Monty chose Molinari, Harrington and Donald as his three wild card picks for the Ryder Cup. Monty has stated that Justin Rose found out on the range before he plays his final round at the Barclays. What idiot in the European tour committee decided that the announcement should be made while players in contention over in the States were playing or about to embark on their final round?

August 29, 2010 at 18:26 #315088Have to say I think he’s picked the right players. But yes timing was horrendous for Rose, would throw most people off if they were about to embark on a round.
August 29, 2010 at 19:14 #315091Picking Harrington over Casey or Rose strikes me as bizarre. His record this year is poor, he invariably loses in the first round of the only big matchplay tournament, in which Casey was runner up to Poulter, he hasn’t won a match in the last two Ryder Cups, and he hasn’t supported the European Tour more than Casey or Rose.

August 29, 2010 at 19:25 #315093Harrington is a terrible pick IMO
August 29, 2010 at 19:26 #315094For me’ Harrington is worlds apart from Rose on the big stage.
Casey is very much a nearly man aswell.
August 29, 2010 at 19:51 #315098No doubt, Harrington has to deliver this time, he can feel extremely fortunate to get the Wild Card. I do believe in time he will sort out his game and add to his major tally.

Did you see his final round in’ the Irish Masters, exceptional.
Westwood is by far the best Golfer in Europe on his day though.

I don’t think Harrington was ever out of contention, such is the strength of his relationship with Montgomerie.
His inclusion has, in all honesty, annoyed me a great deal. In Paul Casey we have a matchplay specialist with the highest world ranking of the quintet and in Justin Rose we have a confident, two-time winner (this season) on the US tour and the perfect partner for Ian Poulter.
As for Harrington? Out-of-form, swinging poorly and an appalling Ryder Cup record from 2006 and 2008.
Well done, Monty.
I’ve been hugely impressed by Dustin Johnson this year and whilst he appeared to ‘choke’ when leading the US Open, his game is tailor-made for the Ryder Cup. He hits the ball unbelievable distances, can shake off a bad hole without too much trouble and is never going to be severely punished for an errant tee shot in this format.
I’ll be interested to see what price he is to be a) top overall scorer and b) top American.
Sky Bet’s 6/1 about Donald, Molinari and Harrington all losing their singles matches also has some appeal.
