Does anyone remember the toys coming out the pram with this one when he tipped it at 33’s for the Supreme but it ran in the County? Did it not lead to Segal expressing in print that he’d never tip/back a Pipe horse ante-post ever again. Ten months later, not only is he tipping a Pipe horse ante-post again, but it’s the same horse!!!
January 23, 2008 at 00:33 #137145That’s the basis of Segal’s work isn’t it, talking complete and utter tosh…

Did he mention his previous paddy-induced comments in putting up Osana at all, or did he gloss over them with his usual mixture of contradictory evaluation and non-sensical assessment?
January 23, 2008 at 11:29 #137201Harsh LGR –
January 23, 2008 at 12:06 #137208Has to be doubtful if Osana represents value at this stage at 13/2.
I tipped him up at 10s just after he won at Cheltenham but have no interest in a top-up at current odds. How much shorter will he be on the day?January 23, 2008 at 12:53 #137226Dunno, Carvills……………..if Sizing Europe wins the AIG, then I can see both horses being cut to around joint-faves in the Champion Hurdle market.
I think Osana has a proper chance at Cheltenham, and I don’t just say that because I backed him at 55 in October (is this fore-timing, after-timing, or pre-timing??
)January 23, 2008 at 13:01 #137232………do you care?
Colin
January 23, 2008 at 13:02 #137233On reflection, Colin………..no.
January 23, 2008 at 13:32 #137242Thought I had a good price at fourty something before the Boylesports. Well done Grasshopper. My price though has to be brought down a peg or two as have backed 4 horses so far, one being Iktitaf.
Segal was clearly speaking metaphorically when he said he would not back another of D.Pipes. What other race is Osana supposed to go for this time? The Arkle without a run over fences and forego the second best chance of winning a Champion Hurdle. This is turning out to be a poor looking Champion hurdle at the moment, ripe for an improving horse. Osana, Sizing Europe or even Khyber Kym.
Good tip imo
Value Is EverythingJanuary 23, 2008 at 15:48 #137271If it’s any consolation GT, I didn’t get a load on at that price. I’ve also backed Aitmatov, who probably won’t go anyway, so the 55 is somewhat academic.
January 23, 2008 at 17:37 #137286marb, even a dolt like you should be able to tell the difference between backing a horse ante-post at 55 for the Champion Hurdle………..and backing him on the day in a competitive, twenty-runner handicap…………..under top-weight…………………on bottomless ground…………………at 6/1……………….and then calling it an "each-way thieving" bet…………..which even though Osana placed, it most certainly was not.
January 23, 2008 at 17:58 #137289Weren’t Pipes all running like drains at that meeting – I took the excellent run of Osana at the time to suggest he was very smart.
January 23, 2008 at 19:13 #137303So was the Greatwood the wrong race to run him in then? Obviously you only had a tickle at 55’s but I would have thought you would have expected a bold show in the Greatwood, no?
That’s a different question altogether.
At the time, it was your assertion that Osana was an ‘each-way theiving’ opportunity that I challenged.
He wasn’t.
Regardless of the fact that he was placed, 20-runner handicap hurdles where they bet 5/1 the jolly, are not, never have been, and never will be, ‘each-way theiving’ races.
Did I expect Osana to go close in the Greatwood? The answer is no. I thought he had far too much to do under top-weight, on ground that wasn’t certain to suit him, and as Smithy has pointed out, the stable was not firing at the time.
As for the Greatwood being the right race, given his handicap mark at the time, there probably weren’t too many alternatives open to connections, other than pitch him straight into Graded company, or try him over fences.
January 23, 2008 at 19:46 #137314The Champion Hurdle looks a competitive event, if not top drawer, and it’s not hard to envisage any of the first 12 in the market coming to the last with some sort of chance.
I’d be keen to oppose Osana and Sizing Europe, as I don’t think either have achieved anything spectacular and could just prove vulnerable to a more experienced performer. Sublimity’s performance at Cheltenham was appalling for me (my grandma would stand a chance of beating Penzance around Prestbury, metal knee and all) and Katchit just doesn’t look to have the requisite class.
Of the rest at the head of the market I just can’t see Harchibald and Al Eile not being involved. I’m not overly concerned by the former’s defeat at the hands of Straw Bear (who could make up the first three) at Kempton and would expect that result to be oveturned.
January 23, 2008 at 19:53 #137315Al Eile is not suited to Cheltenham, an opinion his connections share. He’s better on flat tracks, hence his Aintree record.
January 23, 2008 at 20:05 #137321That’s as may be, carvillshill, but whilst his most recent performances there haven’t been anything special he did run well there as a novice. And, in a year when next door’s Jack Russell would have a chance in the Champion Hurdle, he’d be worth chancing for me.
January 24, 2008 at 08:36 #137387I’d be keen to oppose Osana and Sizing Europe, as I don’t think either have achieved anything spectacular and could just prove vulnerable to a more experienced performer.
I take the opposing view, LGR.
With the possible exception of Sublimity, everything else in the Champion Hurdle field is an open book (Al Eile in particular looks thoroughly exposed), and I’d rather side with something that appears progressive.
All the experienced performers are much of a muchness – the lunatic Harchibald apart – and in a race that looks like it won’t take too much winning, I’d want to be on-side with something that still has improvement to come.
January 24, 2008 at 09:09 #137391One horse I strongly fancy for this is Blythe Knight. Group 3 winner on the flat as well as group 2 placed last season. Although he was very disappointing in the Fighting Fifth, that run was too bad to be true and he had been on the go in both codes an awful long time. The break between that and Cheltenham should greatly benefit.
His preceeding hurdles run was at Aintree, where he absolutely cantered all over Osana, and won as easy as you liked. And not only that, but continued to show a great level of improvement on the flat in the summer.
Whilst Mr Segal dismisses him as he may not handle the track, his group 3 win came on the undulating turf of Epsom, hence no real logic or evidence to support this view.
