I remember a wonderful old horse, Eastern Destiny (?) who won his last race at the age of 17 and died of a heart attack shortly after passing the winning post. I thought that it was a great ending for a racehorse. But, hooray, The Tatling should be around for a good few years yet.
June 8, 2011 at 16:01 #359595Ahhhh, how wonderful an old boy was Eastern Destiny.
The race you refer to was a hunter chase at Nottingham in February 1995. He’d already won 11 out of 21 hunters up to that point, including on his seasonal bow every year from 1989 to 1994 (barring 1993, when he didn’t run under Rules), and had therefore just pulled off the feat for the sixth season in seven when dropping to the ground.
The copybook definition of meeting an honourable end, and the horse of a lifetime for the Griffith family. Warwick hunter chases alone provided six of his victories, and I’d love there to be such a race named permanently after him there (in addition to, rather than instead of, Air Wedding).

June 8, 2011 at 22:19 #359659I was there that day & saw it happen, it was very quick. A wonderful servant & very Desert Orchidish to look at.
Neither he nor his partner have been forgotten at Bangor:
The James Griffith Memorial Hunters’ Steeple Chase provides the amateur rider a chance to enjoy a ride around a licensed track. The Griffith Family kindly continue to sponsor this competitive race in memory of James who rode at Bangor on Dee many times on his well known successful horse Eastern Destiny.
June 14, 2011 at 21:25 #360797Ran tonight @ Brighton and finishing an agonising 2nd!! he ran on coming down the hill and i was shouting at the tv for him to get his nose in front. I really admire this horse, still wants to knuckle down and give his all. Hope he gets the win soon though!!!
Does anybody know of the oldest runner to have raced? does the tatling come close?
June 14, 2011 at 21:33 #360799He’s a cracking old horse, but some way to go before he matches Creggmore Boy’s last race at the age of 21 (around 1960, I think).
June 14, 2011 at 21:34 #360800Also noticed he’s under new ownership. Any idea why he was sold?
June 14, 2011 at 21:48 #360802Sold!!! Never, he’s been leased for three months, info on his fan club page on FB.
June 14, 2011 at 22:35 #360814Also a small write up on him on page 8 of the racing post today.
Ran a superb race this evening!

He’s got a Facebook fan page? Excellent.
I haven’t seen the run yet. Fingers crossed he gets his win soon.

The old boy wins for the first time in 2 years!
What a fine ride by Hayley Turner and look at the Yarmouth crowd giving him his applause, 3 or 4 deep aswell! that’s a fantastic sight.
WOW! Frankel didn’t even get that at Ascot.
June 30, 2011 at 15:23 #362979Lovely, to see the horse win again.
Hayley Turner certainly did give him a fine ride.
Regards
June 30, 2011 at 16:31 #362985Yeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh!
Hayley Turner, you are my new favourite jockey.
I wonder if they’ll follow through with saying ‘one more win then retirement’ or whether they’ll keep him going.
June 30, 2011 at 18:35 #363012Excellent news, well done The Tatling and Hayley Turner.
June 30, 2011 at 19:33 #363020I am not normally one of Ms. Turners greatest fans, and have been particularly critical about her riding of Margot Did. However that was a cracking ride today, and it was absolutely brilliant to see the old boy victorious.
I half expected them to retire him upon a victory, but apparently they have tried that previously and he doesn’t want to give up, so he continues racing. Bless him .June 30, 2011 at 20:09 #363027I am not normally one of Ms. Turners greatest fans, and have been particularly critical about her riding of Margot Did. Bless him .I’m pretty sure I saw a quote (I don’t remember where) when the trainer said last time they tried to retire him he ended up kicking lumps out of the stable.
Only he used less polite language.
June 30, 2011 at 20:20 #363028That was great, he’s a fantastic horse. Don’t we wish we all had one like The Tatling!
June 30, 2011 at 22:20 #363033were going to keep him going!
