Any chance the handicapper has taken a bit of a chance on this one? Currently rated 86 on the Flat by the BHA, after 3 hurdle runs where he had been beaten at total of 223 lengths the handicapper opted not to give him a mark, after one more run where he was pulled up when a 40’s chance and ridden in much the same fashion as before (dropped out), it was decided there was enough evidence to suggest the horse has deteriorated so much he should only get a mark of 62 over jumps.
March 31, 2010 at 09:22 #286664No, David, I don’t think the Handicapper has taken a chance, if previous runs are to be believed. Therein lies the conundrum. How, after such dismal performances, is it now deemed worthy of being favourite. If it wins there needs to be some sort of investigation though I imagine the re-application of blinkers will be proffered as the explanation for a marked improvement in form. It’s scenarios like this that lead one to despair. Certain yards should have an extra stone allotted to their ‘first-handicap’ runners.
On the other hand, had it been priced up at 20’s I might have had a little dabble and thought I’d got a bit of value, believing that its past form was genuine, just needing time to be seen at its best. As the late, great Bill Shankly once said, "You can take a horse to water, but it can’t play football." Well, I think he did anyway.
KMarch 31, 2010 at 09:48 #286667Ken, if this wins it will certainly be time to ask the handicapper what he’s play-ing at

If so, there have been plenty of occasions in he past when horses he’s connected with have been gambled and flopped.
Kings Head was a similarly highly rated flat horse that suffered plenty of disappointments for the same connections.
Having said that I’m glad Tifernati is in the 2:10 and not the 3:10, which I’m just off to watch …..

a recurring dream of mine…having a copy of tomorrow’s newspaper today and doing hundreds of combination bets with every bookmaker on the planet.
Have any fraudsters ever tried to intercept the satellite/computer communications to betting shops or is that just not feasible?March 31, 2010 at 10:15 #286674Having said that I’m glad Tifernati is in the 2:10 and not the 3:10, which I’m just off to watch …..

I see that your trainer Pat Murphy has the favourite in the race, not that I would tell anybody

Comments on today’s prospects are somewhat academic now, but it also includes an encouraging update on Morana.
That said, regular readers of his blog will know that Bert can give even the greatest of eternal optimists a run for their money.
