This is a race I’m always keen to have an early Antepost on, but the picture just seems a little bit unclear right now.
Chairman of the Sponsors, Max McNeil, who’s colours are well known on the likes of The Worlds End, has already stated that his Chosen Path is likely to head here. He’s out tomorrow in a two horse race at Huntingdon, and although it’s a race that’s hardly going to advertise Cheltenham claims, he should at least prove to be one of the safer Antepost propositions. Talking of The Worlds End, he wouldn’t be a forlorn hope himself, but with his high rating, he’ll surely take in one of The Novice Chases.
In a similar vein is Minella Rocco, more than capable of landing this, but in recent form, maybe high enough in the weights. Festival winner, but that run in The Cotswold was a concern.
Another previous Festival winner, Mister Whitaker, is interesting for this. Holds a Gold Cup entry, but off of 152, this looks more interesting, and I’m not buying that last run at Ascot. He’s miles better than that.
David Pipe has had some joy in this recently, and in a year where I’m struggling to come down strong on anything, his Ramses De Teille looks a realistic contender.
Colin Tizzard won this a few years back with Golden Chieftain, who in the colours of Brocade Racing, and the same connections could head here with White Moon. I’m convinced he’s better than she’s shown, and think he could be a real dark horse. I’ve covered him in to win any race at 33’s.
Give Me A Copper had a really sound comeback at the weekend, and no surprise to see him trap here. He’s currently proving very popular at 16’s.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I rate Dingo Dollar, and I wouldn’t be too concerned about that Skybet run. He’ll surely get an entry for this, but I have one eye on Ayr for him.
Trevor Hemmings likes a go at this, and this could be a race for Vintage Clouds to bounce back in, but equally, it could be another opportunity for the improving Lake View Lad to advertise his Grand National claims.
I think it’s safe to say that it’s worth holding off for the entries, but I’ll give the last word to what I think is a very “unlikely” one in Kansas City Chief. He seemed a strange choice for Tony Bloom, who bought him after some promise in Ireland during 16/17. He’s surely been bought with a long term plan in mind, and with time running out for him, this may just be it. Now with Neil Mulholland, who’s won this before, and a good run at Exeter in Sunday could easily bring him into the picture for this.
I’ll gladly sit this out until the entry stage at the very least though, just too many question marks right now.
Realistic choice for me would be Give Me A Copper or Ramses De Teille, but despite not being the most obvious, I can see White Moon or Kansas City Chief staking a claim.
Happy to sit out for now though.

February 7, 2019 at 18:48 #1395395Same here, after a nudge from Paul Kealy, but will also stick with my first selection in Kimberlite Candy ( although the Kim Muir could be an option for him )
February 12, 2019 at 18:46 #1397276Think Dingo Dollar must be worth another chance after that poor run at Donny. NRNB @ 25’s looks far too big
February 13, 2019 at 23:34 #1397351The NRNB changes everything, and I’ve added Dingo myself.
Not totally convinced that this will be the plan, could easily see him have Ayr as 1 priority, but the NRNB, and the fact that he’ll be nowhere near this price on the day, makes it a straightforward decision for me. Not quite had the season I expected from him, but still, one of those times where it looks worth waiting for NRNB.
My 33’s to win any race on White Moon, isn’t a particularly big bet, so with 33’s available on him, I’ve had to top up that angle. Can easily see connections fancying a swing at this.
The others I’ll leave for now, but another one who I think ticks a few boxes for this, and just the type to spring into life, is Allysson Monterg, who’s 33’s at the moment.
Dingo Dollar 25’s Win
White Moon 33’s Each Way
Both NRNBFebruary 19, 2019 at 11:35 #1398248Any Second Now 16/1 NRNB.
Stayed on well in the Ten Up at the weekend over 3M, think he will go here and show up well off a good mark around 145. Also ran well into 5th in the PP when he was punted heavily, making a couple of mistakes including a bad one at the last. Might be the next Squouateur but at 16s he’s more than big enough to find out.
February 21, 2019 at 23:34 #1398681There’s the usual very strong entry for this, but far too many multiple entries to justify going in again. Kev, I’d actually added Any Second Now myself to this, but NRNB saves the day once again, as it did with White Moon.
I won’t bother listing all the Elliot/Giggs ones that are standing out, as far too many, plus this hasn’t been that strong a race for them, though It’s All Guesswork, Rogue Angel, General Principle, and Noble Endeavour are all interesting. There, I listed some of them, and that’s without mentioning the 40’s for Out Sam. 40’s must be a Type-o. I really would like that NRNB. Either way it’s just too big.
Others to stand out……
Black Corton – Really really likeable horse, who just needs to brush up on his jumping. High enough in weights, but he’s good enough, and 25’s is decent.
The Young Master – Rejuvenated this term, and the 33’s with Sportsbook is an outstanding Each Way Price.
Mister Whitaker – I said earlier in the thread that I wasn’t buying a bit of his run at Ascot, not a bit. He beat a nice horse of Nicholls earlier in the year, and that horse has franked the form a wee bit since. Has an entry in The Gold Cup, and after laying him off in my book for that, I went and added him again at double the odds after Saturday. He’s got Festival form, and although I think they’d love a runner in The Gold Cup, 20’s NRNB is extremely tempting.
Discorama – Really likeable Irish Novice, who unfortunately has an entry at nearly every race at the meeting.
Modus – Runs in The 888Chase at Kempton on Saturday and is a big 50’s for this, but he might be one for The Plate.
The Worlds End – He got found out at Kempton, but before that, had ran very well round here. Obviously got a chance if he got re-routed here.
I’ve bet Out Sam NRNB for The Kim Muir, but sorely tempted with that 40’s here, while on the verge of taking that 20’s NRNB for Mister Whitaker, that is a great price.
For now though, but probably not much longer, sticking with Dingo.
February 22, 2019 at 08:29 #1398699Already backed GMAC at 20s
UP FOR REVIEW 20/1 EW NRNB is my 2nd bet. He might not turn up, but is over priced at 20s if he does. A mark of 146 is very fair, he ran a good race first time out behind Invitation Only at Gorwan Park. Paul Townsend kept him wide throughout and Handicapper kept him on the Same mark.
He also Well in a Grade 1 race at FH Behind AP which is strong form
Im really sweat on him and stuck him in Loads of EW multipules at 20s NRNB. Can see him being 8/1 shot if he turns up.
He is also one of my fancies for the GN.
Good luck all
February 22, 2019 at 11:22 #1398712“… another one who I think ticks a few boxes for this, and just the type to spring into life, is Allysson Monterg, who’s 33’s at the moment.”
Just read in the Post that he’s out for the season, VTC.
February 22, 2019 at 11:29 #1398713Up For Review 20/1 for me also ATP as a first stab.
Any Second Now i liked for this but presume they’re thinking of putting DOC up in the Kim Muir now.
February 22, 2019 at 18:33 #1398760Thanks Gladiateur, yeah, put a post about him on The National thread earlier in the week. Shame, thought he would have been a nice runner for the yard.
February 26, 2019 at 16:07 #1399136Second hoss –
Calipto 20/1 NRNB
Very good win over Black Corton, won nicely looking to relish the step up in trip to 3 miles on a stiffer track. Up 5 for that, thought he was value for more.
Course record is decent, sent off fav for Triumph moons ago when his steering snapped and second to Tiger Roll also at a stage.
Third horse i’ve got my eye on but haven’t bet yet is Ami Desbois, who ran a cracker to just come second on his latest run. If he goes in this around the bottom of the weights i think he’ll go well at a price.
February 27, 2019 at 16:10 #1399197Third bet, this one was too big to let go at the price (Also not sure Calipto/Up For Review will turn up).
Minella Rocco 25/1
152 is the lowest he’s been rated since he won the 4 miler here in 2016, second in the Gold Cup 2017 and had an encouraging run LTO over hurdles. Hurdles preps are a very good angle for winners of this (6 of the last 9), Jonjo also has a good record in it (3 winners in the last 10 years) and at 25s he’s well worth the chance that Jonjo has sweetened him up nicely for this.
February 27, 2019 at 21:26 #1399228I must admit that the stars seem to be aligning for Minella Rocco off 152 here, but do we really think he has the toe for 3 miles on the old course? I have my doubts. Would much prefer the other JP runner Jerrysback if he were allowed to take his place here rather than the Plate.
February 27, 2019 at 21:40 #1399229I got sucked in as well guys.
He’s an old favourite, and though you never quite know what you’re going to get, if he gets there at all, I had to take a chance off of that much more spirited performance the other day.
Finally added Mister Whitaker as well.
Dingo Dollar 25’s
Minella Rocco 20’s
Mister Whitaker 20’s
All NRNBFebruary 27, 2019 at 23:44 #1399250Minella Rocco looks very much like a JP plot. Travelled with much more verve last twice following the wind surgery and I’ll be betting him.
Singlefarmpayment has had a quiet season, running very well in both races. He loves Cheltenham and although he is a wee bit soft in a finish, he ought to go very close.
My third is Arthur’s Gift who looks to have taken readily to fences. He impressed me last time and is a good price.
February 27, 2019 at 23:56 #1399253Hope you’re right Joe.
I’m going four handed in this potentially, and can afford the “add on” at this price.
Sizing Codelco blew me away the tail end of 16/17, and I was sure he was a Gold Cup Horse. He wasn’t.
He might just have had a few physical issues though, and although he was a flop in The Classic Chase when last seen, certainly with no excuses over the ground, its a run that’s shaved another couple of pounds off.
It’s unlikely I know, but at current price doesn’t take too much persuasion to throw him in here. Tizzard has won this before with Golden Chieftain, also at a huge price, and that horses form that year, hardly screamed winner of this either.
It’s two years since those outstanding performances at Aintree and Punchestown, and less than a year since his very encouraging run in The Bowl.
Ground will probably be watered against him, but I’m not letting that price slip away.
Sizing Codelco 100’s Each Way
