although I reckon Marodima has a chace of second if retaining the ability he had under Paul Nicholls.
All in all, an interesting race this Saturday.

I certainly think that’s the bet as long as 8 run.
January 14, 2009 at 23:18 #203979It is only 12 months since pipe stepped one down in trip to run twist magic ragged round here from the front on soft ground (after which TM has never looked the same since), and where I think Masterminded gets the trip well enough to be there at the end regardless of pace, he is as yet unproven at a furious gallop on testing ground at 2 miles, and that makes his price a bit on the untouchable side.
Would seriously consider Or Noir De Samosa for an e.w bet in this if the ground is testing.
January 16, 2009 at 14:53 #204285There are 5 runners. Best value might be in the ‘without masterminded’ market.
Petit Robin 5/4
Or Noir De Somoza 11/4
Mahogany Blaze 7/1
Natal 7/1
I don’t really have an opinion, because i’ve never saw Or Noir de samoza. It’s just one to watch for me.

Value Is EverythingJanuary 16, 2009 at 16:51 #204331That was a shame.
Petit Robin 5/4, Or Noir De Somoza 11/4 and Natal 7/1 were all available at VC. With Mahogany Blaize 7/1 at Stan James and Tote.
Thought I was going to have a bet on a certainty but VC have suspended their betting.

Value Is EverythingJanuary 17, 2009 at 02:21 #204512To my mind the Pipe horse would have to be outstanding to split MM and Petit Robin. Personally I think PR has a huge upside, I dont do speed ratings religously anymore (but i do calculate the bigger meetings) and his Newbury effort was 2nd only to Master Minded in QM, in the last 3 years.
I thought the presence of the German horse caused a fair bit of indecision as to how he should be ridden at Kempton and his run there suppressed his true ability a fair bit.
I feel the Henderson camp will have learned a lot from that and he looks well clear second best to me and may run the favourite close.January 17, 2009 at 16:41 #204649Master Minded for me. To win by 10+ lengths, nailed on.
January 17, 2009 at 17:42 #204665I can see it being less than that because i think he will ease up.
January 17, 2009 at 19:21 #204691A waste of time – which genius decided to make the best chase handicap of the season in to yet another boring conditions race? I haven’t spoke to one person who thinks it was the right move.
As for Paul Nicholls comment that there wouldn’t be any more runners i the race was still a handicap – drivel.

Plenty can be said about the conditions of the race having been changed, but that performance was monsterous.
January 17, 2009 at 19:23 #204693Machine, brilliant.
January 17, 2009 at 19:25 #204694Superb.
Absolutely amazing.
Some of those jumps, he was leaving so much daylight between his fences, he never looks like falling.
Brilliant horse.
January 17, 2009 at 19:27 #204695Indeed it was – but the race has been ruined by the powers that be.
