The Mullins horse I quite like is
UN DE SCEAUX
. He was very keen on both his starts but blew me away when he slammed
Moscow Mannon
at Punchestown. That was one hell of a performance. He’s not quoted for the Arkle and it remains to be seen whether he tackles fences or stays hurdling for another season but whatever he does he’s one to watch.
I wrote this way back on the 10th of July, 2013. It has taken until this weekend to see Un De Sceaux run in a Grade 1 race. I have not backed him for the Arkle (although I have him in a double with Vautour for the JLT), but I hope we’ll see a performance tomorrow that will cement him as firm favourite for Cheltenham.

It will be interesting to see how Gilgamboa gets on with AP. Everyone will no doubt remember how they combined to make that shocking mistake in the Supreme. AP managed a couple of winners at Doncaster today despite a catalogue of errors but I doubt he will be so lucky tomorrow.
Fiscal Focus adds a bit of interest to the main race. Pity they didn’t try and book a top jockey to aid his chances.
January 24, 2015 at 23:32 #502815Wouldn’t worry about the jockey Stilvi, Fogarty is a very good jockey and makes few mistakes. Timeform said in an article last season that he’s in the top dozen riders in Britain and Ireland.
January 25, 2015 at 20:28 #502964I backed him today but looking ahead although the trip shouldn’t be an issue I would be concerned about his jumping on a quicker surface.
(No More Heroes) Looked exposed for the reasons above and unless the ground was testing I wouldn’t be surprised to see him swerve the Festival.
I put in a mention for Outlander earlier in this thread and wasn’t too surprised at his win but he didn’t look entirely straightforward at the finish and aside from the obvious (and I will let him win at the price) if there was another potential Cheltenham winner on view then it might well have been Martello Tower. Doesn’t jump off the page but he has plenty of pluses back up in trip.
Bit puzzled by Fiscal Focus. If you stopped the race he was looking strong candidate for first two but he stopped much too quickly to have been purely outclassed. Something physical I would have thought.
January 25, 2015 at 20:49 #502971No More Heroes was never really travelling or jumping today, could have been the ground but not sure myself. Was a shadow of the horse who beat Shaneshill in Navan.
I thought Fiscal Focus ran well for a long way and probably paid for being quite keen early. Not sure he’s the type to train on and will be interesting to see where they go from here.
January 31, 2015 at 20:15 #503624Do you know of any negative news about Carrigmoorna Rock since her last race? I did think she was cut a little too much after her last win but she has since eased and an Irish bookmaker is now offering the standout.
According to today’s Racing Post trainer reported her in ‘good order’. Despite this positive she produced a performance about as abysmal as you are likely to see. Strange thing for me was the negative ride with the jock almost accepting that she wasn’t going to produce anything from a very early stage.

February 2, 2015 at 13:21 #503864With Cheltenham in mind any thoughts on Noble Emperor and Smashing?
Noble Emperor was the potential novice chaser I was most looking forward to from last season. Unfortunately, I haven’t been at all convinced since the hood went on and I am not even sure he would have won last time. Grade 1 entries might suggest they still rate him but it could easily be another JP smokescreen.
Although he might have place prospects it seems unlikely Smashing will be taking on Un De Sceaux in the Arkle. Given his exuberant style the extra distance of the JLT might be stretching him a little so personally I would like to see him having a crack at the Grand Annual but impossible to get involved unless you are privy to some inside information. Handicap entries will obviously give a clue.
February 2, 2015 at 17:57 #503891Hi Stilvi,
Smashing is a horse I really like and he’s probably unlucky to be novice chasing in such a strong year. I see they’ve mentioned the JLT where he’d have place claims but would be hard to see him winning. Before he won at Gowran I had the novices handicap chase in mind for him but he’ll probably be rated too high for that now. The Grand Annual is not a bad option but chances are there’ll be better handicapped horses. Hard to say really before we see what mark he’s given. Soft ground isn’t a necessity for him but he handles it so well that if it were up to me I’d consider bypassing Cheltenham for a crack at the Powers Gold Cup. Chance of softer going at Fairyhouse and it’s not always the strongest race given its position in the calendar.
Hard to know what to make of Noble Emperor. I don’t think he needs a trip and would be happy to keep him at 2.5 miles or less for the time being given he’s a free enough sort. Be interesting to see if he’s still in the Moriarty entries in the morning.

Apologies Wolf, missed this earlier. Good to see you pop in, I hope it won’t be as long before your next visit
Any Cheltenham fancies?February 5, 2015 at 15:48 #504195I don’t really have any fancies. Everything i like has been re-routed or what have you. I was going to say i like Valseur Lido, then i read that Alvisio Ville may be neptune bound. I had to use the money i had set aside for Lido , to make some emergency combo bets. It’s all going t*ts up. I thought Vatour looked an Arkle horse, but he goes jlt. All my money is down, and after Sunday i’ll switch off and tune back in around March. The joys of ante posts.

You are not alone. Vautour was backed for the Arkle, Valseur Lido
for the Sun Alliance and Alvisio Ville for the Supreme. If the current markets are to be believed all three are now looking like they are heading elsewhere. No surprise that yet again the common denominator is Willie Mullins who rarely seems to nominate a Cheltenham target and then stick with it. Yes, he has to juggle a top class team but it is as if he almost enjoys the confusion he creates. The most annoying aspect with these three is that with the exception of Vautour’s blip none of them have actually done anything on the racecourse to suggest that seemingly the original target was incorrect.February 10, 2015 at 10:44 #504921Tommy what you think of VALSEUR LIDO i still think he turn form around at festival.1ST race for a bit and while he was fit nothing better race fitness a stronger pace and Cheltenham a different course no doubt he can still win JLT.
Any bumper horses you like UP FOR REVIEW is my bet for it
And which irish horses can you see doing well in handicaps at festival.

I’ve said for a while now I prefer Apache Stronghold to Valseur Lido and after the weekend’s events I’m not changing my mind

Up For Review a nice type alright, fine big sort who will be a three miler in time I imagine. I like Stone Hard of the Mullins horses, been very impressive to date, but the bumper horse who has really caught my eye is General Principle. Looked a beast on debut.
I’ve a list of Irish handicappers Darren but want to see what they’re entered for before I disclose my fancies

We just have to get on with it mate, spilled milk and all. You know the game, and you’ll be alright.

The gloves are off on the handicaps now Darren and I’ve backed four Irish horses in them so far: Roi Des Francs (Martin Pipe, 12/1 nrnb), Lite Duties (Pertemps, 14/1 nrnb), Hostile Fire (Fred Winter, 12/1) and Ned Buntline (Grand Annual, 10/1 nrnb).
Any you like yourself?
March 1, 2015 at 23:44 #779239Nice winner yesterday Tommy, well done.
I like Ned Buntline, and Hostile Fire, those both make my “nb” list at the moment.
