On the whole C4 racing has improved, but agree the post-race 2000 Guineas coverage was poor. It seemed Clare Balding was looking to embarras Sheikh Mo all day, fair enough, but not today.
Did I miss the replay? Usually we see a full review and talk about the placed horses. Almost as if they did not want to mention the second and third in case it took something away from the form.
Value Is EverythingMay 4, 2013 at 17:32 #438570If Clare Balding had £1m on her I bet she’d have given it not to have had to ask Sheikh Mohammed THAT question…
May 4, 2013 at 20:04 #438596I thought there coverage was poor today. First classic of the season & I think we saw five/six of runners beforehand? Ok it was raining, but it was the 2000 Guineas. Lots of views of the pundits in their glass box though.
May 4, 2013 at 21:14 #438621Yes, today was the worst C4 Racing shows I have watched so far. I have been one of the few defenders of the new team, but this was a clumsy step backwards.
My finger is quivering over the RUK subscribe button now…
May 4, 2013 at 21:39 #438623Is it me or is Nick Luck in danger of doing an Andy Gray with all these "silly little machines"? (*Big Ron)
May 5, 2013 at 04:18 #438667Claire Balding let herself down badly with her rude and crass interview with Sheik Mohammed………I think she just got carried away in the moment but to imply that he has done anything that would make him stay away from watching one of the sports most important days was very ill judged……..and she ultimately got the response she deserved when he cut the interview short and walked away………uncomfortable viewing on many levels and a Fergie style boycott of being interviewed on C4 racing seems likely.
May 5, 2013 at 05:23 #438669Didn’t see the whole program but not giving out the full SPs (not even on screen while Kevin Manning was interviewed) was sloppy.
While I think Clare Balding was correct in mentioning the Doping affair in her interview with Sheikh Mo, it would have been nice to have some more questions about Dawn Approach first. (Soften them up before going for the jugular rather then Bull in a China Shop so to speak).
Others have said before – less of those "look at our fancy new studio" of Luck, Cunningham etc (it’s a bl00dy trailer for crissake!) and more of the horses in the paddock and going down.
One further minor gripe – why in some of these big Group one races does Simon Holt stop after the first three or four to start eulogising about the big race winners? I know this divides opinion but I like to hear the full finishing order where possible (appreciate this is impossible in races like the Stewards Cup etc) – alternatively re-employ the "creep" super slo-mo finishing line camera that the Beeb used to use.
May 5, 2013 at 07:25 #438677Thought Claire Balding’s face was a picture when the Sheikh cut the interview short. Not sure it was like a new naughty school girl look after been told off or a glance into the camera to tell her bosses "I knew that would happen but you wanted me to go through with it"

Subscribe, its far superior in my opinion
May 5, 2013 at 11:55 #438721I don’t think anyone should be looking at excuses for Balding.
It was another blunder from someone who is really out of their depth.
May 5, 2013 at 12:29 #438730I thought her question was brave. She has had good access in the past to Sheikh Mohammed and to Darley/Goldolphin, and she knows that he is not someone who welcomes awkward questions.
I agree with the posts about the premature hyping of Dawn Approach, and the poor post-race analysis. I thought that Richard Hannon Jr was generous in defeat.
May 5, 2013 at 13:20 #438734I remember years ago when John Tyrrel used to read out the racing results on Channel 4 Racing, they actually went out of their way one bank holiday Monday (remember when we used to have racing on terrestrial TV on bank holidays? ) for Tyrrel to break some sort of record for the most results to be read out on one programme. Would never happen now. Nowadays they go out of their way NOT to give us racing results.
May 5, 2013 at 14:22 #438738John Tyrrel will be turning in his grave. Although I suspect he has turned several revolutions already.
C4 have been on the downgrade for several years. Full screen SP graphics with tote returns disappeared many years ago. While I don’t see the need to reel out the results from other meetings that are now covered on other channels, a full screen sp graphic shown for ten seconds would be much easier to see as not all of us have a 50" widescreen plasma TV.
Before the Internet revolution, the results round-up was essential viewing to keep up to date with the day’s racing. The BBC also had a similar results update with the two way scrolling results graphic.
C4 and ATR seem more and more like car salesmen. They pump you full of what’s coming up and betting shows, but once the race has finished there’s little "after sales" service. Sp’s are only squeezed in with a tiny graphic, if they have time and sometimes with no voice-over so easily missed if your attention has wavered from the screen.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
May 5, 2013 at 14:28 #438740A day late, but at least Cunningham and McGrath made a good job reviewing the 2000.
Value Is EverythingMay 5, 2013 at 14:32 #438741I can not criticise C4 for not reading out results. Can get them from other sourses and there are other things to concentrate on. Review yes, results no.
Value Is EverythingMay 5, 2013 at 15:30 #438748While I don’t necessarily want to see results from other meetings, I don’t think it would hurt to have a full screen SP graphic (with a quick voice-over) of the televised race which has just taken place, as Espmadrid said. It wouldn’t take very long and it would be helpful for those of us who don’t have a TV the size of a cinema screen.
May 5, 2013 at 15:37 #438750On the subject of voice-overs,, why can’t we have the analysis of the runners as a voice over while they parade in the paddock? I am sick of seeing the inside of the booth instead of horses. When I go to the races I don’t go looking for presenters in a booth, I want to see how the horses look & it’s the same when I watch a televised race. This keeps getting posted, don’t they read any of our posts? I’ve also emailed them. Once more we saw very few of the runners for the 1000 guineas. The Grand National was appalling for this, think they only showed around six of the forty runners.
