Did anyone see the fawning interview Robert Cooper conducted with the chairman of Chelmsford this evening?

They are planning to build a turf track inside the AW one. At the moment the plan would be to open in 2 years.

That sounds fair enough but what I couldn’t believe is that they appear to be leaving the grandstand in the middle of the course permanently thus preventing race goers seeing most of the action. The chairman did say that the owners of the course were a betting and media company and that the inside of the grandstand is effectively a massive betting hall so it appears that the racing will be secondary to taking money from the punters.

It amazes me how little interest some racegoers actually take of the racing, so maybe those who go to Chelmsford won’t be bothered.

In my experience visiting various racecourses, some racegoers never seem to move from the bars, many of those who venture into the grandstand spend most of the race staring at the big screen until the final fence/furlong.

Walking the course before racing, seeing the horses close up at the start and standing by a fence/hurdle, for a couple of races at least, is the most enjoyable part of the day out.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

    How right you are :D
I won’t be going to Chelmsford if I can’t get easy access to the pre parade ring, the paddock, seeing the horses going to post and a good view as they come home.

It also amazes me that people will go racing and stand in the bar all day watching the action on the screen when it is happening live a few yards away from them.
So many literally rush to the Tote as soon as they arrive and put on all their bets for 7 races without even taking the opportunity to see the horses that they have backed.

My local course before Chelmsford came along was Newmarket and I’ve no intention of deserting it, the facilities, for those that wish to use them are second to none on both the Rowley Mile and the July Course…roll on the Craven Meeting.
