At least you get full screen on C4.

Had ATR on at the start of the Midlands National and the next thing we have split screen to show the Gowran Park race.

Would be nice if ATR could just concentrate on one race at a time.

Personally I put ATR,RUK and CH4 on mute until the race starts and once its over back on mute again.

I dont think anything the presenters, panelists, jockeys, trainers have to say are of benefit to punters. I am not being rude to them, just feel a lot of what they say will mislead you.

I.E Ruby Walsh saying prior to the Champion Chase "The only way he can get beat is if I fall off" Then After the race he says "He just never went on the ground"

Ruby Walsh is an outstanding jockey , I simply feel their opinions along with presenters, panelists will often mislead you and make you question your selections….

Mute all the way for me, all I want is race pictures and nothing else..

Simply do what they do on ATR after Midnight.

Pre race pictures i.e saddling, parade ring, and then the race itself.

No presenting, Just pre race pictures, betting shows and then the race itself…

    Thats all we need

Yep show the big one and put the other one behind the red button. Not exactly rocket science is it? Drives me mad also!

I have to be honest and say i try never to listen to presenters etc but would like to see more of the horses in the pre parade ring and parade ring but since not renewing ruk subscription i am glad to see any racing.

Just checked, the list should read

    1. Arkle
    2. Kauto Star
    3. Golden Miller
    4. Flyingbolt
    5. Easter Hero

    Thanks for the list :D

I respect McGrath’s assessments, though I am suprised he placed Kauto Star ahead of Golden Miller. Flying Bolt I know little about, a shame about his injuries he could have gone on to great things.

I’m on here several times stating I don’t like Jim McGrath but he does do those sorts of features very well. If Channel 4 were to make a documentary on racing, I’d be happy for him to do the narration.

I also enjoyed Simon Holt’s ‘Unsung Heroes’ pieces, along with the contributions from Ted Walsh (which with Katie & Ruby doing so well, add a nice human aspect to it) & I couldn’t help but chuckle everytime anyone described Ted Walsh as ‘Father Ted’.

I wonder if the reason C4 don’t show as much from the paddock/parade ring is because they assume most punters bet anti-post?

Well I’ll provide the dissenting voice then. I agree about the McGrath pieces they were a welcome change form the dross which C4 serves up. They treat those who watch the show with the lowest common denominator treatment. They seem to feel that they are ever seeking to attract new viewers rather than providing intelligent coverage for those who do. Too many presenters who would never be good enough in any other sport, Lesley Graham, Alice Plunkett et al. They have some good people in Tanya Stevenson, Nick Luck and McGrath but don’t allow them the chance to provide intelligent pieces often enough.
I’d rather watch the RUK or ATR coverage any day depsite their rather obvious failings too.

C4 – They should show more of the paddock.

Listen … (as Aidan O’Brien might say) … I was turning over from RUK to Channel 4 to see

    anything

of the horses in the paddock

    at all

, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. Things improved a little later in the week, when the broadcast director decided to get Stuart Machin to stand outside it to give us a stream of consciousness on the horses

    coming out

    of the paddock.

I find RUK’s priorities increasingly bizarre.

All in all I`m very pleased to have had the Channel 4 coverage. There are a lot of irritations but for a mainstream broadcaster it has served us very well. Anyone who watches the BBC coverage of Royal Ascot will come to appreciate just how well.

The Festival Top 20, and particularly the Unsung Heroes section were also of great interest.

There were downsides though. As per Gingertipsters post, some of the camera angles were poor, far too many close ups, just give us the best view of the field. Simple, traditional camera angles please, don’t ever recall anyone complaining about them.

The biggest disappointment though, was "Festival Al a Carte". A very, very boring segment, what were they thinking?

I agree with most on here. Overall it was very good, and the pieces they’d organised to fill in the gaps between races were on the whole very entertaining and added a lot to my enjoyment and knowledge. It was good to hear some of the background stories to the horses and stables. The presenters were all obviously as excited about the whole thing as I was, which was great, and Ted Walsh brought a lot of down to earth sanity to proceedings.
I enjoyed every minute, Morning Line included. Roll on next year :-)

I always listen to the presenters. why not? Its just another opinion and im not going to be so arrogant to assume i know more about form and individual horses than Neesom or mellish for instance. Rarely changes my bets as it happens but very useful for future pointers, espcially mellish’s excellent post race analysis

OK Katy Walsh did a double, but why have daddy and the team acting as unpaid agents?

It depends who it is, there’s nothing at all arrogant assuming you know more about form and individual horses than Harvey, Weaver, Fitzgerald, Cooper, Enzo, Zoe, Francome, Down, Plunkett, Graham etc. etc.
