June 1, 2007 at 15:23 #63090Seems to be a season where Flat racing is showing its romantic rather than po faced side :)
June 1, 2007 at 15:23 #63091About a year or so ago, someone on a racing forum suggested that Cecil should jack it in because he was "just embarrasing his legacy".
Well, whoever it was (and whichever forum it was) …
GET IT UP YE!!!

June 1, 2007 at 15:37 #63092
Echo all the cheers for Henry – and a word for the owners, the Niarchos family, who’ve stuck by the trainer and also earned this reward.

June 1, 2007 at 19:12 #63095Good post by AP.
Henry Cecil is no saint as evidenced by his colourful personal life and the messy drink driving incident.
His appeal is that in a profession full of arrogant patricians and chippy self made men with hang ups over their lack of formal education and social skills, Henry exudes an easy charm and common touch. He is approachable to the ordinary racegoer and gallop watcher.
Certainly he found it tough up against Ballydoyle and Godolphin in recent years, having lost long standing owners like Jim Joel and Lord Howard de Walden. However owners like Abdulla and the Niarchos family have kept the faith and been rewarded this season.
Cecil has forgotten more about training classic winners than most of his peers will ever learn. Form is temporary but class permanent.
I note that those who dismissed him on this forum as "gone at the game" last season have yet to post their congratulations. Doubtless they are still feasting on large helpings of humble pie!
June 1, 2007 at 19:30 #63096Forgive my ignorance but what is the history behind Henry Cecil.
Good for Henry, for Peter Chapple-Hyam, for Frankie.
They are all good stories that deserve telling; heart-warming and fine illustrations of true champions.
In this little village of horse-racing, where the rest of the world mostly passes us by, have I detected an air of ‘Big Brother’, with Davina stand-in’s Clare and Lydia as our hosts.
Like proud gardeners on ‘Best In Bloom’ Day it seems our presenters have become obsessed with showing the racing village off as something special, something that can appeal to everyone. A gushing desire to have us cross-over into the mainstream; just for a day – please !
All the excitement will be over in an hour, and the village will return to normal. A quiet backwater with it’s beautiful tracts of land, gentleman trainers and, of course, all that political in-fighting.
If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a dozen times in the last couple of days – it’s been emotional.

A brilliant weekend for 3 of racing’s finest ambassadors!
What better way to sell racing than to have 3 of the most courteous and informative people in racing making the headlines.
When was the last time racing made the front pages for anything so positive, and what possible harm can there be in milking it for all it’s worth?
