The tight-lipped and non-superlative Andre Fabre regarding Manduro’s unfortunate retirement – “He was the best I trained, and the best by a distance”.

This thread gives me the opportunity to say that, in my opinion, it is very, VERY, important that you never – and I mean NEVER – take a blind bit of notice of anything any trainer ever says in public EVER.

They have zero interest in helping you, the punter, their every word is loaded as various vested interests (mainly their owners) are at play every time they open their mouths, and what’s more they can’t actually read a formbook any better than you can, not even regarding their own horses.

I speak from 40-odd years experience betting on horses, having often successfully ignored the direst of adverse advance warnings from their handlers.

    Thank you and good night.

Richard Hannon Senior walking around Newbury in the posh part with some rich Arab owner.
I had sneaked past security and asked if I could have a photo to which Hannon said “if you ******* must”
I got the rich Arab to take the photo, back in the day when a camera didn’t have a phone attached to it.
I thanked Mr Hannon to which he replied “now please **** off”…

I just think that’s nonsense ian

I’ve always taken note of trainer comments. Some are better than others but tell me who else is going to give a more in depth opinio?

What is laughable is that some expect their comments to be simplistic “he will bolt home!” Crap but If Hobbs says “we are concerned about the ground a little” or Charlton talks one up (hes a very good guide) then it would be barmy not to take notice

I would say that time and time again I’ve taken decent steers from comments made by trainers. Why not ?

If you make money betting by listening to trainers, good luck to you, Clive.

We all have our own methods we’ve honed over time based on our own individual results using them.

The best in-depth opinion to take note of is your own – based on what you see with your own two eyes.

You’re not getting the trainer’s opinion, anyway – you’re getting what they are prepared to release into the public domain.

What trainers say a horse can and cannot do isn’t the same as hard evidence in the shape of racecourse form – and too many punters seem to think it is.

The idea that Appleby rings the makhtouns beforenthe 2 30 at lingfield to ask “what shall we tell the punters” is nuts

I know a medium profile owner of decent NH horses reasonably well and he has zero interest in punting. Hes made his tens of millions so what’s the point?

I also know a much smaller owner of a few low grade flat horses and shes exactly the same. Wouldnt cross her mind

    I never said they do?

Where have you got that from?

But individual trainers have individual agendas.

Anyway, each to their own – if you want to bet based on what trainers say, crack on!

    It’s not either or

I always put form right at the top by a big margin but its hardly the only factor

Once again I can’t find the bit where I said it was.

You’re far too smart to let trainer flannel put you away, Clive – top man.

The form book is all you really need – my best win last year was a German horse, don’t know it’s trainer from Adam and even if I did I wouldn’t know the German for: “it’s flying and will love this bog – the Deutschmarks are down!” anyway.

    You said this ffs

They have zero interest in helping you, the punter, their every word is loaded as various vested interests (mainly their owners) are at play every time they open their mouths, and what’s more they can’t actually read a formbook any better than you can, not even regarding their own horses.

    Honestly?

The vast majority frankly do not have the time or inclination to sit around plotting to put punters away.

I would say that once you get below the tiny elite training Classic prospects at the top the rest actually do sit around plotting because they have no choice.

Most trainers operate in Class 4, 5 and 6 Handicaps and you cannot pay staff and make ends meet simply off training fees and derisory prize money percentages.

A lot of trainers have to land at least a couple of thumping gambles a year just to put hot food on the table regularly.

Come on, Clive, a man like you must know how the economics of this game work.

Telling the public the truth is a luxury only those at the very top can afford.

Sorry but cant have it that all but a “tiny elite” rely on gambles to survive. It might be a fair number but thats it

Frankly i have little or no interest in low grade flat racing and even within jumps, my main interest, i bet infrequently and treat lingfield and plumpton as just a nice bit of watching.

Yours does indeed seem a Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Festival view of the game, Clive, and that is fair enough.

    Each to their own.

    That’s rubbish

I go jump racing 35 times a year on average

Only about 4 or 5 days will be fontwell plumpton level

    Only one day is Cheltenham

    Oh dear!

“Nonsense,” “rubbish” – I don’t seem to be able to say the right thing this morning!

I was picking up on this –

“Frankly i have little or no interest in low grade flat racing and even within jumps, my main interest, i bet infrequently and treat lingfield and plumpton as just a nice bit of watching.”

    Apologies!
