With the evenings lasting longer, the weather (notionally at least) improving and those of you with Seasonal Affective Disorder on better terms with yourselves, I feel a meet-up or two at the races may be in the offing.
To start the ball rolling, would anyone be interested in some sort of informal gathering at the evening meeting at God’s own Towcester on Friday, May 30th?
I figured this may suit more of you than my usual "anybody going?" suggestions (a soggy Ystradowen in March isn’t everyone’s bag), as both the London and Brum factions may be able to get there in time for the first race at 6.30pm, it’ll be the weekend to all intents and purposes, and entry to the course will be free of charge.
As I say, I’m not thinking of anything more than just some / many / any TRFfers meeting up, watching the racing and having a chat. It just struck me as having been a while since anything of this nature was posted on the boards.
Cheers,
Jeremy
(graysonscolumn)PS Before that, I’m – inevitably – at Cartmel on Monday afternoon if anyone wants to say hi.

May 21, 2008 at 10:16 #164643Jeremy – I may be at Cartmel on Monday. The flat horse i’m involved is finally moving away from the dark side and joining the forces of good in the the 4yo Novice Hurdle.

Which horse is that, Underscore, if you don’t mind me asking?

May 21, 2008 at 10:38 #164647Moonwalking. He’s slipped down the ratings on the flat and he’s taken very well to the hurdles at home.
May 21, 2008 at 10:40 #164649Jeremy, I won’t be at Towcester unfortunately, having been at Sandown the previous evening. Sorry Grasshopper I know this is a heinous crime.
Talking of the "dark side" I’ll be at the furthest point of Hogwarts on Saturday when commentating at the Essex and Suffolk Midnight Steeplechase kicking off at 6.30pm at Higham ptp course.
May 21, 2008 at 10:40 #164650Moonwalking.
Moonwalking, eh? Let’s hope he gives the jockey a Thriller of a ride rather than a Bad one. Or even a Dangerous one.

Ah, that’s come round again, hasn’t it! Someone really ought to cover this event, as it sounds a scream – maybe the Post could do a piece, as they did on flapping last year, or John Beasley photograph it for the Big Green Annual?

May 21, 2008 at 11:35 #164655Im at Sandown the previous evening too im afraid. A very good card in prospect
Pity
May 21, 2008 at 11:38 #164656I’ll be there – Hopefully with a hoarde of young women in tow… I’ll try and remember to wear my grey trilby so if you see me just grab me and say hi.
May 21, 2008 at 11:38 #164657Can’t make it from this part of the world, which is a shame.

Well, I could get there but I would never get home again, at least not the same day!
Nice idea though.

May 21, 2008 at 11:56 #164663Nice idea Jeremy.
Even though Towcester is on my doorstep I can’t see me getting back from Goodwood in time so I, unfortunately, will not be able to make it.
May 21, 2008 at 12:03 #164668A bit of advance notice, and not trying to steal your thunder, but I had been thinking of arranging a TRF Royal Ascot meet-up, perhaps for Monday 16th June, which could double as an excuse to discuss the following day’s Newton Abbot card. Likely to be central-ish London again.
Any thoughts?
May 21, 2008 at 13:06 #164677Should be ok for that

No thunder stolen at all, good sir – the more meet-ups, the merrier!
I guess it depends on how sit-down-and-intensive-thrashing-it-out (as per the pre-Cheltenham meet-up) you want this one to be. If it’s like that, then yes, the Lowlander or similar will do nicely, whereas if it’s just a bit of patter inbetween races I’d even think of suggesting meeting up at Windsor races that night as an alternative.

May 21, 2008 at 13:58 #164698That is not a bad idea at all, Jeremy.
May 21, 2008 at 14:04 #164701Yes Jeremy it is unusual to say the least.
I’ve just received advanced notice of the entries and we’ve got 6 in the "Bed Race" – where the riders start by lying on a bed on the course next to the winning post. They have to jump up and vault onto their runners and then race a lap – including about 6 hurdles.
They haven’t given me colours because the jockeys will be wearing night attire.. For that reason I’m most looking forward to commentating on the Cavenham Stud Broody Mares race !
It’ll finish off with an Inter-Hunt Challenge where they have 3 teams of 3 each racing a lap and passing a whip baton.
Most interesting runner that will tickle your interest is Royal Tir in the Men’s race which has won over 230,000 pounds including winning a Grade 3 at Auteuil and running against Kotkijet. Sadly now on the downgrade having won a couple of point to points in cheek pieces.
