Henrietta Knight has reported that Somersby will be aimed at the Ryanair, where he will join the likes of Poquelin, Little Josh and Mad Max from the December Gold Cup.
December 12, 2010 at 00:36 #332219I backed Mad Max today Bos, but I don’t see the point in going for the Ryanair anymore. Got to face it, he just does not stay. Should go for the Champion.
Value Is EverythingDecember 12, 2010 at 00:51 #332223Have to agree Ginge, Mad Max has seemed not to stay and both his runs this season at Cheltenham. However, I’d fancy him in a small field Melling Chase, where he could lead pillar to post ala what he did at Aintree this year. Don’t think he’s good enough to win a Champion Chase but definitely would merit his place in the line up.

The horse started losing ground right after the 3rd last and appeared to blow up. He could hardly get over the last he was so tired. If that’s a sign of a horse not staying I’m a Dutchman.
The horse hacked up going away against to top notchers at Aintree when he came right last season. Prior to that he ran a very similar race to what he did yesterday weakening badly in the latter stages but that was over 2 miles behind Sizing Europe.
What Mad Max needs is a bit mmore time and when he does come right 3 miles won’t beyond him let alone 2m5f.
December 12, 2010 at 13:04 #332280Aintree is a sharper track, horses don’t need as much stamina. May be I should have said "doesn’t stay 2 1/2 miles in a strongly run race on a stiff track". Though there is a doubt as to what he beat there.
Second Somersby did not want to go out on to the course and got kicked at the start, probably below form. The Nightingale is a good horse going right-handed, a moderate one going the other way. Jumped badly right-handed at Aintree. Othermix ran poorly, a distance behind the third. The other two fell. Did Mad Max need to stay 2 1/2 miles at Aintree?
Mad Max would need them to walk the first half of a race to get 3 miles.
Value Is EverythingDecember 12, 2010 at 13:09 #332283I was incredibly impressed with MasterMinded today. He was jumping only 70% for me. I think he fiddled a few today compared to his normal extradinary leaping.
I’m still trying to work out what race you were watching; apart from edging to the right at the 7th, his jumping was absolutely flawless. Indeed, if, at any point this season, a horse makes a better shape over a fence than Master Minded did over either the first, second-last or last, I’ll be astounded.
It was the perfect follow-up to his Ascot rout and proof positive that he’s once again a force to be reckoned with. He’ll be better granted a stronger pace too, leaving Captain Cee Bee as the only horse capable of getting anywhere near him.
I agree that Master Minded didn’t make any mistakes or even look as though he would, but I can see what Ruby/Saddle means, though. When he is really on song Master Minded gives a masterclass on how to get from one side of a fence to the other as quickly as possible at every fence. He was very good in the Tingle Creek, but there were a few deviations from perfection when returning to earth a little earlier than expected and catching the trailing edge of the fence with his forelegs on the downward trajectory.
Maybe Ruby/Saddle was watching very closely to see if his/her hero might have done the job a little bit differently?
December 12, 2010 at 18:07 #332332It was a good performance but Petit Robin (given an excellent ride by Barry Geraghty) is exposed as well below Championship Level.
My view on Master Minded is that these days he needs sticky going to show his best. If it comes up good at the festival I will look elsewhere.
All Ferdy’s ran poorly yesterday – I imagine with the snow in North Yorks they’ll have missed plenty of work. I’ll look for Kalahari King to run much better next time – although again he’s probably not up to winning a QMCC.

I believe their was a few fences he didnt ping…he is the best leaper of a fence i have seen so i expect him to hit on stride 100% all the time. He last 3 jumps were perfection and the last 2 where sublime television treats but their was a few fences just starting at the back straight and the mid part where i saw him take a extra step and fiddled oveer. Am looking forward to Ruby getting back aboard but NF did a sterling job so far
December 13, 2010 at 18:16 #332465Did what was expected really.
I don’t think he’s ever going to put up another performance like his first Champion Chase, but won’t need to. Big Zeb will be a greater danger and could still improve, but needs to.
If I were not on him already, I’d think about 2/1, but it would be only a saver bet. 16/1 Woolcombe Folly looks too big. I’ll leave it until nearer the time to get involved again.
May be should have taken the 16/1. Now top price 10/1.
