Would you have Martin Dwyer (Liverpool) and Hayley Turner (Notts)?
Dwyer is a good jockey in my book and Turner must be worth a mention for her feats? Or are we getting too close to that ten mark and so anyone less than the calibre of Piggott is to be excluded?
I think that someone ought to warn The Palace…
May 20, 2007 at 11:57 #60728Weren’t Josh Gifford, Richard Pitman & Terry Biddlecombe finished more than 30 years ago? And Pitman is the most famous loser in NH history!
If we’re counting British, which I doubt we are, I’d suggest, no, insist upon Carl Llewellyn, and give a wee squeak for Peter Niven as well.
May 21, 2007 at 08:08 #60729Alright I will include Scu and M Dwyer friggo, thats still only seven, its been a bit of a struggle to get this far, so 3 more needed. The palace need not worry.
May 21, 2007 at 12:22 #60730Richard Hills
Adrian Nicholls
Robert Thornton
There’s the last 3 for you MM
May 21, 2007 at 12:26 #60731Choc Thornton should definitely be in the list….
May 21, 2007 at 18:33 #60732Dickie Hills and best jockey is an oxymoron
May 21, 2007 at 18:59 #60733Richard Hills??????????????????? :o
Choc Thornton absolutely has to be in there. Guesty too and I’d stick Brad in there as well, along with Jamie Osborne.
May 21, 2007 at 21:45 #607343 Left. Pick 3 of:
Choc Thornton
Carl Llewellyn (clue: he’s definitely one if you include the Welsh)
Richard Hills
Jamie Osbourne
Adrian Nicholls.
And perhaps the aforementioned R C Guest, who rode the winner of the toughest National I’ve seen in my 20 years.
All are (or were) top jockeys as your criterion specified. I’d suggest a leopard-skin thong.

Fine. your opinion and I respect it. Pick 3 of the other 4. No doubt they’re all top class.
May 21, 2007 at 22:01 #60737Adrian Nicholls top class lol, of course in my opinion i think he’s nothing more than a average jock who rides alot of his fathers horses in handicap sprints. If you’ll notice he doesnt get many rides in group races and many rides outside dandys stable.
May 21, 2007 at 22:03 #60738Also why was he shipped off Gift Horse when he competed in group races?
May 22, 2007 at 12:20 #60739If Philip Robinson is English, and I can’t be bothered researching his nationality  , then he’d be in my top 10.
May 22, 2007 at 13:37 #60740Philip Robinson – good call ToneLoc.
has anyone mentioned Kevin Darley ?
Joe Mercer was still riding winners within the last 30 years so ought to be counted in too. Was Stan Mellor ?
George Duffield ?
Jason Weaver ?
Where were Bob (B R) Davies and Alan Munro (is he a jock?) from?
No, for obvious reasons
May 22, 2007 at 17:15 #60742Just to say that if you have to include Peter Scudamore as one of the top ten English jockeys in the past 30 years, then you really are scraping the barrel.
May 22, 2007 at 17:59 #60743Precisely – anyone mentioning Adrian Nicholls or Richard Hills must be taking the p*ss.
Alan Munro is Australian I believe.
Also, what part of "Top English jockeys" do people not understand????? That includes Carl Llewellyn for Christ’s sake – Welsh is not English!! It’s not hard…..
