There is of course room for emotion in racing. Persian Punch and Best Mate were grand horses who added a great deal to the racing scene in their day. Dettori is perhaps more of an acquired taste but clearly he commands a following as well. But I couldn’t possibly disagree with what you say about H R A Cecil. Good luck, Henry.
June 1, 2007 at 09:40 #63067Good luck to him.
He’s had his problems and it would be great to see him getting another big winner.

June 1, 2007 at 09:42 #63068Totally agree
Not just his brilliance as a trainer (best in my limited time IMO) but the fact that he treated the public with real respect and was a breath of fresh air compared with the stuffy and somehwat condecending old brigade at that time
oh sod ..i just love the bloke anyway
refused to bet today because i only want to see one thing happen :)
June 1, 2007 at 10:02 #63069It is said that betting with your heart instead of your head is the quickest way to the poor-house. But I don’t care — I’m backing Henry and P.O.T.
I echo all the sentiments above ……… I love the man for his generosity, open-ness and dignified stance in the face of all the adversity that he has experienced.

Not a betting race for me, fwiw I think PoT may struggle to stay, but I would dearly love for the gp1 flag to be flying at Warren Place tonight.
June 1, 2007 at 10:58 #63071Could be an emotional couple of days. Our ‘enry winning the Oaks followed by the foremost jockey of our age finally getting to sit on a horse with a decent shot at the Derby.
I’ll see your Come on Henry and raise you a Come on Richard
June 1, 2007 at 11:04 #63072Glenn,
I thought Richard Hills was on Aqaleem?
June 1, 2007 at 11:19 #63073Good luck Henry. Wish the horses had been running a bit better this week though.
June 1, 2007 at 11:43 #63074I agree … cmoan ‘enry !!
June 1, 2007 at 12:23 #63075
I wouldn’t argue with any of the sentiments offered on behalf of Henry (is it a sign of approval that he can be identified by just his first name?), but it’s interesting to look back and wonder how he came to be so revered.
Given his background, he could very easily have acquired a different reputation – playboy, silver spoon, inherited the stable, married the trainers daughter, endless supply of top class horses, affairs, divorce, drink etc etc. Plenty of material for a tabloid hatchet job.
But an unassuming manner, aspot of self deprecation and a clever technique for TV and we have ourselves a hero.
When did he become just ‘Henry’, can anyone remember? I mean there’s no prospect of anyone called Mr Stoute ‘Mikey’ is there? Yet he’s had the same level of success as a trainer, so is the difference solely down to how each of them handled the media?

June 1, 2007 at 12:59 #63076Wasnt Major Hern always refered to as Dicky? :o
June 1, 2007 at 13:31 #63077Nice post AP.
Given the British love of the underdog I suspect he became just Henry when his fortunes – both personal and professional – started to go belly up.
Like so many here, I’ve got sweet memories of the fella in his pomp but far sweeter ones of his charges: I just have to whisper the name ‘Ardross’ and the eyes mist over.
Yep COME ON HENRY!
June 1, 2007 at 14:14 #63079Agreed. I’m not having a bet and will be cheering on HRA Cecil.
Clive, I’m not sure anyone ever called Major Hern, "Dicky".  Not to his face anyway.
June 1, 2007 at 14:50 #63081Not betting, like the look of Light Shift, but whatever wins i hope it’s a Henry trained hoss
