Totally Scottish was put down at Sedgefield yesterday April 8th following injuries he sustained in a fall during the handicap hurdle there.

A real character it was the 12yo’s 97th start under rules. He first ran almost a decade ago in 1999, won his first race at Carlisle in October 2001 and was still winning as late as January 2008, a magnificent achievement.

A stalwart of the Northern racing scene, he will be missed.

    RIP.

How very sad. He was a very loveable sort, and really was part of the furniture at many northern jumps tracks. RIP

:( That is such sad news. I saw him run several times and he was a real battler who seemed to love his racing.
Wasn’t it Sedgefield that is being looked into because of the high amount of fatalities there this season?
    Condolenses to all connections.

i cannot understand why a horse is asked to run that many times.and then to not be able to enjoy retirement because he was killed.it is all down to greedy owners and trainers. :( :?:

I don’t agree with that at all. The Reveleys have looked after him throughout his racing career (from1999), a lot of their horses are with them for years and years & I am sure regarded with great affection. It could be he was one of those horses who still enjoy their racing or one who would not take kindly to retirement & 12 isn’t really that old. I’m sure the whole Reveley team are devastated.

i have nothing against racing, but to race a horse that many times to me is just greedy.he could still enjoy life outside of racing,

Racing is too inexact a science for those sort of generalisations to be entirely fair; and as Quixallcrossett indicates, there seems little reason to prevent an entirely happy, healthy veteran from carrying on as long as that’s what he wants to do into his dotage and he presents no danger to himself and others.

Quixallcrossett’s namesake is one example she and I obviously hold dear, having been close to his connections for many years now, whilst the likes of Sharp Hat and Redoubtable have argued the case for Flat animals in running 200ish times each and welll into the veteran stage.
