April 4, 2007 at 05:23 #47704hehe, had the Column millions on did you? ;)
April 4, 2007 at 12:03 #47705Something like that, Gilly, yes! He was one of my Sportsman 10 to Follow back in October as well, specifically with winning a novice hurdle or two and then the National in mind. The first part he nearly managed last week, the latter he won’t get chance now.
Ah well, get well soon Oss, and huge commiserations to Don Forster and all connected – it’s not like this is a stable with dozens of readymade substitutes waiting in the wings.

April 4, 2007 at 12:51 #47706One race (and a very good one for me…) where i leave any decision making to late on
Reason?
the ground is such a major factor. We so often get real extremes at aintree (more so than cheltenham i feel) and simply put, over this distance it is a huge factor..
April 4, 2007 at 14:52 #47707I can’t believe people are putting up Joes Edge as contender for the race, stats are saying "No Joe"
April 4, 2007 at 17:46 #47708Yes. It’s pronounced "You’re Some Man". And it’s not good enough.
April 4, 2007 at 19:14 #47709I’m a bit gutted Ossmoses is out; there goes another that I would have swiftly crossed off my list! He just did not have the class IMO.
I remember watching him a couple of years ago when he was second to Heidi in a handicap chase at Wetherby whilst rated 107. He did not look anything out of the ordinary, and was indeed outpaced by the rag of that race (which never won again after that I might add). I know horses improve, and he most definitely has, but if that self same animal were ever to win a Grand National I would be astounded.
April 4, 2007 at 23:34 #477103 for the race for me, and all with doubts over them tbh.
Monkerhostin
Does he stay? Has he just been staying on past knackered rivals? Will he get round?
All fair questions, but a mark of 152 for a horse beaten 10L in this years Gold Cup and not far off beating Kicking King (admittedly after a bad mistake at the last) in the King George when staying on well at the end of each race is interesting to me. Quite likely to jump halfway up the first though….
Liberthine
Successfully impregnated this year. May not stay. But these ‘stories’ do well at Aintree and if I’m going to go with a trend it might as well be as remote as that one!
Billyvoddan
Seemed to show his win 2 runs ago wasn’t a fluke when running well in the Ryanair. The literal form is questionable given Monets Garden ran below par but finished 4th, Racing Demon wants to go RH and I’m not sure quite what Our Vic is capable of. But now Billy’s been confirmed for the race he’s one I want to keep on the right side of.
Good luck all.
April 4, 2007 at 23:59 #47711Ursumman was taken out of the National at the latest forfeit stage.
April 6, 2007 at 21:41 #47712There are white goods in my kitchen that jump steeplechase fences better than Bothar Na on all evidence to date.
However, he jumped round – after a fashion – in the Foxhunters there last year so he’s no stranger to the place; and if whatever schooling he has undergone since his last racecourse appearance before Christmas has had the desired effect, I’d be pretty sweet on his chances.
Increasingly, though, this is a renewal of the National where finding something with a wholly convincing profile is proving tricky, and I expect an even more divided pinning of allegiances in the trade and national papers this time around than is usually the case.

April 10, 2007 at 17:26 #47713Officials at Aintree are now saying they’ll try their utmost to keep any tinge of ‘firm’ from the going. Tony Martin chose today to come out and say that Dun Doire won’t like fast ground. Weather forecasts are showing big balls of sunshine on Merseyside.
What I’m getting at here is; it’s looking like we could have a GF Grand National this year. If it was to be the case, would you change your selection(s), and if so, to what?
Personally, I’d still be quite happy with my Point Barrow, but I’d rip up my e/w bet on Numbersixvalverde. And interestingly, the two horses to show the best credentials on fast ground (GF) are McKelvey and Puntal, with Monkerhostin best of the rest. I’d probably end up sticking some place money on one of them.
You’re having a laugh, surely? :o
April 10, 2007 at 21:19 #47715I’m not saying they’re going to win anything (esp. Puntal, who’s looked decidedly uninterested recently), but those are the horses with proven, on-paper track records on good to firm; the two formers having won a Summer National and a Whitbread respectively.
April 10, 2007 at 22:47 #47716Slim Pickings has interested me since the weights were released and he travelled like the winner in the Racing Post plate until faltering a little at the business end. Tom Taffe has only aquired him from Robert Tyner so he is still learning about the horse and will have him spot on for Saturday. Simon’s performance is also hard to ignore last day and i make him about 8lb well in

April 11, 2007 at 07:38 #47717Looking for a good run for my money, so the 2 I will stick with are Idle Talk and Kelami.
Good luck to all.
