“A decent punter looks back after the race and what they’ve missed and yes I missed this.”
100% DISAGREE.
That statement assumes every winner was there to be found and that simply isn’t the case.
Backfitting data to try to find a reason why a winner won is a hazardous exercise.
Life is, for sure, a perpetual learning curve, but it’s only by looking at results overall – rather than backfitting data for individual ones – and detecting patterns, that anyone justifies the label “decent punter.”

January 9, 2022 at 11:02 #1577228I might as well have written that in an obscure Chinese dialect – apologies!
Anyway, if there is a block function, I hope you never use it on me, Clive!
I’d miss the banter!

Its when its three times it’s a block
January 9, 2022 at 11:30 #1577233I don’t move in exalted circles and can no longer afford to go racing, so I never get to hear any pearls of wisdom from trainers.

Is there a block function here ?”You WERE mocking homeless folk Clive, and you know it. Why mention “freezing” conditions and folk eating dog food? You are being a disingenuous coward. You should have just admitted it was in bad taste. If you are ever trapped in a hole with a shovel, stop digging.

January 10, 2022 at 00:56 #1577324I wouldn’t mind getting a few brandies into clivexx and nudging him to give his real opinion on punters but I’d have to wear one of those clear plastic face shields for protection.
I agree talking about fellas being homeless is over the top, I don’t want to see anyone lose their shirt from punting, which actually happens, but you can’t help but laugh at some of the paranoia out there, and on the other side the reasons why something will or did win.
I had two experiences of betting this week. One place there was excuse after excuse being trotted out after each race, this was wrong, the jockey didn’t do X, then they’d run out between every race and get more on which would be followed up with more excuses. One person was happy to say he won, though, which was really refreshing.
The other place no-one said they won but plenty of people happily admitted they lost, and one said how much he was down that day (a fair amount) but no-one made excuses or said the ride was wrong or anything dodgy happened. The prevailing view, when I asked, was when something dodgy does happen it’s your fault for not predicting it’d happen and it’s part of gambling, and equally that people give jockeys crap (and worse) for bad rides all the time but bad rides are also part of gambling and not some conspiracy against you. For all we would know a car alarm could have been going off all night and they didn’t get much sleep.
Two totally different places, with completely different outlooks, where the first would be far more known for racing. The only similarity between the two was the people who were the quietest were the people I saw collecting winnings in the bookies after.

In fact I drink little and am a pretty chilled type but so long as it’s good brandy and not diamond white cider

February 26, 2022 at 07:47 #1584818This is a case in point about trainer quotes before the race.
All of them give their charges a chance and we have 3 horses with no quotes so thats a guess.
In the round, I find its better off ignoring all this noise, it hinders more that it helps. Just my opinion, theres no right or wrong way I guess.
Nicholls pearls of wisdom about Lalor are particularly comical, after 2 attempts at 2m 4f around cheltenham, the horse is now crying out for 3 miles on a flat track going the other way.
Kitty’s Light, who was at the heart of the incident which saw Enrilo lose the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown last April but whose most recent effort here in January was far from encouraging.
“He’s turned a corner the last few weeks,” said Williams. “He’s looking well and did a great piece of work last week.
“I just wonder whether three miles round there will be sharp enough for him but it’s good prize-money, while one of his career highpoints was at Chepstow over three miles so you can’t discount him.”
Five Star Getaway arrives with much better recent racecourse form to his name, having beaten last Saturday’s Ascot winner Fortescue over this course and distance over Christmas.
Cap Du Nord was fifth in this race 12 months ago and produced a decent effort to be third in the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster last month.Williams said: “His form took a step in the right direction last time so hopefully he’s coming back to form.”
“He seems well and he’s a classy horse at home,” said Williams. “Kempton suits him and hopefully he’ll handle the quicker ground. We’re looking forward to him.”
Paul Nicholls, trainer of Lalor and Enrilo
I think Lalor is crying out for three miles and he’s another of mine that a flat track and decent ground will suit very well. He’s a high-class horse and if he runs like he did in the Paddy Power, he’s got a leading chance. We thought Enrilo had a massive chance in the Ladbrokes Trophy and he fell when travelling well. We ran him back too quick at Cheltenham. We’ve kept him for the spring when he’s a better horse and the idea is this race and the Bet365 Gold Cup again with a run in between. Hopefully he’ll run well.Harry Fry, trainer of Phoenix Way
He’s won over three miles when hurdling and Kempton is a flatter track than Ascot. We’re 6lb higher for winning the last day so we’ll find out whether he’s up to the task or not. We won this a few years ago with Opening Batsman and it’s a nice prize to have a go at.Philip Hobbs, trainer of Zanza
The one question mark is his disappointing run last time but we think it was just down to the very holding ground at Cheltenham. When he was a youngster he didn’t really want soft ground. He’s got the cheekpieces on as he did at Cheltenham which I hope will mean he travels a bit better. Hopefully three miles around an easy track is his right trip.Zanza has been aimed at the Coral Trophy by Philip Hobbs, who has won the equivalent race four times
Evan Williams, trainer of Annsam
We definitely wanted to aim at this race. He could have gone up to Doncaster for the Sky Bet Chase but the ground wasn’t what we wanted so we’ve waited. He’s a big strong horse and, while you can do anything you want on him, he seems to enjoy going forward.Sam Thomas, trainer of Our Power
I’m looking forward to running him. It’s his first run over three miles but if you’re ever going to find out, it’s best to do it in a big race. We go in there with an each-way chance providing his jumping holds up and he gets the trip. He’s a nice laidback character and he goes in there with a bit of a squeak.Nick Williams, trainer of Galahad Quest
The way he’s been running gives hope he’ll stay. He’s getting older but it is slightly into the unknown. If they go a real end-to-end gallop that might play against us, who knows? He was second to Buzz in a hurdle at Taunton and we’re not worried about him going right-handed. Because people save their horses for Cheltenham this can be a valuable race that isn’t always that tough. I think he’ll be fine and normally going up in trip has benefited our horses.Gary Moore, trainer of Zhiguli
Three miles is not usually his game but we reckoned going this trip on good ground around Kempton would be better than going two and a half somewhere else on bad ground. He has an each-way chance.February 26, 2022 at 07:55 #1584820I just think a lot of lazy punters prefer to read quotes than a form book – it’s easier.

February 27, 2022 at 06:37 #1584980It seems that most of us take what connections say pre-race with a bucket full of salt but still the racing channels persist in devoting so much time to these interviews. Is this another case of ‘them’ knowing what ‘we’ want?
