As a fan who has suffered from the duopoly in Scotland I can fully understand most racing fans being ambivalent to which one of the big two win the big races. Very few group ones are won by so called lesser stables bar maybe the sprints or the staying races. Godolphin have suddenly burst onto life after a torrid few years. Those magic carrots doing their job again.🤣

Ever since 2009, at about this time of year, Sheikh Mohammed has given the Queen several yearlings. Her Majesty has always accepted the gift, including last year. Left to her own devices, I’m not sure she would have complied given the revelations in March 2020 of abduction, torture, intimidation, and piracy on the high seas attributed to this man. It remains possible that the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) recommended last year’s acceptance for diplomatic reasons.

    From The Times, 7 October:

Dubai is a key intelligence and defence partner in the Gulf. Along with Saudi Arabia the UAE is a lucrative destination for British-made weapons. Post-Brexit the Gulf has been a key market for trade as well as a lucrative source of foreign investment in Britain.

For me the phone-tapping regime, while reflecting lamentably on Sheikh Mohammed’s already deplorable reputation, doesn’t seem as serious as the aforementioned abductions et cetera. Therefore I’m wondering what the Queen will do this year, around about now, if and when the Sheikh offers his annual gift.

In my opinion her acceptance would indicate FCDO influence, while a refusal may risk upsetting Sheikh Mohammed enough to jeopardise our interests in the Gulf.

For the avoidance of doubt, I don’t know Her Majesty, Sheikh Mohammed, anyone who works for Godolphin, Native Trail, or anyone in the FCDO.

    So I could be wrong.

A bit off point but what’s going to happen to the gulf is say 50 to 100 years time when the oil is no longer needed …..it,ll be like the deserted gold mining towns in the US , dusty rolls Royce’s instead of rusty pickups

To be fair he has thought of that hence the 7 star hotels and indoor skiing and all the rest of the vulgarity that will ensure Dubai remains a 365 day a year luxury tourist destination long after the oil has run out. (Unless you fancy a pint and a quick game of cards that is, obviously)

Most people link Dubai’s riches to oil. Far from it. About 90% (or more) of Dubai’s income is generated from non-oil related activities. Oil is in Abu Dhabi, which is a separate emirate.

Remains to be seen what (if any) impact this might have on Godolphin’s UK operations https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/21/ruler-of-dubai-ordered-to-pay-divorce-settlement-that-could-exceed-500m

If Sheikh Mo continues to own horses in Britain it will be seen by the public as sports-washing.

Not sure the ‘general public’ care enough about racing itself to overwhelmingly call for him being ‘kicked out’ if that were even possible for racing’s powers that be to do that to an owner that also happens to be a Vice President & Prime Minister of another country (UAE).

Not that it should be a consideration but if they were able to ‘kick him out’ would the potential fallout have a big risk of actually sinking British flat racing, considering the vast Arab investiture in racing would all the other Arab owners up and leave en masse in solidarity to him? Would that fallout spill into other economic areas between the two countries?

There’s never been a worse time to be an allegedly misogynistic oil multi-billionaire who recently bought a terraced house in Swansea and has already moved in, hoping to use it as a base from which to attend the Welsh National next week.

No, but I can offer a clue – it’s possible I made up the last bit about the terraced house in Swansea!

I have heard her referred to as a few things, but “tidy MILF” is a new one.

Not that I’m necessarily disagreeing – once again Clive illustrates he remains one comedian who is singularly unaffected by Cancel Culture.

Do we still think it’s OK to have him racing in Britain given what’s happened to Chelsea. They are just a football club though not establishment. Disgusting hypocrisy. Then again when the prime minister tries desperately to help the Russian oligarchs who help fund the tories what do you expect.

“Disgusting hypocrisy”. That it is, mickeyjp…

What has had happened in regards to Chelsea should have had happened in regards to Manchester City back in 2014! ManCity is majority-owned by Sh. Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family. Abu Dhabi forms a part of United Arab Emirates which is a key member of a Saudi-led coalition that’s been bombing and indiscriminately killing civilians since 2014. More recently, the same principal should also apply to the Saudis (i.e. Saudi Public Investment Fund), the owners of Newcastle United. But, instead of sanctions against the owners there were scenes of jubilation at St. James’ Park…

I found it utterly distasteful the whole Newcastle thing has been. Seeing Alan shearer celebrating and ignoring their horrendous human rights record sums up how corrupted the Premier league is. Staveley saying the sanctions on Chelsea are unfair leaves me speechless. The fact man City and Newcastle are getting a free ride shows how morally bankrupt the UK has become.
